Chapter 2: Miracles
After eating dinner and helping Mildred wash the dished and clean up Kurt decided for a calm evening. His aunt took a book and he took his laptop he had taken from home and hey both sat on the couch to enjoy each other's company in peace.
Kurt had to admit that today was even more confusing than the first full day he had in Miami. And that said a lot. Being in a new city for the first time isn't easy but what he experienced today beats it. It seemed like there was a lot less drama than back in Ohio but then again he didn't know what it was like in school here. Not like he would know but at least he would spend his summer in great company.
Kurt pressed the call button on his Skype and patiently waited for the loving face he missed so much to pop up.
‘'Hey, kiddo!'' But exclaimed with a big smile.
Mildred smiled too where she sat next to Kurt at her brother's voice. Kurt's heart leaped in his chest. He hadn't spoken to his dad the day before because of his schedule at his shop and Kurt laughed a little to himself at how much he missed his father after just one day. ‘'Hi, dad! How are you doing?''
‘'Nothing special to be honest with you. Just the same old,'' he scratched the back of his neck. ‘'Though I have to admit that it's weird not seeing you here when I come home.''
Kurt smiled sadly at that.
Burt actually had been working a lot more during the last few days. Not seeing his boy was harder that he'd imagined but he knew he had to get used to this. He knew Kurt would achieve great things in life and would be in New York this time next year.
.....
Blaine said goodbye to his friends and sighed as he went back in. After Kurt left Sam could tell Blaine wasn't in his element so he somehow managed to get them all in the pool and just mess around. After being in the water so long their hands were wrinkly, they settled for a movie. It was safer that way anyway ‘cause Blaine's parents needed to be home soon and Ricardio didn't like ‘nutheads' that were Blaine's friends. No one really liked Pam's husband but they never admitted it or showed it.
Blaine fell on the couch and looked back just when his step-father stepped into the home though his mother wasn't with him.
‘'Blaine!'' He yelled and stumbled around the living room. Blaine rolled his eyes. He was right there but the asshole didn't notice him. He was obviously drunk. Honestly, he didn't feel like talking to Ricardio right now. Everything he had to say was just things that should make him feel bad. At first it did but now he just lets it pass his ears.
‘'Blaine!'' The mad yelled again.
‘'What ?'' Blaine said back calmly and stood up, not wanting to make the drunk angry any more than he already was for some reason.
It took a second for Ricardio's eyes to actually find Blaine and he stumbled a little forward, pointing a little at his step-son. ‘'N-Nathaniel told me you're not doing a good job, son.''
Blaine furrwed his eyebrows at the man when he got closer. He hated the reek of alcohol that was now more common than he'd like. ‘'What did he tell you?''
‘'He says that you have been avoiding Vanessa for a while,'' the man stumbled again and it was Blaine's natural instinct to catch him before he fell. He took him by his shoulders and lightly pushed him so he could sit on the couch. That's probably where he would fall asleep after his ridiculous lectures.
‘'What did he tell you?'' Blaine still tried not to sound irritated, though he was. He just hoped it didn't show. The previous time the man had tried to take a swing at him. He never told his mother that.
‘'She's been trying to get to you. People will get suspicious if you do that, son,'' Blaine almost growled. He hated when the man called him that. ‘'Tomorrow you need to go out with her. Or else Nathaniel will kick your unresponsible ass.''
How horrible. Blaine just crossed his arms over his chest. ‘'Anything else?''
‘'I hope you've been ignoring her for a reason,'' Ricardio said, slowly drifting off and falling to his side. ‘'Her birthday is the day after tomorrow...Hope you're planing a surprise or something.''
Blaine groaned quietly after the man closed his eyes. He wasn't looking forward to Vanessa's party. His mom had got her a gift a while ago ‘cause he didn't care enough to do that himself. The whole situation just sucked.
.....
‘'Rachel has been as enthusiastic as ever,'' Burt told and shared a smile with Kurt. ‘'Performing at the mall and stuff. Your boys just doin' boy things. Football, video games. Seems like everything is the same, kid.''
Kurt smiled. It was good knowing everyone was enjoying their summer back in Lima. He had received some messages from Mercedes and Rachel, it was nice knowing his friends missed him.
‘'Enough about me,'' Burt clapped his hands in excitement, wanting to know how his son was doing. ‘'Tell me, how are things going with you?''
