Breakfast was the most important meal of the day, at least it was if you were a growing teenage boy with the initials B.A.
Blaine pushed his third piece of toast into his mouth, knowing that he was eating like a slob and secretly loving the fact that there were no parents, or in his case housekeeper, there to chastise him for his lack of manners. He took a huge gulp of apple juice and then started peeling his banana when he saw Trent sitting by himself at one of the small corner tables in the cafeteria. The boy's head hung and he looked so dejected that Blaine simply had to go over there. Gathering up his stuff, he threw away his trash and made his way over to Trent.
"Hi Trent, how're you holding up?" Blaine said as he dumped down in the seat across from the other boy. His smile slipped off his face when Trent looked up at him, his cheeks tear stained and eyes red.
"What's wrong?" Blaine asked and reached out to grab hold of the hand lying limply on the table.
"I... I'm going home," Trent sniffed, his bottom lip quivering as he tried to withhold the tears.
"What! Why?" Blaine was shocked.
"I just don't want to be here anymore. Seb-Sebastian is so mean to me all the time and I-I can't take it anymore."
A wave of guilt swept over Blaine. He knew that if he hadn't pushed Trent to join his group he wouldn't be having these problems, on the other hand he had trouble believing somebody making such a big deal over something as insignificant as a summer project.
"Trent, I'm sorry. I feel like this is my fault. Let me help you fix this, you shouldn't feel like you're being chased away because of one asshole. You have plenty of friends here and we'll try and find a solution okay?"
Trent glanced up at him and gave him a hesitant smile.
"Lets go talk to the Dean and see if he can't find you another room." Blaine said and got up, dragging Trent out of the cafeteria by the hand.
It turned out that things weren't that simple. Blaine sat in the Dean's office getting more frustrated by the second.
"I'm sorry Mr. Anderson, Mr. Nixon but I have no available beds in the dorms, and putting Mr. Nixon in with you and Mr. Evans would be in violation with the fire code and safety regulations so I'm sorry I cannot allow that."
Blaine knew he was getting angry and he tried to keep his temper under control as he spoke to the old man.
"But, he is being bullied by his roommate to such an extent that he wants to go home. Surely that isn't the kind of thing you want to be associated with."
The Dean ran his hands through his grey thinning hair.
"Mr. Anderson, I understand that you are upset, but you need to calm down. I will speak to Mr. Smythe now that the situation has come to my attention and we will sort this out. Now, I understand Mr. Nixon's uncertainties, but I am sure we can sort this mess out. Now, if you boys will excuse me..."
And with that they found themselves out in the hallway again.
"What are you thinking?" Blaine asked Trent as they walked together towards the staircase.
"I don't know... I guess I should give it another go? I don't trust Sebastian though. What is to say that he won't keep it up where no one can see? I am sick of locking my stuff up because he will write "pussyboy" or "traitor" on my underwear in biro. I..."
"Wait, what? He did that, why didn't you tell the Dean that while we spoke to him?"
Trent blushed.
"I was embarrassed. Also I tried to wash them, but it didn't work. What am I going to tell my mum when I get home?"
Blaine thought for a second.
"I get it. I still say save the evidence, but I am not going to dictate what you should do. Maybe some of the girls have some sort of stain remover or something?"
The two friends made their way back to the dorms, still hand in hand. Blaine was occupied thinking about stain removers and sleeping arrangements. The last thing on his mind was the fact that he was holding hands with another openly gay boy walking across the campus lawn and he didn't register Sebastian's smirk or the hurt look that came into Kurt's eyes when he saw the two of them disappearing into the dorms.
"Kurt!" Blaine ran to catch up with the countertenor. "I've been looking everywhere for you."
"Really?" Kurt deadpanned.
"Yeah, we really need to talk about yesterday, but before we do that, do you have a stain remover stick thingy? This girl named Rachel went into this long rant when I asked her, about clothes and perfectionism, and it was pretty much all about you." Blaine looked at Kurt, impeccably dressed in short sleeved fitted shirt and incredibly cute shorts; he looked like a schoolboy, a very sexy schoolboy.
