Kurt's eyes fluttered open. Pain, he was in pain. A lot of it. He tried to work out where he was for a second. Bright lights, lots of white. He was in a hospital, but why? He was confused for a second, then he remembered the gunshot, then the pain again in his shoulder and in his head. He needed a nurse. "Nurse, nurse!" He called. "Finn?"
Finn: Finn had dozed off for a while but woke when he heard Kurt call his name, he sat up, "Hey man, I am glad you are awake. They gave you some pain meds about an hour ago, so they can't give you any more for about an hour yet."
Blaine: Seeing Kurt just lying there had been horrible. Blaine had read through the doctors chart at the foot of the bed so that he knew exactly how Kurt was doing and he hasn't taken his eyes off him since he finished reading. So when his eyes finally flickered Blaine finally let himself breathe. He took a step forward as Finn spoke. Waiting for the tall man to finish before speaking. He wanted to tell him to stay still or to scold him for not being careful enough or something. But all that came out was a sobbing choked noise that only just sounded like the word he wanted, "Kurt." He carefully sat on the edge of the bed and picked up Kurt's hand minding the wires and IV things and carefully pressing a kiss to Kurt's palm.
Kurt: "Shit, not for an hour? Kurt winced "This should be fun." Kurt then looked at Finn seriously, realizing what his partner had done for him. "You saved my life man... Thanks." He registered that Blaine, his Blaine, was there looking worried and upset and had called his name. "Blaine, hey hon." he said looking at him softly. There was so much he wanted to say to him. He wanted him to know that he was sorry that he scared him, that he loved him. But none of that came out just yet "I guess I'm grounded now huh?" Kurt smiled weakly. Wincing again in pain he asked "So what do the doctors say?"
Blaine: "So grounded." Blaine couldn't help but smile. Now that Kurt was awake he at least had more hope that he'd be just fine. Blaine had read the report and knew that barring any freak accidents happening in the operating room that Kurt would be fine. "Uh, well I haven't actually seen one. I only got here a little while ago." Blaine explained, "They need to take the bullet out, it's still in your shoulder. So you need to keep your cute little butt and shoulders and face and just all of you where you are so that it doesn't move at all okay? But I know they were waiting for you to come round before they operated. Just because of the concussion and to be sure and everything." Blaine carefully intertwined his fingers with Kurt's. "But I took a look at your chart myself, and granted I haven't had a living patient for a while, but I think you're going to be just fine as long as you get some rest."
Kurt: Kurt felt Blaine's fingers intertwined with his own. Blaine had kept his promise, he stuck around, and Kurt was so thankful. "I'll try...Blaine, thank you for being here, Even though I look like crap."
It was then that a nurse came in "Hey Officer Hummel, glad you're awake! I'm Sally, I'm your nurse. The doctor will be by in a couple to look at you." She said buzzing around checking the monitors and making a few notes. "You're partner here has been worried about you. Scale of one to 10 how's your pain?" She asked. "About a 7." I respond wincing again. She notices hour hands together and asks "So who is this handsome guy?" she smiles. I smile fondly and look over at you. "My boyfriend, Blaine Anderson."
Finn: Finn smiled as he sat there watching all that was going on. He also liked the view; Finn thought the nurse that Kurt had was gorgeous. She was tall, had long brown hair and eyes that were.... "Oh wow!" Finn mumbled as he looked right at her. The nurse saw Finn looking right at her and she just smiled. Finn looked down and away so as not to say anything more that might cause a problem.
Blaine: "You still look a damn sight better than Hudson." Blaine joked shooting a look at Finn that clearly said ‘My boyfriend nearly died, you can't get angry with me and really I am joking'. He was just so happy that Kurt was going to be okay. When Finn had said ‘shot' Blaine had obviously assumed the worst. Anything else was a pure relief.