‘'He has friends already,'' Mildred said loudly from her side of the couch. ‘'And there's a boy-‘'
‘'There's no boy!'' Kurt blushed and sent his aunt a pointed glare. Burt was grinning and had raised his eyebrows.
‘'Kiddo...''
‘'No, dad. She's lying!'' Kurt covered his face with his hands but had a smile from ear to ear, making Meldrid laugh.
‘'No, no, you can tell me everything!'' Burt said clearly and then looked somewhere away from the webcam, mumbling, ‘'Now where's my shot gun...''
‘'DAD!''
x-x-x-x-x
Kurt's morning at the shop went by like a flash. It was a quite busy day and it seemed like all the bottles of water, energy drinks and granola bars just disappeared. Days when people had their tennis practices and golf games were crazy. In the little spare time he did have he mostly talked to Ivy. She was a great girl and he was glad to be working with her.
It was almost the end of his working time and he happily served a customer, smiling politely at the thank you. The next person in the line surprised him though.
‘'Hey, handsome,'' Blaine placed a hand on the counter and leaned on it, ducking his head a bit and then looking at Kurt with a smile.
Kurt's eyebrows rose and he answered only after a few confusing seconds. ‘'Hi!'' He observed his outfit and bit the inside of his cheek. Blaine was sweating all over, his tan skin glowing, and he was wearing what it seemed like an outfit you would wear to practice.
‘'Wait a second...'' Kurt's eyes narrowed. ‘'You...You play tennis, don't you?!''
‘'Ding ding ding!'' Blaine lifted his hands and exclaimed. ‘'Guess the cat's out of the bag.''
Kurt laughed and shook his head. ‘'I guess you'll want water.''
The curly haired boy nodded and leaned against the counter again. ‘'And the pink donuts too, please.''
Kurt rolled his eyes and walked over the glass showcase, getting a little paper bag where to put the donuts in. ‘'How many?''
Blaine perked his lips and looked at the ceiling as if thinking hard. He already knew the answer. ‘'Um ...All of them.''
‘'Blaine...there's like seven there,'' Kurt said and chuckled with a raised eyebrow, but it didn't surprise him.
‘'What ?! They're delicious. And nutricious.''
‘'Very.'' Kurt said sarcastically but still took the tongs and started putting the treats in the bag.
‘'I wouldn't mind if you used your fingers,'' Blaine pointed to him. ‘'I trust that you wash your hands regularly.''
Kurt smiled but didn't look up at Blaine. ‘'I'm at my work place. I listen to my boss and I work professionally.''
Blaine grinned. ‘'You're no fun.''
‘'Yeah, me touching your donuts is so fun for you, isn't it?''
Kurt handed the paper bag to the boy who took it and clutched it to his chest, ignoring Kurt's sarcastic comment, then giving precise amount of money for the water and unicorn pink glazed donuts. ‘'Besides, your ‘boss' is your aunt. I think she'd forgive you.''
‘'Hey, gayface!'' Becky pushed Blaine aside and leaned on the counter herself.
‘'Hey Becky!'' Kurt answered calmly.
Blaine raised his eyebrows and stared between the two. He would've thought Kurt would be a little offended at that. ‘'Becky, why-‘'
‘'It's fine Blaine,'' Kurt had a feeling what Blaine was about to say so he just shrugged it off before the two of them would start a fight. Besides, Blaine was afraid of the little though Becky.
‘'Are we going?'' Becky asked her new friend, completely ignoring Blaine behind her.
‘'Yes we are,'' Kurt said excitedly. He removed the little name tag from his shirt and went into the back room to get his things. He came out and gave a half hug to Ivy, saying goodbye.
‘'May I ask where are you going, dear friends?'' Blaine asked, taking a donut out about to bite it.
‘'We're going shopping. We have a party to attend tomorrow,'' Kurt said and went towards the door behind Becky.
Blaine almost choked on his first bite because of two things. First, he forgot about the party completely. It wasn't really his responsibility or anything like that, the gifts for Vanessa his mother usually bought. This was Vanessa's first birthday since they got together but there still were things to get gifts for. Valentine's day, Christmas and so on. All of those bought his mother. She knew what a girl wants best anyway.
Second, his practice was about to end and he had to go get Vanessa and spend some time with his friends. Probably just getting lunch at Papaya's. But he wasn't looking forward to it. Especially is Kurt wouldn't be there.
