"We have to win this!" Puck exclaimed. They were having an evening jam session in the auditorium, but it had quickly turned into a discussion about the film music project.
"I don't think this is a competition," Jeff interjected, but they all knew that whatever the teachers said all the students would treat it as one.
"It is annoying; they seem to think we're idiots. Most of them won't even take the time to get to know us before making up their minds," Sam sighed. Blaine knew that Sam had a very good reason for being annoyed. He had caught him looking longingly after a girl that he thought was called Mercedes; he knew she sang opera because he had heard her, and her voice had blown him away.
"That Kurt guy screamed at me today because I didn't want to hold his hand," Finn whined and Blaine shook his head.
"Finn, that's unfair. I was there and I heard what you said. Most gay guys react to the word 'fag'. It's derogative and not cool."
Finn seemed to get what he was saying.
"Ok, but he still screamed. He screamed at you too, and you did nothing."
"Frankenteen, for once this might agree with you. That guy is a class A bitch, and I should know, I was raised on insults." Santana reached over and patted Blaine on the cheek, "And if he is ever mean to you Tiny, I will go all South- side on his ass."
"You know, maybe we should get back to the project?" Blaine suggested, not wanting to start an argument with Santana over how he was perfectly capable of taking care of himself.
"I think we should do Tchaikovsky."
The others turned to Sam, looking like they had just heard a pig talk. Blaine smiled to himself.
"My little sister is always twirling around to this CD my mum has, and last Christmas she made me sit through that whole movie, Blaine what was it?"
"The Nutcracker."
Puck winced. "That sounds painful."
Santana gave him a smack on the head "It has nothing to do with your balls, you idiot."
"Why this Tha.. Thciv... dude?" Finn asked.
"Because that is exactly the opposite of what they think we'll do. The assignment was to give it our own spin, so Blaine here can make an arrangement so that we can play it on our guitars. It'll be awesome." Sam was gesticulating excitedly as he talked.
It was a good idea. Actually, it was a great idea. The more Blaine thought about it the more excited he got about the idea.
"So Blainers, will you do it?" Santana asked.
"Of course he will," Sam replied, "just look at that smile."
"We need more people." Blaine said as he dumped down next to the gang at lunch the next day. Their faces looked like question marks, so he elaborated.
"For the project, we need more people. I've spent last night and this morning putting something together, but if we are to get the sound I want we need more instruments."
Puck made a gesture telling him to go on.
"I'm thinking four guitars, a bass guitar, drums, piano, at least one violin and a cello. I can take either the piano or the violin since there are enough of us that can play guitar, but I can't do both. So we need to get more people."
"So, that's me, Sam and Puck on guitar and Finn on drums." Jeff was ticking them off on his fingers. "What about Santana?"
"What about me Blondie," Santana said, showing up at their table.
Jeff went bright red and started spluttering.
"What do you play? Except guys' heartstrings, that is?" Blaine asked.
"That is to cheesy even for you Anderson, and for your information I can play the cello."
That caused a full minute of stunned silence.
"What the fuck, you're a classics?" Puck blurted out.
"So what if I am, Blaine is one too," Santana said defiantly. The guys turned their attention to Blaine who just shrugged. The table fell silent again.
"That wheelchair kid is a pretty good on his bass, I could ask him." Sam volunteered after a while.
"That's great Sam. I have an idea about who to ask about the violin part, and if I do a few tweaks we can do it with three guitars," Blaine said. He was grateful his friend was there because the tension around the table was pretty high.
"Dude, you really got in here on a classics place?" Finn asked in disbelief.
"Lay off Blaine, all of you. Yes he can play piano and that violin like a pro, but he can also play riffs that neither of you can, and he writes the most awesome songs. He's even mphf..."
Blaine tackled Sam mid tirade, both of them sliding off the bench and on to the floor. He knew what Sam was about to say and he really didn't want his friends to know all of his secrets. He was pretty sure that Puck gossiped like an old lady and Finn would probably tell anyone who asked before remembering that he was supposed to keep his mouth shut. Not that Sam was any better.
He grappled with Sam for a while before one of the cafeteria ladies came over and told them to leave. Both boys were trying hard to look properly rebuked, but having trouble keeping their laughter at bay.
