Author's Notes:

Almost all of the dialogue in the dream sequence was taken verbatim from the episode, “Heart.” In case that wasn't clear enough, it means that I didn't write it.

As he slept that night, Kurt had a dream. He was in Breadstix, and a gorilla was standing right in front of him, holding a heart-shaped box of chocolates and a card that read “I think I love you.”

“Wait,” Kurt said. “You think you love me?”

Now David Karofsky appeared in front of Kurt, no longer in a gorilla costume, but, inexplicably, wearing his football uniform, complete with pads. “I hated who I was,” Karofsky explained, “and I took it out on you because I hated who you were. So proud. I've wanted to call you since that night at Scandals.”

Suddenly, and without moving, Kurt and Karosky were in a booth, side by side, and Karofsky's arm was around Kurt, and Kurt wanted to run, but his limbs were leaden and he couldn't move. “It's taken me a while,” Karofsky continued, “but for the first time in my life I'm trying to be honest about how I feel.”

Now Kurt was across the table from Karofsky, “And I'm flattered. I really am, but, David, you just think that you love me. You don't really love me.”

Suddenly Karofsky was on the other side of the room, but Kurt could still hear him like he was right there, “No, you've helped me so much Kurt, you don't know. I haven't come out at school yet, but maybe I will next year.”

Now David was at the door, and Kurt was calling to him, “David, look, I am so proud of you for coming so far, and I want you to be happy, and you will be happy, but I'm with Matt, and I like you, but just as friends.”

David was even further away now, despite the fact that he was still standing in the doorway. In a broken voice, he called, “I should go.”

“Wait!” Kurt shouted, “No, you don't have to go!”

“I hope you like the candies,” Karofsky called, tears streaming down his face. “The butterscotch ones are my favorite.”

Then Karofsky opened the door, and outside was a jeering crowd who began pelting him with spaghetti and shouting, “Faggot! Queer! Homo!” and Kurt tried to run to Karofsky and help him, but he couldn't move his feet.

Kurt awoke with a start, sitting upright in bed and gasping for breath. When Kurt had gone to Breadstix those years ago assuming he was going to meet Blaine, he had met Karofsky, instead. Although Kurt gently rebuffed Karofsky's advances, a boy from Karofsky's new school had seen them together and had noticed Karofsky take Kurt's hand. He spread the news of Karofsky's well-hidden sexual orientation all around the school, and, in his unbearable shame, Karofsky hung himself. By the time his dad found him, it was too late.

Kurt shook his head, trying to clear it of the depressing memory. He wondered why he would have a dream about that experience now.  And then Kurt's blood ran cold when he realized that in his dream he had said, “I'm with Matt.”

Shit!

Kurt hadn't been able to break up with Matt earlier that day as he planned. He had hung up the phone with Blaine, resolved to end things with Matt, but it turned out that Matt had gone to Columbus to be with family.

Sure, now he goes to Columbus.

Pondering the problem before school started, Kurt had picked up his phone to send a text to Matt, instead.

Kurt: I'm breaking up with you.

Kurt read and deleted the message without sending it.  Matt seemed like a nice guy; he didnt deserve that.  Then Kurt tried again.

Kurt: You know how I said I love you? Well, I don't.

Kurt deleted that one, too.

Kurt: I don't think we should see each other anymore, because you kind of skeeve me out.

Delete.

Kurt: It's not me, it's you and also my evil twin.

Delete.

Kurt: I think dating you would interfere with all the sex I'm planning to have with Blaine.

Delete.

Sighing, Kurt finally went with the tried and true.

Kurt: When you get back, we have to talk.

That was several hours ago, and Kurt hadn't heard back at all. Then his phone chirped, but instead of it being Matt, it was—of all people—Sebastian.

Sebastian: Hey, sexy thing, are we still on for Scandals tomorrow night?

Scandals? Why would Kurt go to Scandals (again), and why was Sebastian texting him? Kurt nearly send a message back telling Sebastian to forget it, but then he reconsidered. If Sebastian was going to be at Scandals, Blaine would be there, too. Kurt didn't want to miss that opportunity. He texted back.

Kurt: See you tomorrow.
