They ran faster than Kurt thought possible, dodging trees and jumping over bushes, the loud buzzing drone of the enemy planes growing louder with each step. When the camp was just in sight, they heard the ear-blasting whine of the air raid siren begin.
Blaine, his face set and grim, pulled Kurt back as they were about to burst into the meadow surrounding the base's airfield. He crouched at the treeline, pulling Kurt down to safety next to him, just as the first enemy planes flew over them, their guns already firing.
Blaine watched the camp intently, the men boiling from barracks and buildings, sprinting towards their palnes.
“Kurt, we are going to run now.” Blaine looked seriously into Kurt's eyes. “I need you right behind me – you do everything I do, okay?”
Kurt was trembling – desperately trying to keep his panic from showing. He never knew airplanes could be so loud, or even that gunfire would make your ears go deaf. He swore he was feeling the noises in his bones.
Blaine took his cold, shaking hands in his own – Blaine's hands were calm and steady and warm.
“Okay, baby?” Blaine's voice softened, a smile touching his eyes. “I need you with me.”
Heartened, Kurt swallowed hard, and nodded.
“I'm going to get you to HQ – that's the safest place – and then I'm going to have to get The Dream off the ground before she gets hit.” Blaine's voice was steady, with a note of command in it Kurt had never heard before.
I'd follow him anywhere – it doesn't matter where, Kurt thought as he nodded again.
“But we have to get you there before the bombers arrive – this is more than one squadron of fighters out there, their bombers won't be too far behind.”
Kurt nodded frantically, eyes wide.
“Are you ready to run?” Blaine was still looking intently at Kurt, though his body was quivering with adrenaline.
“Wait,” Kurt surged forward for one last passionate kiss, capturing Blaine's lips with his own.
“I love you,” Blaine breathed into his mouth.
“I love you, too.”
“Ready?”
Kurt nodded.
“You stay right behind me, okay, baby?”
At Kurt's nod, Blaine grabbed his hand. They stood and broke cover. They ran like hell, bullets flying all around them.
