“We’ll get going as soon as Leslie gets here.” Tony said standing at the front of the tour bus.
“Where is she this time?” Kurt turned to ask Emilia, who played Mimi and was Leslie’s best friend among the cast.
“Oh she found her soul mate.” Emilia said dismissively.
“What? That’s fantastic!” Cooper exclaimed.
“It would be but she finds her soul mate in pretty much every place we go.” Kurt told the newest cast member.
“Oh.”
“Sorry I’m late, I was so sure that he was my soul mate.” Leslie said rushing on the bus.
“What happened?” Emilia asked her friend.
“He bats for the other team. Hey! Kurt, maybe he was your soul mate!” Leslie said as she took her seat.
“I doubt it.” Kurt replied.
“You don’t believe in soul mates?” Cooper asked.
“I do, my parents were soul mates but I just don’t know if I have one. What about you?”
“Oh I know they’re real, my little brother has one.”
“That’s nice, how did they meet?”
“They haven’t yet.”
“Then how do you know….?”
“I just do, I think everyone who meets Blaine knows he has a soul mate, he’s just one of those people, you know? Actually, you kind of remind me of him.” Copper said looking at Kurt thoughtfully.
“In what way?” Kurt asked.
“Your both just such passionate and loving people, plus I’ve noticed you have a tendency to just randomly start singing and so does he…honestly, I can’t fully explain it I look at you and I think of him, which is weird because you look nothing alike…want to see a photo?”
“Sure.” Kurt shrugged.
Cooper pulled his phone out of his pocket but noticed the battery was dead. “Damn, I forgot to charge it. I’ll show you his photo another time.”
Kurt shrugged. He honestly didn’t care about seeing a photo of Cooper’s brother, it wasn’t that he didn’t want to see the photo either, it was just he didn’t care about seeing pictures of people he didn’t know. Besides the guy probably looked like a younger version of Cooper and his soul mate was bound to be someone who looked like they belonged in a Disney movie and he was sick and tired of seeing all the beautiful straight soul mates all over the media. Yes, there are gay soul mates but the media didn’t really give them as much attention, partly because homosexuality was still considered a hot button topic but partly because the world wanted to see what the perfect children of these perfect couples would look like. Kurt always found it ironic that the world seemed to deem the children of soul mates to be perfect all while hating him for his sexuality. If the children of soul mate were as perfect as the world thought then shouldn’t the fact he way gay proof there was nothing wrong with it? Somehow when the media discussed the children of soul mates they always left him out, which he was actually quite grateful for as he didn’t want to be famous just because he was born. He wanted to earn his fame on his own, thank you very much. And he was more than fine not being referred to as ‘perfect’ all the time, he has his flaws, just like he is sure that all children of soul mates do. Truthfully, the children of soul mates weren’t any different than the children of non-soul mates. They still got sick, they still gave their parents grief, especially as teenagers, they still made mistakes and bad choices and they still had dreams and wanted to find love the same as everyone else. And yet those in the public eye had the added stress of the world thinking they were perfect and they either had to bust their asses trying to live up to that or they did everything in their power to prove they weren’t.
“What was it like?” Cooper asked breaking through Kurt’s thoughts.
“Hmm?”
“Growing up with parents who are soul mates?”
“Probably not all that different from growing with parents who weren’t, I mean they still fought over bills and what not but at that end of the day I could tell they loved each other, I could see it in their eyes. I remember sneaking into the kitchen to get a cookie after I was supposed to be in bed and finding them slow dancing in the kitchen, not even noticing or caring the music had long stopped.” Kurt smiled warmly at the memory.
“That sounds wonderful. I never saw anything like that between my parents but obviously my parents weren’t soul mates or my dad wouldn’t have left my mom for Blaine’s mom.”
“Is Blaine’s mom your dad’s soul mate then?”
Cooper shook his head. “No. I think they only got married because she got pregnant and I think they began to resent each other after a while.”
“Every couple fights.”
“Not like they do. Nothing physical mind you but they fought about just about everything under the sun. I don’t remember the last time I heard them talk to each civilly.”
“And yet they stayed married?”
“Yeah, well one divorce is considered fine in my dad’s world but two?” Cooper shook his head. “Two is unacceptable.”
“That really sucks.”
“It does and yet they wondered why I hardly ever go home for visits or why Blaine decided to board at Dalton even though he could’ve easily driven back and forth every day.”
“Not every non-soul mate marriage is like that though, my dad and his second wife have a great marriage.”
“Wait, second wife?”
“Uh…yeah… my mom died when I was 8.”
“Fuck. I’m sorry Kurt.”
“Did you say your brother went to Dalton, the Dalton in Westerville?” Kurt asked changing the topic.
Cooper nodded.
“Small world, I’m from Lima.”
“Our parents live in Lima, well actually that’s not true my mom moved to Columbus. But my dad and step-mom live in Lima.”
“Small world.”
“It is, I bet you and Blaine crossed paths thousands of times and didn’t even notice.” Cooper speculated.
“Quite possibly.” Kurt said yawning.
“I’ll let you take a nap, everyone knows how tired these long bus rides makes you.” Cooper said patting Kurt’s knee before getting up and finding an empty seat. When Kurt fell asleep he dreamt of an unknown man with black curls.
