Author's Notes: Triggers: Parental Death, Implications of Suicide

Blaine Theodore Anderson was 6 when his parents died in a car crash after a trip to the theatre… he was devastated, his parents had left enough money to them to have him and his older brother, Cooper, enrolled in Dalton Academy Pre to High School …he refused to talk about any of it, the only time he’d let his emotions out was when he was singing. One day when he was 8 years old his choir was singing at a funeral, this was the day his life changed…

Tuesday 19th April 2000

The rain had finally subsided when the official funeral service for Elizabeth Katherine Hummel had ended and the congregation moved out in to the graveyard for the lowering of her casket, Blaine was stood talking to his two best friends Nick and Jeff as the crowd thickened, there was a smallish boy around Blaine’s age, holding his composure whilst gripping his dads hand. Blaine thought that the boy had really nice eyes from a distance anyway. He must have been the son that Elizabeth’s widow talked about. Blaine moved forward and began to sing; not taking his eyes of the chestnut haired boy stood a few meters away.

Oh yeah, I'll tell you something
I think you'll understand.
When I say that something
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand

Blaine kept staring straight at the little boy, like he wanted him to know that he was there if he needed to talk, that this song was for him, even though he didn’t know the boy he felt like he wanted to get to know him… like this boy was meant to be in his life.

Oh, please, say to me
You'll let me be your man
and please, say to me

You'll let me hold your hand
Now let me hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand

And when I touch you I feel happy, inside
It's such a feeling
That my love
I can't hide
I can't hide
I can't hide

Yeah you, got that something
I think you'll understand
When I say that something
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand

And when I touch you I feel happy, inside
It's such a feeling
That my love
I can't hide
I can't hide
I can't hide

Yeah you, got that something
I think you'll understand
When I say that something
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your ha-a-a-a-a-a-and

When the casket was lowered in to the grave Blaine bowed his head taking his eyes of the other boy for a second when he looked up, he had fled Blaine caught a glimpse of his suit jacket running in to the trees so he followed him, he had a gut feeling that this boy needed him.

He searched the trees until he heard sniffling coming from under a willow tree, it was a perfect hiding place… no one could see him, no-one could see his ‘big boy’ façade fall down and crumble.

“Hi” said Blaine, slightly nervous he didn’t want to intrude.

“Hello” said the small boy, looking up to meet Blaine eyes, his eyes were even prettier up close “Can I help you?”

“Well it just seemed you were rather upset and I thought that maybe you’d like someone to talk to… or a least some tissues so you don’t ruin that lovely suit” He said pulling Kurt’s arm away from his nose.

After receiving a puzzling look from the other boy Blaine decided to leave, he thought Kurt just wanted to be left alone.

“I’ll just put these here, just in case you want them” said Blaine laying the tissues on the ground and making to leave

Just as he turned away the other boy said “Wait…please don’t go, my name is Kurt”

“Hi, I’m Blaine!” extending a slightly grubby hand, smiling.

They sat in silence for a while; it wasn’t strained, awkward or uncomfortable. Blaine was just waiting for Kurt to be ready to talk… he’d wait forever for Kurt he thought

“I miss her,” said Kurt after a while. “I miss her loads… I miss her singing me to sleep”

“She sounds like a nice mom” said Blaine, Blaine’s mom was nothing like Kurt’s, she’d never really had the time for Blaine and Cooper… neither of them had “Is there anything else you miss?”

“I miss her perfume and the way she’d teach me piano after school… and-and” sobbed Kurt “I miss doing little concerts for my dad after our Friday night dinners, we’d sing and play piano…”

Poor Kurt, Blaine thought. Luckily for Blaine he hadn’t remembered much about his parents, they had always been busy to spend any real time him and Cooper.

Kurt had completely dissolved into tears. Blaine crawled around probably getting mud all over his freshly pressed grey trousers and the hem of his crisp blue blazer… but this boy needed comfort anyway dirt wasn’t anything the dorm matron couldn’t clean, he put an arm around the boy allowing him to cry in to his blazer, this one needed washing anyway.

“Kurt? Kurt where are you?” he heard Kurt’s dad call.

Kurt quickly brushed away his tears and blew his nose. Blaine fished in his pockets for a pen then on an unused tissue he scribbled his e-mail address, Cooper wouldn’t allow him to have a cell phone until he was 17 and the school one was for emergencies only.

“Here you go Kurt if you ever need to talk just e-mail me okay… its best to talk these things out… I know. Both my parents died… now I stay at Dalton with my older brother.” said Blaine, he smiled and he manoeuvred Kurt out from under the tree to his dad.

“Oh there you are kiddo, who’s this? Oh wait; you’re the kid who sang.”

“Yes, I’m sorry for you loss Mr Hummel. I saw Kurt run over here and I thought I check on him” said Blaine, he was slightly intimidated, and despite the tear tracks down his face Kurt's dad was very scary.

“Well thanks err…”

“Blaine.” he said holding out his hand.

“Thanks Blaine, the song was really lovely” smiled Burt as he took Kurt's hand and walked him to the car. “It was one of Lizzie’s favourites”

Blaine was hoping for an e-mail from Kurt that night, but it never came… he waited for weeks he began to worry about him, maybe he’d just forgotten, maybe he just didn’t want to talk to Blaine the latter made Blaine feel sad, he liked Kurt and he really wanted to be his friend.
