Good Morning Blaine
When he arrived at the top of the stairs and entered the kitchen he was met with his father looking on the brink of tears, it was then he remembered what day it was, today was the day his mom died.
“Morning dad,” said Kurt walking over and giving Burt a hug.
“Hey kiddo,” it was clear he was trying to hide the heartbreak that still lingered over losing Lizzie; she was Burt’s first love. “You want waffles? I made them”
“Sure” said Kurt, he’d just have to go for a longer run tomorrow morning, today he’d do anything to make his dad happier. It was going to be a very long day for the both of them: the memories, the questions, the phone calls from relatives.
“So, I’ll pick you up after school and we’ll go see your mom” said Burt holding back the tears “and-and then I’ll take you out somewhere nice for dinner, wherever you like.”
“Dad? Are you going to be okay, I mean I could stay and…” said Kurt, he really hated seeing his dad upset it broke his heart.
“No, there’s no need Kurt, I’ll be fine.”
“Are you sure dad?”
“Yes Kurt.”
“Okay, if you are really sure. I should go, Rachel will be here soon.”
“I’m sure, now go and I’ll see you later.” said Burt, giving Kurt one last quick hug before allowing him to go meet Rachel.
Rachel’s car pulled up just as Kurt left his house.
“Hey Kurt” said Rachel as he climbed in to the car. “You okay today?” a sad smile on her face
“Alright I guess. My dad’s pretty upset; I really breaks my heart to see him hurt so badly.” said Kurt returning Rachel’s smile half heartedly.
“Oh honey, you guys visiting her tonight?”
“Yeah, dad’s picking me up after school, so I don’t need a lift. Thanks again for doing this Rach… you know how I get today.” Rachel nodded. “I still really miss her you know, it’s been 10 years and I still miss her.”
“I know Kurt, I know, and you will always miss her, she’s your mom.” she said reaching across the console and taking Kurt’s hand, she gave it a quick squeeze.
The journey to school was filled with nostalgia for Kurt: his mind wandered to what little he remembered about his mother, tears falling silently down his cheeks.
Rachel knew how sad today made Kurt, his mom had meant a lot to him. They arrived at school, walked to the canteen, bought coffee and headed to homeroom.
“Hey Kurt” said Blaine smiling, until he saw Kurt's red puffy eyes “What’s up Kurt? Are you okay?”
Blaine took in Kurt's attire and remembered what day it was. He opened his arms and allowed Kurt to fall into them.
“Thank you Blaine.”
“How are you feeling today, Kurt?” he asked sitting down and pulling the chair next to him out for Kurt to sit down.
“Well, I could be better I guess.” said Kurt, reaching out a taking Blaine’s hand. “I remember the first time I took you to see her.”
Kurt’s mind was cast back to that cold March afternoon.
“Kurt are you sure, I mean it’s yours and your dad’s special place.”
“Yes I’m sure, I want to show you off to her, you’re my boyfriend”
Kurt was taking Blaine to ‘meet’ his mom, Kurt frequently went to visit his mom’s grave to just talk to her, share the milestones she was missing.
“Oh, okay then… if you’re really sure.”
“BLAINE! You are coming with me, if I’m really honest I really don’t like coming here alone anyway, I need someone with me.” said Kurt, turning to face Blaine as he pulled up at the cemetery.
They climbed out of the car, hands linked, and weaved in and out of the various head stones. Blaine bowed his head, reading some of the inscriptions then they stopped in front of a large white marble head stone with gold lettering.
“Hi mom,” said Kurt kneeling, placing a bunch of lilies at the base of the head. “Things are going really great, schools a lot better now, I’m a lot happier there… oh and remember that boy I told you about, last time… well he asked me out! Yeah, I’ve brought him here; I wanted you to meet him.”
Kurt reached out his hand to Blaine, who took it and carefully crouched down next to Kurt. He glanced at Kurt he wasn’t really sure what he was supposed to do.
“Just say ‘hi’, Blaine.” said Kurt, petting his shoulder.
It still amazed Blaine, even though he’d known him for almost a year and they had been dating two months, that Kurt could always tell what was on his mind.
“Errm, hi Mrs Hummel, I’m Blaine. Your son is amazing, and between you and me” he said glancing at Kurt. “I think I’m in love with him.”
“I love you too, Blaine” said Kurt, going to press a soft kiss to Blaine's cheek, but Blaine turned his face and captured Kurt's lips I his, sucking on his lower lip, nibbling gently.
“I love you, Kurt. So, so much” said Blaine, his breath ghosting over Kurt's lips. “You really helped me the day I met you.”
“And you saved me, so we’re even I think” said Kurt.
They spent the afternoon sat cross-legged, hands linked telling Lizzie about their relationship, their first date, first kiss, first time they had a family dinner with Blaine, and they laughed at the memories. As dusk began to fall, they decided to head home.
