Kurt watches, horrified as Blaine falls to the ground. He doesn’t know what to do, he only met Blaine yesterday and he’s just watched his life fall apart at the seams.
The Surgeon looks concerened, ‘I’m sorry Mr…’
‘Hummel, Kurt Hummel’
‘Well Mr Hummel, are you a good friend of the Andersons?’
‘N…’ begins Kurt, about to tell her that he only, in fact, met Blaine yesterday, he knows nothing about him, but then he sees Blaine on the floor, holding his head in pure anguish. ‘Yes, I am… what do I need to do?’
‘You need to be there for him, he’s just lost his wife and… well’ Kurt looks into her eyes and sees the mutual understanding; both Kurt and the Surgeon know how it feels to lose someone.
Kurt nods and leans down to Blaine, he helps him stand, ‘Thank you’ he says to the surgeon and he turns to leave.
‘Mr Hummel?’ he turns ‘I’m sorry but… the baby, well, the baby is fine’ The baby. Kurt had forgotten, he looks at Blaine, hoping to see some recognition in him. Anything to tell Kurt he knew his child had survived. ‘A little young perhaps, but fine, we’ll observe overnight but he seemed to be destined to be early anyway’ Kurt nods. The surgeon helps him walk Blaine out of the little room.
They sleep on benches in the hall way. People rush past, all day, all night. Kurt might have been hungry at some point but he isn’t now. He thinks in his slumber, sure he likes Blaine, who wouldn’t? But he met him literally yesterday and he’s just watched Blaine’s life come crashing down around him. It also kills Kurt that Blaine won’t even look at the baby. It was Kurt that donned the yellow tabard and the gloves and was handed a baby that wasn’t his. He rocked it a little but he’d never held a baby. He didn’t want to drop it or hurt it, especially as it was nothing to do with him.
…………
It’s 7am by the time someone comes to fetch them. Kurt has been pacing up and down for an hour, Blaine sat, hunched over, his face in his hands. Neither of them speaking; Kurt because he has nothing to say, nothing he CAN say and Blaine because his silence is the only thing holding him together, God only knows what he’ll do if he breaks that barrier. A nurse with a clipboard and long lashes approaches,’ Mr…Anderson’ she says, looking at him with concern.
‘Sorry,’ interrupts Kurt, ‘Blaine’s a little… shocked… his wife…’ he says, his voice dropping to a whisper as he steals a look at Blaine out of the corner of his eye.
‘Of course’ says the nurse ‘Well baby girl Anderson is ready to go home, if you’d just like to follow me’ she points her head down the corridor.
‘Uh, sure’ says Kurt, he pats Blaine on the arm as the Nurse moves away, waiting for them
‘Blaine, honey, we have to go get your baby… your, your daughter'
Blaine stands with Kurt’s gentle pulling but does not look at him. His shoulders are hunched and he radiates ‘Broken’, Kurt shivers as he’s reminded of his father.
They follow the nurse to the paediatric ICU. Another nurse brings a grey hospital-issue car/carry seat she holds it up to Blaine hesitantly but when he makes no effort to take it she looks at Kurt. He reaches out a hand and takes the baby. ‘Thank you’ he says and places a commanding hand to turn Blaine and walk him out, he forces himself and Blaine to keep walking. He knows what looks the Nurses are sharing behind his back and it takes all of strength not to turn. To run back and tell them it’s all a mistake, he never committed to this, he doesn’t know Blaine, he can’t look after a baby. But he keeps walking. He walks until they reach blinding morning sunlight and rows of yellow taxi cabs.
He hails one, lifting the car seat to look at the baby. Exact replicas Blaine’s eyes stare back at him, golden honey and his heart melts. He reaches out his pinkie finger and the baby grabs hold. Kurt knows his trapped now. He’s caught up in the lives of a strange man and his baby. A cab beeps at him and he ushers Blaine in the back. It’s a moment before he realises he doesn’t even know where Blaine lives.
