It was 11:30 on Sunday morning when Kurt woke up to a loud oof and some mumbled cursing. Kurt rolled over to his side slowly, feeling that pounding headache he knew he'd feel. As he opened his eyes, he noticed a tall figure a few feet away from his bed, bending over and clutching at his foot. "Damnit! Son of a…" It registered to Kurt that Finn had banged his foot on something, which was usual. Finn didn't have the best coordination when it came to anything, let alone walking. Kurt drew his covers back and painstakingly sat up. "What did you bang this time?"
Finn released his foot from his hands and turned to Kurt in one solid move. "Foot and your dresser." Kurt squinted, wondering why Finn was anywhere near his dresser. Finn sensed his brother's confusion and pointed over to the dresser. Next to Kurt's phone laid 2 small, white pills and a bottle of Evian. "I thought you might need those." Kurt did nothing but smile at Finn's thoughtful gesture. It still amazed Kurt how good of a brother, how protective Finn became soon after Carole and Burt married. After last year's debacle of Finn throwing out the word faggy in the Hummel house, he never thought things between him and Finn would ever get this good.
He was glad though; if Kurt hadn't felt so hung-over he would have jumped out of bed and given Finn a thank you hug. However, Kurt was incapable of strenuous activity so he reached out for the 2 pills, popped them in this mouth and chased them down with the water. "Thanks for looking out for me." Finn lightly shrugged, placing his hands in the pocket of his jeans. It was clear he was awake before Kurt, so he was already dressed for the day. "What are brothers for?" Finn turned back around and out the door, leaving Kurt to finish waking up.
Kurt didn't waste any time getting dressed or moving from where he was, then again he didn't think it was possible. He reached over for his phone and called Blaine like he planned to. Sighing into the phone, he tried to mentally prepare for this conversation. He soon realized he didn't have much time to prepare when Blaine picked up on only the second ring.
"Blaineybear speaking." Blaine lightly laughed into the phone, he thought if he made light of what happened last night, Kurt wouldn't beat himself up over last night. "Oh god." Kurt bit down on his bottom lip, trying to keep his jaw from falling to the floor. If he ever had the chance to give Blaine a cute nickname, it was all over now. "Blaineybear?" He knew this conversation was going to be tough, let alone mortifying. "Don't worry. I think it's quite endearing, adorable actually."
The nickname was anything but endearing or adorable so Kurt scoffed. "So you don't fully hate me?" Kurt slowly slid back down on his bed. Using one hand, he grabbed his blanket and threw it over his head. This was the closest thing Kurt was getting next to crawling under a rock. He let his covers engulf him, cocooning himself under the blanket. "One time you drunk dial me isn't going to get me to hate you, Kurt. It's going to take a lot more to drive me away." Kurt heard the sincerity in Blaine's voice at that moment and felt a bit better. Okay, so Blaine didn't hate him. This was a very good thing.
"I shouldn't have called you that late. I was really annoying, wasn't I?" Even if Blaine didn't hate him, Kurt felt like a menace for calling Blaine so late. "Annoying was the last thing you were. You were…" Blaine then paused, Kurt anticipating his next words. "You said some interesting things." This sparked Kurt's interest.
"Oh? And what was so interesting that I said?" Kurt brought up his thumb to his lips and bit down on his nail. Biting his nails was a disgusting habit that Kurt tried to stay away from as often as possible but right now, this was a nail-biting situation. "Are you sure you want to know, Kurt? I mean we can just forget this ever happened." Kurt heard Blaine's doubtfulness in his voice. He felt his face burning up in an instant; he definitely said some embarrassing things to Blaine.
Kurt took a long deep breath in and let it out into the phone. He let out a low, raspy "Yes" before Blaine began to spoke. "You were intoxicated, obviously. When we first started talking you were kind of whining, asking me to come and lay down with you, saying you missed me." Blaine stopped talking and listened carefully for any response from Kurt, but got nothing. "Then uh," All of a sudden, Blaine found it hard to get the next few words out. "You said you'd try not to kiss me, but couldn't promise it." Kurt's heart plummeted into his lower stomach. If he thought mortified described how he felt, he was surely mistaken. Kurt had never been so embarrassed in his life.
"Jeremiah was brought up too, and how you thought he was stupid for rejecting after I sang to him. You also mentioned something about me being sweet and gorgeous." Kurt heard Blaine laugh at the end of finishing that last sentence. It wasn't the time for Blaine to be cocky. But on the other hand Kurt knew he was attractive and Blaine knew he was attractive, so there was really no way to justify Blaine's cockiness. "There was one part though," Blaine's tone of voice changed slightly but Kurt couldn't pick up on what it was. "You sounded like you were about to cry when you told me I didn't like you."