‘'I'll see you later,'' Kurt waved to Blaine who waved back slowly, still deep in his thoughts and recovering from almost choking.
.....
Shopping turned out better than Kurt expected. Even though he wasn't shopping for himself, he was enjoying every second of his time. Also, Becky turned out to be cool to hang around. Probably because she didn't drop so many insults, no one except for Kurt was there to hear them anyway.
At the moment, he was resting against the wall opposite some changing rooms. Becky's intention to come and go shopping was to buy a dress so they've been in a ‘perfect dress' hunt for a little over an hour. Becky's goal was dress to impress. Impress Jeff of course. Kurt only had rolled his eyes and hadn't said anything. He didn't want to be responsible one of breaking a teenage girl's heart. She would realize her mistake and Kurt would be there for a girl and boy night with sad movies, ugly crying and ice cream Kurt wouldn't touch and just let Becky devour.
This would have to be at least the fifteenth dress the girl was trying on but Kurt was a pretty patient person. Besides, he knew very well how it was to want to find the perfect item to purchase. It wasn't anything new to him.
‘'So, what do you think?'' Becky said as she swung the curtain open, revealing the dress she had on.
Kurt's mouth fell open and he even dropped his bag that contained the gift for Vanessa. The dress was...revealing and absolutely not appropriate for a fifteen year old. The dress looked like a one peace bathing suit with a mini skirt attached. Revealing too much cleavage and barely going over her backside. Just a dreadful dress.
‘'Becky, what are you thinking?'' Kurt silently scolded her, picking up the bag from the ground. ‘'Please, for your own sake put this away and even drop the idea from your head. I'm never going to let you go to this party with a dress like that.''
Becky's face fell and her hands dropped to her sides. ‘'Kurt, I'm exhausted. I want Jeff to like me.''
Kurt sighed. He didn't like to see her sad like that. ‘'Let's do this – you go get out of that horrible piece of fabric I refuse to call a clothing item while I will go get you something nice that will suit you. I promise you'll look stunning.''
The girl seemed to observe the suggestion for a bit but then nodded. She didn't feel like she had any choice. And taking by how Kurt dressed, he understood fashion. A lot better than her. ‘'Fine.''
Kurt squealed from the inside. He isn't really used to looking for girl's clothes but he was excited anyway. He walked through the woman's section swiftly and it turned out it was very easy to navigate there. He browsed through the dress options and one dress just stuck out to him. Just like in the movies. He found the right size and basically skipped to the dressing room from excitement.
And it turned out splendid. The perfect fit, the perfect color, perfectly unrevealing.
The dress was light blue, a little above the knee, covering the shoulders. It had silver colored dots all over it, making the blue stand out more. And the blue made went well together with her hair and especially her eye color.
‘'I love it, Kurt,'' she gushed, a huge smile on her face just like Kurt as he watched the girl spin in the dress happily.
.....
Blaine's whole morning and afternoon went by slower than a snail in a desert. After practice he had showered, eaten another pink glaze donut in the car and went to Vanessa's. He knew what the day would be like and he was glad it would be over soon. As awesome the girl was, he didn't particularly enjoy her company that much. Every time they were together it was the same old story. She would say how little time they spend together and he would just listen and not object like a puppy, she would plan all the dates they could have, the events they could go to but it never really happened. Not that Blaine minded.
If he and the girl would have met under different circumstances, he was sure they could be great friends or even a couple. Right now, all the girl cared for was fame, publicity, social media followers and money. She came from a rich family herself but she kept saying how little cash she gets from her parents. Blaine hated that in people. But other than that, she was nice, pretty and funny, all a boy could want from a girl. Just the situation Blaine had pulled her into had changed her.
As always, before any celebration, Vanessa went shopping. It was something she did even before she had met Blaine. Only now, Blaine was tagging along, being as bored as he could possibly be.
From Nick:
Hey! We'll be at Papaya's in 5. U coming?
Blaine sighed as he read the text. Currently, he was sitting at some make up store's floor, watching his girlfriend and her friends smell different perfumes. He had considered texting Kurt but didn't want to bother him from his shopping with Becky.
To Nick:
Yeah. V won't notice if I left.
He looked up from his phone and indeed, she was paying him no attention. He didn't want any attention but he was so bored he didn't know where to put himself. He was about to go through his photos when another text arrived.
From Nick:
U OK?