"Ahem, sure... why do you need a stain remover?" Kurt said, he was looking at Blaine in a funny way. Blaine wasn't sure but he seemed like he was trying to hide something or being passive aggressive.
"Trent needs it..." Blaine didn't get to finish the sentence before Kurt rounded on him.
"You have some nerve coming up to me and asking for stain remover for your boyfriend when you kissed me under twenty-four hours ago. Do you always play around with people's feelings this way?"
Kurt was flushed and his eyes were flashing.
"Hold up, what!" Blaine grabbed hold of Kurt. "First off, you kissed me, secondly, Trent is not my boyfriend. He is my friend and I am helping him out because Sebastian is treating him like shit and it is partially my fault. I don't know where you get your information from Kurt, but you've got to stop jumping to conclusions about people and check your facts before you try and rip their heads off." Blaine let go of Kurt and pushed his curls off his forehead. He didn't know what to think anymore. As he watched, the boy in front of him changed, his stance went from proud and aggressive to shameful as the boy sort of melted in on himself.
"Oh god, I did it again. I am so sorry," Kurt pleaded and he sounded so sad that Blaine couldn't help but feel bad for him.
"Don't worry about it Kurt, nobody's perfect. So you have a temper, that only means that you are a passionate person. I just wish I wasn't on the receiving end so often," he joked. "Come on, let's find that remover thingy."
They walked side by side for a moment in silence.
"So about that kiss..." Blaine said, trying to keep the tone light.
"I'm sorry about that," Kurt said hurriedly, blushing a bit.
"Don't be, I'm not," Blaine said giving the other boy a smile. He looked over at Kurt as they walked into the dorms, it seemed like Kurt was trying to decide whether or not to say something. 'I'll just give him a moment' Blaine thought.
"Wouldyougoonadatewithme?" Kurt blurted out.
"Uh, what?" Blaine asked.
"Would you go on a date with me? An on campus date, since we're not allowed off campus." Kurt was blushing again; he was so adorable when he blushed.
"Sure." Blaine grinned.
"Really! I mean, great. Ehm... how about tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow's fine."
Blaine wasn't a hundred percent sure about this whole date thing, but he figured it couldn't hurt. He thought Kurt was a brilliant musician and of course pretty hot, so getting to know him better seemed to be the best way to move forward. Blaine was pretty sure that underneath all that temper and haughtiness there was an awesome person and he couldn't wait to get to know him.
"So what's up with Trent?" Kurt asked as they made their way down the corridor to his room.
"I don't want to break his confidence," Blaine said hesitantly, "But Sebastian is treating him like shit after he joined my group for the project. It's so bad that he wanted to go home, but I managed to convince him to stay to see if we can fix it. We went to see the Dean, and he said he would talk to Sebastian, but I am not sure if it will work."
Kurt looked shocked.
"That is awful. I know Sebastian can be kind of snarky and mean, but I didn't know he was targeting Trent like that. I can't believe I didn't notice."
Kurt unlocked the door and led the way into the room. Blaine looked around with interest, 'man, this place is tidy'.
Kurt rummaged around in a small bag, pulling out stuff like a sowing kit and a miniature iron before he pulled out the stain remover and handed it to Blaine.
"I... Will you tell Trent that if he wants to talk to someone, that I am here for him. I've experienced a lot of bullying and... well, I know what it's like. So anything I can do."
He looked so serious and Blaine could have sworn he saw tears in his eyes. He took two steps forward and gave Kurt a hug. When he stepped back, it looked like the other boy had composed himself a bit.
"I'd better get this to Trent," Blaine said, gesturing with the stick. He stopped halfway out the door and turned to look at Kurt.
"I like your outfit today. You're always so fashionable."
A brilliant smile spread across Kurt's face and Blaine knew that he had said the right thing and made the boy feel better.
