Kurt can’t really help himself when he brings Blaine up with Puck the next day.

“Is it someone you know?”, he asks, because he knows it was at Dalton Puck spent the week after he had tried to steal that atm.

“Everybody who’s been at Dalton knows who Blaine Anderson is.”, the larger boy says.

“Why?”

Puck looks at him for a moment before he answers. “You know those big guys? Brutes who don’t think, just hit? Who could take you down with one punch?” Kurt nods. “Those are not the ones you should watch out for, not at Dalton.”

Puck falls silent and Kurt can’t stand it, he has to say something. Because honestly, the way Puck looks scares him a bit.

“Don’t tell me the fearless Puckasaurus was afraid in there?”

He hopes his teasing will bring back the normal Puck, the one who isn’t afraid of anything and never misses and opportunity to brag about his badassness. But Puck only looks at him.

“Those are not the ones you should watch out for.”, he repeats. “It’s the one standing behind them, triggering them on.”

Kurt feels how it is starting to get harder to breathe then. It is not like Puck to say something like this, spill something like this out. Especially not to him.

“I wasn’t at Dalton for very long.”, Puck continues. “But I saw a bunch of guys beat the living crap out of a scrawny newcomer. Before the guards could interrupt it was blood everywhere. Blaine Anderson wasn’t even in the room, but everyone knew it was him. He wasn’t just one of those guys who stood behind, triggering the ones with short temper and whispering in their ears who to direct their anger at either. He was their leader. Everyone was afraid of him, even the toughest ones.”

“And… do you know why he’s here? Why he’s at McKinley now?” Kurt tries to sound nonchalant, but isn’t sure he fools his friend.

“No idea.”, Puck answers. “I thought he was at Dalton biding his time until they could send him to a real prison or something.”