Kurt couldn't keep his composure any longer. He stopped biting his nail and licked his lips. His throat felt unpleasantly dry but he spoke anyway. "I didn't mean to ruin… I'm sorry, Blaine." On top of feeling embarrassed, Kurt felt like he had ruined everything between Blaine and him. But who was he kidding; there wasn't anything between him and Blaine. Kurt liked Blaine more than a friend, even Blaine knew it. However, Blaine didn't know how serious Kurt felt until last night.
There was silence for a while over the phone. Kurt recognized this as an awkward silence and began to panic. "I should go." Blaine quickly objected to Kurt's surprise. "No!" So Kurt obeyed Blaine's wishes and didn't hang up. He didn't want the awkward silence to take over this conversation again. "How come you didn't say anything before?" Kurt realized how serious this conversation was about to get and drew his covers back off of him to sit up. He was going to tell Blaine everything now, there was no turning back.
"How did you expect me to say anything? This doesn't really fit into everyday small talk, Blaine." Kurt shrugged, feeling helpless. If he was lucky, maybe things would work out in the end and they'd stay friends. But right now, he had to come out and face his fears. Everything was already out in the open from last night. Here I go. Kurt sighed and began to speak. "You want to grab coffee after class, I'd rather taste your lips but coffee's good too. Great job at rehearsals, your smile makes me weak in the knees. Of course I'll help you serenade the boy you're madly in love with at the GAP, but I wish it was me you were serenading?"
Blaine was left speechless. It was weird when Kurt was drunk and telling him this. Kurt being sober and confessing his feelings had a different effect on Blaine. This was really happening now and Blaine just felt terrible about it. He should've never informed Kurt on what he said. "Okay. I get it."
"I'm not going to say it's been easy, because it's been anything but. It's hard falling for your best friend and watching him fall for someone else that isn't you." Kurt's heard his voice become shaky with sadness. He never liked someone so much before. His crush on Finn didn't even come close to what he felt for Blaine. "But I still participated in the GAP Attack because I knew how important it was to you to sing to Jeremiah. And I do think he's stupid for rejecting you after you did all that for him, but it's his loss." In that moment Kurt felt empowered, letting everything out like this. It was if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. "Any guy would be lucky enough to be yours, Blaine."
"You really mean that, Kurt?" If it wasn't for the splitting headache, Kurt would've banged his head against his dresser. Was Blaine being serious? What that an accurate question? Of course meant what he said. "Without a doubt.
"You never fail to make me smile." Blaine oddly sounded whimsical. Did he really make Blaine smiled? He guessed he liked the sound of that. "That's what I'm here for." His lips managed to curl up into a smile. Yes, he definitely liked the sound of making Blaine smile.
"So what are you doing tomorrow?" Blaine's question caught Kurt off guard. How could Blaine easily go from such a serious conversation to a random question like that? "Tomorrow? Tomorrow's Monday, so hopefully I'll be at school hangover free." Kurt laughed a bit, trying to make a joke out of his drunken mishap. "I have a proposition for you, Kurt Hummel."
"A proposition, and what may that be, Mr. Anderson? Intrigued, Kurt decided to play along. He really didn't have anything to lose. Kurt and Blaine's friendship remained strong. Maybe this talk could make their friendship grow stronger? "My flight lands at 2 tomorrow, and I'll probably be unpacking and getting everything settled afterwards, but do you want to do something tomorrow night, around 8?"
What kind of proposition is that? Kurt and Blaine and hung usually every night, so Kurt didn't see this as anything out of the ordinary. "Blaine, we hang out pretty much every day. Why would I not want to do something?" Blaine rolled his eyes, Kurt not getting what Blaine was getting at. "Good. It's a date." OH! Wait, what? Kurt's eyes lit up and flickered. "A date?" His whole body stiffened with nervousness. Was Blaine asking Kurt out, on a real date? "Yes, dummy. It's a date. I'm asking you out on a date." Blaine sounded so nonchalant it amazed Kurt. This couldn't be happening. Was this some parallel drunken universe? "Oh…" Kurt tried not to stammer in awe but ultimately failed. "A date, yeah. At 8? Sounds good to me." Kurt was still convinced he was dreaming. "Perfect. I'll call you tomorrow. Talk to you later, Kurt." And that was it. Blaine hung up the phone and Kurt was stuck, frozen, phone still to his ear and everything. Blaine Anderson just asked Kurt Hummel out on a date.