“She really likes you. I wish she was here to see how happy you’ve made me, Blaine.” said Kurt tears stung his eyes.
“Hey, now. Baby, shush, she knows. I know she knows. She’s always here with you, she’s in your heart, and is always watching over you okay?”
“Thank-you Blaine, you really are amazing. I really don’t know what ive done to deserve you as a friend, let alone a boyfriend.”
“Ahh, it is I who is not worthy of you my dear.” said Blaine sweeping Kurt in to a dip, “but I will try every day to make you proud of me”
Then Blaine planted a kiss firmly on Kurt's lips, sucking on the lower, allowing Kurt's tongue to trace his upper. Kurt’s lips parted and Blaine's tongue darted into his mouth, swiping it over his teeth. He withdrew his tongue and Kurt’s entered his mouth sliding around his tongue. They parted after a few minutes and Blaine helped Kurt upright again.
“I am proud,” said Kurt linking arms with Blaine, “I’m proud to have you on my arm, to call you my boyfriend”
“Yeah, me too… It was the first time I told you I love you,” said Blaine.
“Yeah,” said Kurt sadly. “You do deserve me Blaine, you’re always kind and helpful, and like I said you saved me, you really did.”
“Even after what I did you still think I deserve you?”
“Why else would I give you a second chance Blaine?” Kurt said giving Blaine's hand a small shake.
“Hey Kurt,” said Mercedes as she sat down. “How are you today?”
“Alright I guess,” Kurt was getting sick of these constant questions, how did they all think he’d be feeling, his mom had died 10 years ago today, Blaine seemed to notice.
“Hey, guys how about we talk about something different for a while?” said Blaine quietly
“Okay? Wait- why, are you- Kurt?”
“Yes Blaine and I are back together, we had a calm discussion and I realised that I was quick to jump the gun, so we’re starting again”
“Congratulations guys” Mercedes trilled.
The rest of the day was a bit of a blur for Kurt, full of sad looks from his class mates, being spoken to in what kurt deemed ‘the pity voice’. It rarely helped, it just made him pissed off at the people who used it, and more upset that his mother was gone.
~~~
“Hey, Blaine” said Kurt quietly over lunch “Would you, erm, please maybe come with me this afternoon, I mean, I’m going to be trying to keep my dad together, and today has taken a lot out of me and I just… I’d like it for you to be there with me.”
“Are you sure your dad won’t mind? It’s your special family thing.”
“Well if you don’t want to Blaine” Kurt snapped, he didn’t mean to, he was in a pretty hormonal mood; he could snap at any point, he could break down.
“No, no, Kurt I’d love too. He doesn’t hate me then, you know for what I did?”
“No, he’s missed you, he told me last night, could we stop talking about ‘what you did’ Blaine, please? Yes you did something bad, but I’m trying to forgive you for it. Okay?” said Kurt, really wishing that Blaine would drop the whole thing it was making it harder for Kurt to try to forgive him for it.
“Okay and okay I’ll come”
“Thank you, I love you” said Kurt taking Blaine's hand and slowly bring it to his lips to kiss gently, Blaine blushed slightly.
~~~
“Hey, Dad, it’s okay for Blaine to tag along, right?” asked Kurt as he and Blaine climbed in to the car.
“Sure Kiddo” said Burt, his eyes red and puffy.
The drive to the cemetery was silent save for the faint sound of the Evita soundtrack coming out of the radio speakers; it was Kurt’s mom’s favourite Broadway musical.
When they arrived at the cemetery, the trio made their way to the white marble headstone, but laid a small wreath of white roses on the grave. They all bowed their heads.
“Can I just have a few more minutes Dad? You guys could go wait in the car, and I just want to talk to her alone for a moment”
“Kurt, are yo-”
“Yes, Blaine I’ll be fine.” Kurt cut in.
Kurt watched as his dad and his boyfriend made their way back to the car.
“Hey mom,” said Kurt “Well, I have no doubts that you know about what Blaine did, maybe could you give me the strength to be able to forgive him, or just push me in the right direction,” tears started to pour down his face “I really miss you mom, I wish you were here and that you could give me advice. Love you.”
Kurt rose, quickly dried his tears and walked back to the car, he climbed in to the back seat, and Blaine shuffled over and wrapped his arm around Kurt allowing him to cry into his shoulder.
“Breadstix for dinner, boys?” Burt asked.
They nodded.
~~~
Dinner was nice, quiet and simple. Not much really happened: they sat and talked about school and glee; Blaine and Burt talked about the recent Buckeyes game; and they just basically talked about everything except the one main thing that was on their minds: Elizabeth. Kurt was thankful. He didn’t want to do anymore talking about her for a long while; this day always tired him out.