Blaine replied with a plain ‘'yeah'' and clicked on Flappy Bird. He had to beat Kurt.
After 20 minutes of still not beating Kurt's score, Blaine decided to give up. It was just impossible, he didn't even recall getting the 67 one. He pocketed the device and slid down the couch. Vanessa was just paying for something she purchased and was coming up to him.
‘'Ready to go?'' she asked, handing Blaine the bad she got from the store. ‘'I saw this one store that had this incredible dress and I saw a matching blazer for you, it would be the perfect combination for both of us to wear to my party tomorrow.''
Blaine groaned and threw back his head. ‘'I don't want to go anywhere else. My ass hurts from sitting this whole time already. And I won't wear a matching outfit. It's ridiculous.''
The girl pouted. ‘'Blaine. Nathaniel told me we should do more couple-y things. And I'm the one trying. You're just not cooperating. Why are you doing this? Is this one of your rebellious moves again against your step-father?''
‘'No, Vanessa, I just don't want to,'' he turned around, facing away from the girl so he wouldn't get so mad. He didn't know what was up with him today. He didn't have the mood today for anything.
‘'Fine,'' she said silently and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. ‘'I didn't mean to embitter you. I care about you and he told me to step up our game.''
Blaine turned around again, seeing her friends approach. ‘'I'm sorry, I know you have your best intentions. Do you mind if I just go with the boys now?''
‘'Sure,'' she said with real compassion. ‘'I guess I'll just go to a beauty salon with my friends. See you tomorrow''
Blaine nodded and went in for a hug for the sake of it.
.....
Becky and Kurt were standing outside the mall, waiting for Felix. As they talked yesterday, they would have a date pretty early since Kurt had some things to do for tomorrow's party. Felix had said on the phone that it would be no problem taking Becky home and then wherever she needed, in this case it was Papaya's.
The boy's dark blue car stopped by the sidewalk and got out of the car, the engine still running.
‘'Hey, Kurt,'' he greeted and placed a barely there kiss on the blue eyed boy's cheek. Becky stood beside them and made an ‘oooh' sound and Kurt gave her a look of ‘don't you even start'. Felix greeted Becky too and opened the passenger door for Kurt.
Becky said a cheerful goodbye to both of the boys and waved until she couldn't see the car anymore. She entered the diner and quickly found the table her new friends were sitting at. It was the loudest of all.
‘'Hey, nerds,'' she said casually and took a seat by the end of the table, smiling when everyone greeted her back.
‘'So, who of you are coming to the party tomorrow?'' Blaine asked, stirring his orange juice with his straw for no particular reason.
Becky and Sam answered with a ‘me'. Becky frowned when she didn't hear a ‘me' from Jeff.
‘'Jeff, aren't you coming?'' she asked, leaning more forward on the table.
‘'Oh, uh, oh yeah, me too,'' he said in slight confusion. ‘'Sorry, just...daydreaming.''
‘'Hey, where's Kurt?'' Sam asked to Becky. ‘'You went shopping with him today, didn't you?''
‘'Yes, we indeed did and I have to say he is the best shopping partner I've ever had,'' Becky gushed and noticed that Blaine smiled at that. ‘'He's on a date with his lover boy. The Felix guy has such a huge crush on him. They were so cute in the car ride-‘'
‘'Excuse me for a moment,'' Blaine said, sliding his chair back to get up. ‘'I will go order something.''
Becky looked as he went to the counters all the way on the other side of the diner. She was sensing that something was up with those two. Kurt was understandable, Blaine was a good looking guy and every not straight and even maybe straight boy would admire his body but Blaine was acting strange ever since Anthony had mentioned setting him up with his cousin. She didn't want to make him sad, just to clarify that Kurt was having a good time and there would be no reason to be protective. She guessed it wasn't the case. Sam was noticing the same thing.
Blaine leaned on both of his elbows on the counted, resting his head in his palms. He ordered an ice tea and got out his phone, looking at Kurt's name on there. (He had pleaded to get his number from Jeff)
His thumb ghosted over the name but then he pocketed his phone again, pulling it out again after a few seconds.
To Kurt:
Are you with him?
.....
After dropping off Becky, Felix headed to where he had planned their date. Kurt just sat in the passenger seat and enjoyed the peace and quiet. It wasn't awkward, at all. Kurt noticed that it was never weird to be around Felix from the very beginning and that was nice. Rarely he could feel so comfortable around others, but was that a good thing He didn't want to get into that too much. It was very sunny as usual in summer in Miami so he savored the sights as they drove down the streets.
