This chapter should be longer than it is, but Im suffering a horrible cold and want to post what is readable for my five faithful readers before I pass out in a NyQuil-induced haze. More tomorrow, I promise.
Kurt moved through his school day in a daze. By the time he made it to Glee Club and Mr. Schuester announced that their competition at Sectionals would be the Dalton Academy Warblers and some old people called the Hipsters, he was so distracted that he forgot to even react when Santana made a really rude comment about “a million awesome gay jokes.”
Then Mr. Schuester gave them a really lame assignment to come up with a song for the boys to sing against the girls, and Kurt just sat with the boys, stunned about the other things going on in his “new” life, while Finn, Puck, and Artie brainstormed a lot of classic rock songs that would capitalize on Finn's pleasant but otherwise uninteresting voice. No one asked Kurt's opinion (which was good, because he wasn't really listening), and no one suggested that Kurt spy on Dalton Academy (which was bad, for reasons). Additionally, Matt kept edging his seat closer and closer to Kurt, who tried very hard to ignore the hurt looks that Matt was giving him.
When Glee finally—thankfully—ended, Matt grabbed Kurt's hand as he was leaving the choir room and asked, “Kurt, what's wrong? Did I do something?”
Kurt gave Matt a blank look, then he shook his head and tried to pull himself together. He forced a smile, “No, Matt. You're great. I'm...I'm…I'm just worried about our chances at Sectionals.” He paused for a moment, then he said, “I think I'll drive out to Westerville and see what the competition is up to.”
“I can go with you,” Matt volunteered hopefully.
“No! Uh, I mean…” Kurt scrambled for a reason, and came up blank.
Thankfully, Matt saved him. He put his hand on Kurt's arm. “I get it. It's a rich, private prep school. They probably don't have any black kids, and I wouldn't blend. It would be hard to spy.”
Kurt nearly laughed. First of all, he knew from experience that there were more black kids at Dalton than at McKinley. Second of all, Matt was about the whitest black kid Kurt had ever seen. I mean, his name was Matt, for Pete's sake. Rachel was more “ethnic.”
However, Kurt had the presence of mind to throw Matt a bone. He put his hands on each of Matt's shoulders and squeezed. “Thanks, Matt. I knew you'd understand.” He smiled.
Matt's face lit up like a Christmas tree, and Kurt felt very, very guilty.
Some time later Kurt was racing down the highway again, this time dressed in his fashion-forward version of the Dalton uniform. He hardly saw the road as he mulled over so many thoughts.
First, there was Finn. Bouncing around in time as he was, Kurt wasn't sure how he could save him. Finn had died in an accident—a really, really stupid accident. Kurt wasn't sure how he could keep him from being in the wrong place at the wrong time once again, if Kurt couldn't be sure to be there, but he had to figure something out.
Unfortunately, nothing came to mind.
Second, there was Matt. Clearly, they had been on two dates, which didn't exactly make them boyfriends (did it?), but Matt was certainly looking forward to their third date, because they were going to…what? Kiss? Have sex? Pick out china patterns? Watch Harry Potter movies?
Kurt had certainly had a third date with Blaine, but he couldn't have said what it was. Blaine and he had started differently. First they were friends, and they hung out and did a lot of things that seemed like dating. Then they kissed. Kurt smiled at that memory. Then they continued to do what they always did, but now there was kissing, too, and, later, there was other stuff. Really, really good stuff.
Kurt had a third date with Adam during that horrible time that Kurt and Blaine were apart, but Kurt didn't remember that date being particularly significant, either. Maybe it was because Kurt always held back with Adam. He was attracted to him—who wouldn't be?—but he wasn't Blaine, and Kurt always felt that difference.
At any rate, Kurt needed to break up with Matt (or something) before the momentous third date, but he hated to hurt his feelings. Matt seemed so nice. Or, at least, Kurt guessed he was. Kurt realized he was dating a guy that he actually didn't know, at all. The first time around, Kurt didn't think he'd ever said one word to Matt, which was kind of weird, because they were in Glee together, after all.
Shit.
Third, there was Karofsky. If history was repeating itself, Karofsky was going to kiss him. Kurt put the back of his hand to his mouth as he remembered that. He felt so violated. He wasn't sure he could willingly go through it again, and, really, a kiss was a pretty easy thing to avoid if you knew it was coming. However, Kurt also felt broken when Karofsky died. Could he afford to worry more about Karofsky this time around? He didn't know.
Finally, there was Blaine. There was always Blaine. No matter what, Kurt had to get back to Blaine. It was the most important thing. Wasn't it?
Kurt's mulling was interrupted by his realization that he was pulling into the guest parking lot at Dalton. He felt an unexpected shiver of anticipation crawl up his spine. He checked his hair in the rearview mirror. It wasn't good, but it was right. He also checked his breath and quickly crunched a mint, just to be safe. Finally, he pinched his own cheeks to raise a little color and applied just the right amount of chapstick to his lips to look kissable but not glossy. Then he exited his Navigator, entered Dalton, and began his descent down the stairway as Dalton students rushed around him, all headed for the same destination.
