Thanks to Mesined who set me straight on a minor character. I had to make a small alteration to the last chapter, so if you read it soon after it was posted, you might want to go back and re-read the end again. Sorry. Its what I get for not having a Beta.
And here the Squirrel goes crazy non-canon. Try to deal.
Kurt woke up, looked over at his valet, rubbed his eyes, looked again, and then grabbed his phone: Tues, Nov. 9, 2010.
Yes!
Two sets of clothing hung on his valet. One included a fabulous sweater-cardigan thing and a vintage bow-tie adorned with acrylic clocks. Hanging behind that ensemble was a blue jacket with incredible stitching detail, a white shirt and a red tie. Kurt had no trouble remembering this day or the clothes associated with it; it was etched in his memory both as one of the best days of his life, and also as the story he told all his New York friends when they asked Blaine and him, “So, how did you two meet?”
Kurt didn't personally remember what he said to Blaine when he saw him for the first time on this day as he was descending the stairs at Dalton Academy, but, apparently, Blaine did. According to Blaine, Kurt called out to him and said, “Excuse me, I'm new here. Where is everyone going?” And then Blaine said that he knew immediately that Kurt was a spy, dressed cute as he was in that Demeulemeesteresque jacket, but he was so beautiful that Blaine couldn't resist touching him, so he grabbed his wrist and dragged him through the halls of the school, placing him front and center so that he could sing “Teenage Dream” right to him.
Kurt didn't remember it quite that way, although he always smiled indulgently when Blaine told his version. Kurt remembered that he called to Blaine and said, “Blah, blah, blah,” and then Blaine could have said anything in reply because Kurt was suddenly swimming in the most amazing molten honey eyes, and then he was swooning as Blaine sang about getting his heart beating in his skin tight jeans, and then, later, Blaine revealed that he was gay, and it took every ounce of Kurt's willpower not to launch himself across the table and beg Blaine to take him into his arms.
Oh, yes, this day was going to be fabulous.
For the first time, Kurt was almost glad to be caught in some cosmic time warp. It was great to relive this first Blaine moment again and again in his mind, but it was something else to actually get to physically experience it one more time. Clearly, whatever small parts Kurt had screwed up in this dimension had not impacted his chance at meeting Blaine again. Maybe it was fate. Maybe, no matter what, Kurt and Blaine were destined to be together.
He hoped so.
Kurt dressed in his cardigan and clock bow tie and left for school with a bounce in his step. Thinking back, he really didn't remember much about the school day itself, other than he ended it by going to Dalton Academy and seeing Blaine for the first time. He vaguely remembered that he was very mopey that day, and he was in a snit as he drove to check out the competition. He didnt remember why. Whatever happened, it didn't matter. He knew that as soon as school let out, he would be hopping in his Navigator and high-tailing it to Westerville.
And then he would see his beautiful, amazing boyfriend again for the first time.
He couldn't wait.
Kurt went to school and headed to his locker, eager to get the day started. As soon as it was over, he would be on his way to see his one true love. What could be better? The day was just a regular day, and he just had to get through it, just like every other day of his life until he met Blaine: boring, boring, boring. He could endure.
However, as Kurt dialed the combination to his locker, he was surprised to feel warm hands reach around and cover his eyes. His own hands went up and he was stunned to feel boy's hands under his fingertips. Spinning around, he saw Matt.
Didn't he move to Columbus?
“Morning,” the boy said, leaning in and kissing Kurt on the cheek.
Oh-kay.
“Morning?” Kurt responded tentatively.
Matt looked a little flushed when he said, “Your outfit is super cute, Kurt. You know, I'm really excited about our date Friday night. It's the third date, so you know what that means.”
Kurt really, really didn't.
Fortunately, he was saved from responding when he felt a hand shove him from behind, and as his face hit the locker he heard a voice say, “Get a room, homos.”
Kurt spun around indignantly, but then his jaw dropped. Karofsky.
The sight of him made Kurt slump against his locker, winded. Kurt had never stopped feeling guilty about David Karofsky's death. Dave had tormented Kurt in school, assaulted him in the locker room, intimidated him with death threats, and then changed. Afraid to come out of the closet, but ashamed of how he had treated Kurt, he had transferred schools their senior year, but Kurt ran into him occasionally. The story of Kurt and Dave came to a climax when Dave confessed his love for Kurt on Valentine's Day and Kurt rejected him. Unfortunately, one of Dave's classmates had witnessed the two of them together on the most romantic night of the year and reported to his fellow students that Dave had spent his Valentines Day on a date with a man. A few days later, Dave was dead, having hung himself rather than bear the shame of being labeled as gay.
Although Kurt hadn't been the one who outed Dave, and he thought that he had let him down easily, he could never quite shake the feeling that he could have done more to have prevented the football player's death. The reality was he hadn't cared that much about David or David's feelings until after he died. He treated Dave decently, but no more than he treated anyone else. He always wondered what would have happened if he had been a little more compassionate, a little more understanding about the inner-turmoil that Dave was feeling. Would David still be alive?
Kurt felt a soft hand on his face. “Kurt, are you okay? Did he hurt you?” Matt asked.
Kurt flinched away from Matt's touch, and then he felt a little guilty and gave Matt a small, tight-lipped smile, “No, I'm fine,” he answered.
But he wondered if he'd ever be fine again.