Felix took them to some very beautiful park and they set down a blanket in the shadow of a tree. ‘'If you were a vegetable, what kind of vegetable would you be?''
Kurt made a confused face. ‘'Now what kind of question is that?''
Felix laughed and ran his hand over his product free hair. ‘'Ok. Here's another one. If you worked at the circus, what would be your job?''
Kurt grinned. ‘'So you'll keep asking silly questions, won't you!? Ok. I don't think I could go well with lions or tigers or any animal really, I definitely don't know a single magic trick and I also am not an acrobatic in any way. So that pretty much leaves me to be the equipment guy.''
Felix smiled at the answer. ‘'I used to be good at teaching my dog tricks. It was so much fun. Also, you would feel very proud. And I'm speaking in past tense because the dog is with my other relatives now, in the other side of America so I see him rarely now.''
‘'Let's talk about something less depressing,'' Felix teased after a moment of silence. ‘'Like...where would you like to travel? And don't think about money or anything. Just where?''
Kurt looked in the distance somewhere, thinking. ‘'I think Paris. To France in general. It would be so nice. I wouldn't want to go alone though.''
‘'Are you suggesting something there?'' Felix asked with a smirk and Kurt leaned closer to him, looking him in the eyes.
‘'Maybe I am, maybe I'm not.''
They stared at each other until Kurt's phone vibrated next to him with a text message. It was from Blaine. He knew because he'd had his number since yesterday when he went to the bathroom and so he asked Sam for it.
From Blaine:
Are you with him?
Kurt's frowned a little. What was this text message supposed to mean
Was Blaine being protective again? Did he need to ask Blaine's permission if he wants to go somewhere without him? Or was he just exaggerating this whole thing and Blaine was asking a simple question?
Though, that couldn't be the case. He could easily ask Becky that. She probably had told all the guys that already.
So he was just being protective.
Kurt sighed, muted his phone and placed it further away. He didn't want to answer right now when he was getting to know Felix. And especially because he was on a date after all.
‘'Is everything okay?'' Felix asked but politely didn't peek at Kurt's screen. ‘'I hope it's not your aunt.''
Kurt chuckled. ‘'I don't have a curfew yet. Especially not a four pm one.''
‘'How should I know?'' Felix said, teasingly. ‘'Maybe you're not such an innocent boy...I'm just getting to know you.''
Kurt smiled and after a moment he spoke again and what he said made the other boy laugh. ‘'Oh, I would be an asparagus.''
.....
The lunch was going by as usual with everyone. They were goofing around more than actually eating but that was the whole point. It's just how they've grown up together. Becky was new in the club but she definitely wasn't a shy girl so she was fitting in just like everyone else. It was like she's been here all along.
Besides, with a character like her, she had a lot of amazing stories to tell.
And that's what they usually did. Told stories. Because they didn't spend the whole day together obviously so there always was a lot to listen and a lot to tell.
Right now, the topic was best worst dates. The thing was that every time they sat in Papaya's they would go around the table and each tell a story of the topic. Jeff was the last to tell his story so he spoke, suggesting the next topic.
‘'Why don't we tell the worst pick-up lines. Like, that's fun right?''
No one saw Kurt coming but the brunette had heart the topic so he placed his palms on Jeff's shoulder, participating. ‘'Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?''
Kurt smiled and took a seat opposite Blaine and next to Becky, as the company laughed.
‘'Oh, once is just enough, Hummel,'' Blaine said with a grin, trying to make eye contact with Kurt. The blue eyed boy blushed at the comment and looked anywhere but Blaine. Sam and Becky shared a glance at the interaction. So far they were the only ones who really noticed that something was going on there.
It didn't stop the circle game though, time passing by quickly as they shared all the pick-up lines they knew or had heard.
‘'You're so sweet, you could put Hershey's out of business.''
‘'Excuse me, you dropped something – my jaw.''
‘'I seem to have lost my phone number. Can I have yours?''
‘'You know what's on the menu Me ‘n' U.''
And so the list went on and on.
Kurt realized he hadn't laughed so much in months. It was so relaxing to be in a company like this. So different from everyone back at Ohio. Here, everyone seemed more careless and accepting. It was astounding how much of a contrast Miami was to Lima.