He could feel his cheeks turn scarlet at the nurse's question and Kurt's answer and couldn't stop himself from mumbling "I'm not that handsome..." under his breath. But still making sure to keep his hand in Kurt's, gently squeezing to let him know that he wasn't going anywhere. He chuckled at Finn's comments and grinned up at the nurse. "Looks like I'm not the only one with an admirer." he smiled, just as the first doctor entered the room.
Kurt: Kurt chuckled at Blaine "I dress better than him anyway." He turned to smirk at Finn. "You should get her number you big lug, I didn't see a ring on it." Kurt teases. Just then another sharp pain shot through his head and he squeezed Blaine's hand in response.
"Officer Hummel?" the doctor called walking into the room. "I'm Dr. Ruble, he stopped short when he saw Blaine and Kurt's hands together. "Um normally we only allow family in these rooms." he said looking disapproving. Kurt glared. "They are family Doc, understand?" in a tone that dared the doctor to challenge him. "I understand officer..." the doctor relented. "So let's take a look at your shoulder wound okay?" The doc said. Gently peeling away the bandage, he took a close look. "Based on the X-Rays, the bullet is a little further in than I originally thought." the doctor began. "I'd like to take you in to surgery in about 3 hours, but I'm still a little worried about your concussion with the anesthesia."
Kurt: Kurt sees Puck and Finn walk into his room. "Hey guys..." he says sleepily. His hand still firmly intertwined with Blaine's.
Puck: "Hey Hummel, how the hell did this happen?" Puck asks as he approaches him.
Kurt: "I'm honestly a little bit blurry on the details." Kurt sighs. "we were going to question this Jones guy about the Watkins case, but as soon as we got up to the porch, he opened fire. I don't know what happened after that...
Finn: You fell to the ground as soon as you were hit. I got you out of the line of fire as soon as I saw you go down. Yes, Jones was arrested and that bastard is going to be in jail a long time!
Puck turns to Kurt. "Next time let the bullet go through ya, okay?" he smiles slightly. "I'm just relieved you're alive."
Kurt: "Thanks Puckerman...Me too." Sees Quinn walk in a few seconds after Puckerman and Finn. "Fabray, hey sweetie. Who told you what happened?"
Quinn: "Hudson texted me and word got around the precinct. How are you, sweetheart"
Kurt: 'Fabulous...GSW to the shoulder, and a concussion, but I'll live. They'll take me for surgery in a couple of hours." Pain surged in his shoulder and he squeezed Blaine's hand again, and winced in pain. "Hail, hail the gangs all here huh?" He says looking around the room at Puck, Finn, Quinn.
Quinn: frowns. "Oh, Kurt. But you're alive and that's what matters to me." Sighs and looks around. "I guess we are."
Kurt: looks at Quinn softly. "Yeah, I'm lucky, that's for sure." Kurt looks around at his friends realizing the truth in that statement. He was lucky to have the SVU team and he was lucky to have Blaine. Kurt's mind wandered to some of the pending cases he had that would need attention before he got back. "Oh crap almost forgot; Puckerman, Fabray, can one of you two help John Parsons file charges in the swingers case? He was scared to file initially, because of the gay thing, but I think he's ready to file.
Blaine: "I'll take what I can get." Blaine smiled softly. "I know you're good at what you do though Kurt. This is all just... just part of it all... Doesn't make it suck any less... But just... don't ever be sorry for being as brave as you are Kurt. Even when I threaten to ground you." Blaine told Kurt earnestly, meeting his gaze. He nodded quietly in the background as Kurt told the others to be careful. "I'll go. I can bring in your things in the morning. Just let me know what you want and I'll get it all. These two can focus on getting this stupid case wrapped up. I'll go in later once I've seen for myself that they got that chunk of metal out of your shoulder all right and everything. And before you argue, just know that I won't be able to work well until I know you're absolutely 100% through the danger zone. I know first hand how quickly things can change in an operating room so I will be here to see you when you come out okay?