Later that day after finishing his violin lesson, Blaine found the kid he was looking for sitting alone under a tree on the grounds. The boy seemed to be alone most of the time, which is why he had thought of him in the first place. He studied the boy for a moment before approaching him slowly.
"Hi, my name is Blaine. You're Trent, right?"
The boy's round face shot up to look at Blaine in surprise. He opened his mouth to say something, but Blaine beat him to it.
"Look, I know we're not supposed to talk, but personally I think the whole feuding fractions is a bit childish, and I think you do too." The boy nodded and Blaine let himself sink down on the ground, crossing his legs and placing his violin case gently on the grass. He saw Trent's eyes flicker to the case and before he met Blaine's eyes.
"You play the violin?" he asked and Blaine smiled because he knew that he had breached the first wall and that his plan might work.
"Yeah, I have lessons with Mr. Moto as well. I asked him if he knew of someone that would be good enough to play in this arrangement I am putting together and he told me to talk to you."
Trent actually blushed at the second hand praise, making Blaine grin. "So do you think you'd want to? We are rehearsing later, after dinner."
Trent's eyes widened, "Is this part of the project?" he asked with something like trepidation in his voice.
Blaine nodded.
"Uhm, I'd love to, but Sebastian will kill me if I help the enemy." Trent looked down on his hands.
"Why do you care what this Sebastian guy thinks? Is he like your best friend? Boyfriend?" Blaine asked, he knew he was going out on a limb with the boyfriend comment but he was pretty sure Trent was gay.
"No, no, he's just my roommate. I...I don't have a boyfriend," Trent spluttered. "He is kind of an asshole to tell you the truth," he whispered.
Blaine laughed. "I am so sorry for your predicament. I guess roommate can be worse than both best friend and boyfriend since you are stuck with each other for the rest of the summer."
Trent was smiling now. "Yes! Plus he is heading the project amongst the classical students, he's hell bent on showing you guys just how inferior you are, oops..." Trent clapped a hand over his mouth, "I didn't mean that. That's just Sebastian talking; I think you're pretty great." He was blushing again now. "Not that I am stalking you or anything, I just heard you because you have your piano lesson when I finish my lesson with Mr. Moto, so I listened at the door sometimes. God that sounds really creepy."
Blaine reached out and put his hand on the other boy's shoulder. "Trent, relax. I listen at doors all the time. Sometimes I even press my ear to the wall."
They both laughed and the mood relaxed.
"Listen Trent, I don't wish to make trouble for you, but I want your skills."
Trent blushed again and Blaine suddenly realised what he had said.
"Uhm, on the violin, I meant on the violin. Can't you at least think about it and let me know. I really want you."
Trent looked like he wanted to say something but his face fell towards the end of Blaine's speech.
"That is quite an offer Trent, I don't think you will get anyone else here to throw themselves at you like that," a voice said behind Blaine.
Turning his body to see who had spoken, Blaine saw a tall, skinny guy with brown hair looking down on him. Getting up to his feet he caught Trent murmuring something about 'asshole' so he guessed who it was before the teen extended his hand.
"Sebastian Smythe."
"Blaine Anderson."
They shook and Sebastian seemed to study Blaine for a moment.
"You know, you could do so much better than pudgy Trent. You're hot, for the scruffy rocker type."
Blaine almost snatched his hand back, 'who was this guy?'
"I have to go. My friends are waiting for me. Trent, I hope I see you later." He bent down to retrieve his violin case, feeling Sebastian's gaze on him. It felt kind of creepy, having a guy so blatantly checking him out.
"Bye Blaine." Trent said timidly. "Yeah, bye Blaine," Sebastian echoed wearing a lecherous smile.
"Uhm bye guys." Blaine said and hurried off towards the dorms thoroughly creeped out.
Comments
Hi, I have just found this story and am really enjoying it. Although English is not your first language, it does not show through your writing at all. There have been a few gramatical errors for example where you wrote about the first 'face' of the operation, it is written 'phase'. Other than small things like that, you are doing a brilliant job! I am looking forward to reading more and hoping to see the M warning come into existence :-)
Thank you for your feedback. I guess that is what you get for putting up an unedited story. I do know it is written phase, it's just hard to see your own spelling mistakes even if you look over the piece several times. I appreciate it.Haha, waiting for the M warning, yeah, me too...