He got a text from his aunt that told that she was getting off work in a minute. That meant he had to go home. It's not like he had a curfew or anything just he didn't have so much money to spend on gifts and he wanted to maybe make something sweet for the girl's birthday instead. He had asked his aunt for help so it all could go faster.
His aunt picked him up after a few minutes and he said he'd see them again tomorrow. The party was in the evening so who knew what would they do during the day.
Turned out, baking cupcakes was a great bonding experience. It also made Kurt realize he and Mildred were a great team. He knew the perfect recipe for mind-blowing cupcakes and Mildred, being the creative soul she was, did an incredible job decorating the sweets. All in all, the end product was totally satisfactory.
When he went to his room, he noticed that he barely had even talked to Blaine today. He sat down on his bed and checked the time on his phone. It was only 845 so he was sure the boy would still be up.
‘'Mildred, would you be a cool aunt and lend me the car for a little while'' he asked when he stepped into the woman's bedroom. He saw her eyes narrow so he pouted. ‘'I promise to be back before ten.''
‘'Of course, go, pumpkin,'' she waved with her hand and continued on with her book, smiling when Kurt squealed excitedly and closed the door behind himself.
The door opened again and her nephew's head peeked in again. ‘'It's not even fall to call people in names of fall vegetables yet, Mel.''
.....
Kurt parked his car somewhere a little away from Anderson's house, deciding to walk the little distance. He knew this was a spontaneous action but hell...today was weird between the both and he needed to know where they both stood. He would be going to his girlfriend's party tomorrow for fall pumpkin's sake.
He saw a few lights in the house as he walked up to the door. It was pretty quiet inside and he hoped Blaine was home. He could still be hanging out in the diner for all he knew.
When he knocked and didn't get an answer he decided to just go for it and enter the house. They both were good enough friends for that, right?
The first thing he noticed was piano music coming from the living room. Thankfully there was a little wall between the corridor and living room, so Kurt leaned against it, listening. It was a song that sounded familiar but he couldn't place a finger on what song it was exactly. He peeked into the room, remembering that the piano was faced away from the corridor and indeed, it was Blaine sitting there, looking like he was in his element, where he belonged.
‘'You must be Kurt.''
Kurt jumped and he felt his heart almost fall out of his mouth at the voice. He looked to the side from where the voice came from and a woman, who looked very much like Blaine, was sitting on a couch that faced the piano. How did Kurt miss her sitting there? She was right there, in front of the entrance door!
‘'Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you, dear,'' she smiled, straightening her white silk robe and walking towards him. ‘'I'm Pamela. But call me Pam.''
Kurt shook her hand. ‘'I'm Kurt, yes. Nice to meet you.''
The piano had stopped playing by the conversations and Blaine jumped up from the stool when he saw the guest.
‘'Kurt. Hi!''
Kurt waved to him awkwardly.
‘'I didn't know you were coming.''
‘'I didn't either,'' Kurt responded, tightening his hold on the small box in his hands. ‘'I can go if-‘'
‘'No, no, it's okay,'' Blaine's mother intervened. ‘'You go ahead and stay, I'll go up to my room.''
Both boys stood near the entrance, watching the woman go up the stairs. Blaine spoke up when she was out of sight. ‘'So...is there a reason you came or...?''
There definitely was tension between the both and that's exactly what Kurt was afraid of so he immediately wanted to brighten up the mood. ‘'Umm, I brought you cupcakes.''
Blaine smiled when Kurt handed him the small brown box. ‘'It has three in there. For your parents...''
At that Blaine's smile fell but barely. ‘'Thank you. Why don't we go upstairs''
At Kurt's nod, they went upstairs and into Blaine's room. Kurt was surprised though, when Blaine placed the box on his bedside table and led them to his balcony.
Ok, maybe they were going to sit here and enjoy the sunset or something, Kurt thought but that wasn't the case when Blaine held on to the pole for leverage and climbed the fence.
Then, in one swift move he was up on the roof. ‘'Come join me'' he asked. Kurt stared blissfully and his legs were moving forward. Yep, he was doing this, he really was climbing the Anderson's house. With a helpful hand, Kurt was up on the roof, making Blaine surprised that not for a second the boy complained about the outfit not being correct for climbing houses.