Kurt: How was it that Blaine had become so central to his life, that he would be willing to do all this for him. They had only know each a month. "That's sweet of you, thanks Blaine." Kurt said sincerely stroking Blaine's hand with his thumb. "My Dad's coming in tomorrow, so I guess you'll get to meet him." Kurt said cautiously.
Kurt: just started to drift off when Nurse Sally came in...
"Hey guys, I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but I think we better say goodnight..." she said looking at Puck, Quinn and Blaine. "Detective Hummel here needs some rest before surgery in the morning.
Kurt woke up a little. "Oh is it time already?" he asked. "Puckerman, Fabray, thank you so much for coming, it means a lot..." he said. He motioned for Blaine to stay back a second.
Quinn: "Any time, hun." she walked over and kissed his cheek. "You get some rest and I'll see you tomorrow after surgery.
Kurt: "Okay, Probably Blaine or Hudson will give you a call, when I'm out of surgery." He put his fingers to his lips and blew her a kiss. "Be safe out there.
Blaine waved at Quinn and Puck as they headed out. "I'll be there in a minute guys. I'm just... saying goodnight and everything." He didn't want to go yet. Honestly there was still an irrational part of his brain that was telling him he'd come back in the morning to find out that Kurt had died or something. He waited until they'd left the room before he leaned in and pressed his lips firmly to Kurt's. "I'll come back tomorrow and everything. Like I said I would. I swear though Kurt. If you do anything stupid like die in surgery or push yourself and make this worse or anything I will personally kill you myself here. You hear me?" He pressed another kiss to Kurt's cheek this time. "Just get plenty of rest and you'll be fine okay?" He squeezed his hand tighter, "And just know that I'll be here when you get out of surgery. I'll get your moisturizers and things and I can be here all morning. I'll have to go into the office in the afternoon at least for a bit but I'm going to be here as much as I can I promise."
Kurt: "Thank you, so much....I know it'll be fine." Kurt sighed, emotion building in him. "There's just something I need you to know......, in case things are..nnot fine." Kurt was struggling with his words. Why was this so hard for him to say? Maybe it was because he knew things could go wrong in surgery, maybe it was because these were words he took very seriously and he only said it if he truly meant it. But he honestly couldn't bear the thought of going into surgery tomorrow without saying it. Kurt took a deep breath, and winced because it hurt a little. "Blaine...I need you to know" He paused, and looked directly into Blaine's eyes...."I love you..."
Blaine's heart was fluttering and thudding in his chest when Kurt told him he had to tell him something. Was it bad? Had he missed something on the chart? Had the doctors said something else? Had Blaine done something wrong? But Blaine kept quiet, his eyes firmly locked on Kurt. He heard the words Kurt said, heard the shaky, fluttering intake of breath as he slowly started to understand what he'd said. When the rest of him finally caught up, the widest, brightest smile he'd ever let himself smile crossed his face. "You... that's... Kurt I-I love you too. So much. A-and I'm not just saying it and I know it's crazy soon but you said it first and I know you got shot and this is all kind of crazy and that I'm talking way too fast but I just..." Blaine finally stopped and leaned in to press a tender kiss to Kurt's lips, cupping his cheek with one hand and carefully angling his head up, just a little bit more. "Hearing you say that though... just...you have no idea how much that means to me Kurt. How much you mean to me. I love you so much."
Kurt could feel the truth of Blaine's heartfelt response as he kissed him. A few tears escaped his eyes. "I know it's crazy, but..with everything that's happened, I just.....I just couldn't let you leave without telling you that." Kurt gave Blaine's hand a squeeze. "It's nice to hear it too." He said with watery eyes.
Pulling himself back to together a bit, Kurt could see the Nurse looking in the room as if ready to ask Blaine to leave again. "Okay, okay.. Now that we got that out of the way" He chuckled, mildly embarrassed at his show of emotion. "You'd better go before we get in trouble..." Kurt pulled him in for a final kiss. "I'll see you tomorrow, okay." Kurt said this more as a promise than a casual see you later.
