Kurt had been nervous about his meeting with Blaine… he kept half waiting for Blaine to say he couldn’t make it… he never expected he’d be the one to cancel… especially not for that.
Kurt was sat in French class staring at dust specks and daydreaming about meeting Blaine tonight, He’d always excelled in French, when Mr Schuster and Miss Pillsberry, came to pull him out of class.
“What wrong?” asked Kurt slightly worried.
“Kurt, it’s your dad he’s in hospital… he had a heart attack at work” said Miss Pillsberry slowly.
“What? Is he okay?” asked Kurt panicking.
“We don’t know yet, Kurt would you like me to drive you to the hospital?” asked Mr Schue
Kurt lent against the lockers and sunk to the floor, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. The tears began to fall, his dad meant everything too him he couldn’t lose him.
“I could drive mysel-” said Kurt
“Kurt you are in no condition to drive, let me take you okay” said Mr Schue
“Okay” he replied getting to his feet and allowing his teacher to direct him to his car.
He couldn’t meet Blaine tonight; he needed to be with his dad, so he tapped a quick text to Blaine
Blaine, I’m really sorry but I can’t meet you today, something’s come up… I’ll call you later… I’ll explain promise -K
Kurt, okay, its fine… sorry to hear about whatever it is, we’ll rearrange for some other time? -B
Yes definitely I need to meet you, you are my best friend… it kinda weird I haven’t seen you in 9 years ;) - K
Okay, I’ll talk to you later, Murdoch will kill me if he catches me texting in class again ;) -B
Kurt felt a little better after to talking to Blaine; at least he could look forward to the phone call he loved talking to Blaine. They had just pulled up outside the hospital.
Kurt was sat at on a hospital bench waiting for news on his dad’s condition, nervously sipping coffee when the doctor arrived.
“Is he okay? Is he still alive?” asked Kurt
“He’s stable, but he’s in a coma, there’s no knowing how bad the damage to his brain is until he wakes up?” she said.
“When will that be?”
“I’m sorry we don’t know yet”
“Can I go see him please?”
“Kurt” said Mr Schue, placing a hand on Kurt’s shoulder. “I’m not sure if that’s a good idea”
“Just let me go see my father please!” Kurt snapped
Mr Schue stepped back and allowed Kurt to follow the doctor down the corridor to his dad’s room. Burt’s room was white sterile and quiet save for the steady beat of the heart monitor… beep… beep… beep.
“Dad, if you can hear me squeeze my hand, I’m holding yours right now just please squeeze it…please” said Kurt through a sea of tears, he sat down in the chair and began to sob.

Kurt couldn’t sleep that night, he was staying at Carole and Finn’s, Carole didn’t think it was a good idea for Kurt to be left alone, and then he remembered his promise to Blaine and quickly called him, he didn’t expect him to pick up it was 11:45 pm….
“Hello” came Blaine’s voice through the speaker in Kurt’s phone.
“Hi Blaine, I’m really sorry about the coffee, I was really looking forward to it, but in French class today school got a call and it was about my dad, he had a heart attack… he’s in hospital at the moment… I’m really sorry”
There was a moment silence.
“Oh, I’m sorry Kurt, I knew you wouldn’t cancel unless it was important, don’t worry about it… is he okay?”
“We don’t know he’s in a coma at the moment, he’s stable but be can’t assess the damage to his brain from the lack of oxygen… Blaine, I’m really scared… this may seem a silly request and it is a bit late but would you sing ‘Not Alone’ to me again… it made me feel better when you first sang it…”
“Of course just give me a few minutes to go down to the commons, Cooper, Nick and Jeff are sleeping.”
“Nick and Jeff?” asked Kurt curiously
“Nick and Jeff are my roommates… they’re completely bonkers but I love ‘em, you’d like them… they’d like to see you again they thought you seemed nice when we sung for your mother’s funeral…” Kurt heard Blaine chuckle, Kurt loved that chuckle.
“Oh which ones were they then?”
“The dark haired boy stood next to the tall Blonde with a bieber cut… you know before he ruined it was kinda cool” Blaine laughed.
“Oh yeah I remember… their parents came to the wake afterwards… they spent the whole time under the dessert table”
Blaine chuckled… Kurt loved it when Blaine laughed “Oh yeah that sound like them. Okay… I’m in the commons, would you like it to have musical accompaniment or just my vocals… there’s a piano in here, Lots of warblers dorm in this building so we convinced them to put a piano in”
“Either’s fine…Thank you for this Blaine”
“Its fine” said Blaine as he played the first few chords on the piano, and the song began to stream from his mouth down the phone to Kurt.
Kurt had a death grip on his phone, like it was his life line the only thing that kept him sane, like if he let go he’d drift off in to oblivion. Blaine played the last few chords and the song ended.
“Thank you Blaine, Thank you for everything”
“You’re welcome Kurt… I’m here if you need… want to talk okay, you don’t have to go through this alone”
“Thank You Blaine, maybe could we meet on Saturday? I feel bad about having to cancel today.”
“Yeah Saturday is fine but no need to feel bad Kurt, I understand fully your dad means a lot to you”
“Okay well thank you again night, night Blaine”
“Night, night Kurt sweet dreams”
Then Kurt hung up, he slept well that night despite the distressing day, something about talking to Blaine soothed him, it always made him feel better, happier… Blaine always knew the right things to say.

Throughout that week the Glee Club had been singing songs to Kurt to show that they are there for him. Most of them were spiritual, Kurt didn’t believe in god.
He visited his dad every night, he occasionally would sing to him or read but mainly he just sat in silence and completed his homework assignments.