‘'It's...beautiful here,'' Kurt said silently, amazed by the dazzling view. Every sunset was beautiful obviously but from up here it was even better. They were not directly by the water so it gave a little view of the city itself with the sun coloring the water in the background. ‘'Do you come here often?''
‘'Well, that sounds like one of the cheesy pick-up lines right there,'' Blaine laughed but then answered more seriously. ‘'But yeah, ever since I could get up here I guess. Ever since I was tall enough.''
Pure silence stretched among them. Kurt didn't want this happening. The air between them had been unbearable all day.
‘'Look, I'm sorry,'' Kurt finally spoke, ‘'I'm sorry I didn't reply to your text earlier. I know I made it weirder. I was just-‘'
‘'Busy I know,'' Blaine shrugged. ‘'It's okay, Kurt, really. I shouldn't have asked that in the first place.'' He mumbled the last part. Honestly, he just didn't want to hear how Kurt's time with Felix went. (he refused to call it ‘date').
‘'I did get a little angry for a second because I don't want you to worry about me, Blaine,'' he explained, needing to get his thoughts out. ‘'I don't need you to be so protective. I know you're a few months older but still...I'm big enough to make my own decisions.''
‘'I know,'' Blaine whispered but Kurt heard it. They were leaning on their hands comfortably, facing the sunset and Kurt could swear his heart skipped a beat when he looked at the boy. His olive toned skin was glowing and his unruly hair was shining in the barely there sunlight. Even though he wasn't looking at Kurt, he could see how the orange tones of the sun made his eyes even more beautiful, if that was possible.
But then he looked away. ‘'I needed to make it right. We're going to your girlfriend's party after all. And you're basically the only person I know so I need a friend.''
Blaine smiled and then sighed. Sitting more forward and resting his arms on his bent knees. ‘'There's something really important I have to tell you, Kurt. And you have to know that you're very special because not everyone knows this.''
Kurt sat forward now too, wanting to be closer to Blaine. This really seemed important. Blaine was avoiding looking at him and his muscles were obviously tense.
‘'Vanessa ...she isn't technically my girlfriend,'' he told while nibbling his fingers. He was nervous that he was telling him this. He only knew Kurt for a few days but it was different with him, like they had this connection. He felt like he could tell Kurt anything. So here he was, shaking out his heart, something he didn't do often.
‘'What do you mean?'' Kurt questioned, very confused.
‘'That's a long story...''
‘'I'm here.''
Blaine's hear melt. ‘'She is like my fake girlfriend. It's something my manager, Nathaniel, made me do. He didn't really make me but to satisfy him, that's what I had to do. I didn't want to commit and for publicity I guess it's not a good thing for whatever reason. So she's there...''
Kurt listened silently but his head was bursting with questions. This was some unexpected information and he was processing it. Blaine noticed that so he continued after a minute.
‘'She's a great girl, believe me Kurt. Just not for me. I've never really felt more than a good friendship. But even that's more complicated now. It's all so messed up.''
‘'Do the guys know?'' he asked after a pause.
‘'Yes and no. Yes because they know she was ‘assigned' to me so to say. No because they think that amongst all this pretending I've actually fallen for her and have taken her for my actual girlfriend. I think that's what she thinks too.''
‘'Oh, Blaine...'' Kurt was at a loss of words. This was one big mess.
‘'And before you ask, no, I can't get another publicist slash manager slash all the other crap I need. He's my step-father's best friend and let's just say that if I make him unhappy, it's gonna be bad for me. My step-father isn't the nicest man. At least I think so.''
‘'I didn't know that you had a step-father,'' Kurt glanced at Blaine again.
‘'Well, we haven't had a serious conversation yet really, have we?!''
Kurt nodded at that.
‘'And I'm not being protective of you. There's a whole different reason for my behavior,'' Blaine finally looked at Kurt. ‘'I like you Kurt. A lot. More than a friend.''
Kurt was taken aback. Like a truck just hit him. He finally had a crush on a guy who actually liked him back. Miracles did happen.
They were leaning closer and closer. Their noses were almost touching. Blaine could feel Kurt's warm breath on his lips. But Kurt pulled back.
This could not happen. It just couldn't. He didn't want to get Blaine into trouble and mess this whole thing up more than it was already. ‘'I should go. There's a party we have to attend tomorrow and we should get some good sleep. Tomorrow's going to be a long night.''
Miracles did happen. But this one would be a tough one.
