So I had this all written but then I decided I hated half of it so I had to do a major rewrite. But it's like twice as long as the other chapters so that amkes up for the wait right?
Kurt sat at the table in the Lima Bean that in his mind was fast becoming his and Blaine’s looking forward to the day they were both in New York and he could take his soul mate out on a proper date, somewhere classy where they could dress up, somewhere they could hold hands or exchange sweet kisses without worrying about who saw. Kurt was snapped out of his daydream when the bells above the Lima Bean door chimed signalling a new arrival in the coffee shop he looked up and smiled only to be greeted with the sight of the wrong Anderson brother.
“Kurt!” Cooper exclaimed seeing his friend.
“Cooper hi!”
“Mind if I join you? What am I thinking? Of course you don’t, we’re besties.”
Kurt quickly sent Blaine a text under the table letting him know that Cooper was at the Lima Bean and suggesting they meet at Kurt’s house in an hour instead. He sent the text just in time as he saw Blaine walk in front of the window, pause to look at his phone and then turn around and head back to his car.
“I can’t believe we’ve both been in Lima for days and this is the first time we’ve hung out.” Cooper told Kurt.
“Well we’ve both been busy with our families.”
“Speaking of, you should totally come to dinner with mine tonight, it’s my step mom’s birthday.”
“Oh. I would love to but I already have plans.”
“Ok, it’s probably for the best anyway. My little brother is bringing his ‘soul mate’.”
“Hmm.”
“You know part of me was sure you were his soul mate.”
“Did you?”
“Yeah, maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part but I could’ve sworn the two of you were perfect for each other but now he’s found this other guy.”
“Aw such is life.” Kurt said relying on all his acting skills to try and sound dismissive.
“Who knows if this guy really is his soul mate though. I mean they’ve only known each other a couple of days.”
“It’s my understanding that soul mates can tell the second they see each other.”
“True but unless they take the test can they ever truly know if it’s real or just a strong attraction? I mean Blaine has had crushes on so many guys in the past so sure they were his soul mate and sooner or later he realises that they aren’t. How does he know that isn’t the case with this guy?”
“Maybe you need to trust your brother to know his soul mate when he sees him.” Kurt said before grabbing his coat and storming out of the Lima Bean leaving a very confused Cooper is his wake.
Kurt pushed what Cooper said from his mind, the older man didn’t know what he was talking about. He also decided it was best not to mention it to Blaine as he didn’t want to strain the relationship between the two brothers, especially when he was sure that Cooper only had Blaine’s best interest at heart.
“Is it silly I’m kind of bummed we didn’t get our coffee date?” Blaine asked Kurt after they greeted each other at the Hummel house.
“Not at all, I wished I had coffee with you instead of your brother. Cooper’s a good guy and all but he can’t hold a candle to you.”
“Mmm…you’re probably the only person who thinks that.”
“Doubtful. You’re pretty amazing my love.”
“I like that.”
“Hmm?”
“You calling me ‘my love’.”
“How much time do we have before we have to get ready for dinner?”
“Hours.”
“How ever shall we pass the time?”
“I have a few ideas.” Blaine said wiggling his eyebrows before pulling Kurt in for a kiss.
A few hours later they were on their way to the restaurant in Westerville where they would be meeting Blaine’s family.
“I’m nervous.” Kurt said suddenly.
“Understandable. But it’ll be fine. They’ve been waiting for me to meet you for as long as I have. They’ll love you. Just don’t judge me based on them, ok?”
“Of course not.”
“ I apologize in advance for my parents, they normally fight a lot but ever since I pointed that out to them the other day they’ve been…odd.”
“How so?”
“Like they’re trying really hard not to fight which means they either don’t speak to each other for hours on end or they are extra polite. I have a feeling today they’ll be uber polite.”
“Polite is good.”
“Normally it is but with them it’s that fake kind of polite, the kind of polite people are when they are really plotting the other person’s death.”
“I’m sure they aren’t plotting each other’s death.”
“No probably not but it’s still going to be awkward as hell.”
“We’ll get through it, if you want to leave early just squeeze my knee or something and I’ll fake getting sick.”
“You’re the best.”
“I know.” Kurt joked causing Blaine to smile.
They pulled up outside the restaurant where they would be meeting Blaine’s family.
“I know you told me we were going somewhere fancy but holy shit Blaine, I don’t think I can afford this place.”
“You’re not paying dummy, my parents are.”
“I can’t ask them to pay for me.”
“You’re not asking them, they invited you here and you’re my soul mate of course they’re going to pay for you.”
“Ok.”
“Speak of the devils.” Blaine muttered seeing his parents’ car a few spaces over. “They’re going to love you.” He reassured Kurt one more time before giving him a sweet kiss on the cheek. Blaine got out of the car first, Kurt followed him after a few seconds to prevent Cooper from seeing him right away. Cooper had ridden in with his dad and step-mom, partly because it made sense for them to carpool but Blaine suspected it was also partly to ensure Cooper arrived on time. His parents had always instilled in Blaine the importance of arriving on time, arriving too early was rude as your host may not be fully prepared for your arrival they had told Blaine and arriving late made it seem like you didn’t want to be there. As a result Blaine always arrived everywhere exactly on time, even if that meant getting there early and waiting in the parking lot or around the corner until the appropriate time. But the lesson never seemed to stick with Cooper, maybe it was because his own mom wasn’t as uptight about punctuality or maybe it was because Cooper lived in his own little world but either way he always showed up half an hour late. The family had taken to telling Copper things started half an hour earlier than they actually did but somehow he still ended up getting there half an hour late.
“Where’s your young man Blaine?” His mother asked upon seeing him, he looked around and saw that Kurt was lagging behind.
“Oh hey Kurt, you decided to come after all.” Cooper commented upon seeing his friend. “Did I tell you where we were going? I didn’t think I did.”
“No Cooper you didn’t.” Kurt replied as Blaine reached over and took his hand.
“Then how…. OH!” Cooper looked between his brother and friend. Kurt could see the look of concern in Cooper’s eyes and he knew that the older man was playing back their earlier conversation and was more than likely concerned about if Kurt told Blaine what he had said. Kurt shook his head slightly hoping that Cooper would understand not to mention it.
“Why didn’t you tell me when we ran in to each other earlier?”
“We wanted it to be a surprise.” Blaine’s heart jumped at the way Kurt said we.
“I knew you two belonged together.” Cooper said smiling before wrapping his arms around both Kurt and Blaine pulling them into a three way hug. Behind them Blaine and Cooper’s father cleared his throat.
“Oh! Where are my manners? I’m sorry mom, dad this is my soul mate Kurt. Kurt these are my parents Alexander and Dayea Anderson.”
“It’s nice to meet you Mr. and Mrs. Anderson.”
“Please call us Alexander and Dayea, we’re family after all.” Blaine’s mother told Kurt smiling.
“I suppose we are. Happy Birthday Dayea.” Kurt replied handing her the bouquet of flowers he had Blaine help him pick out.
“Thank you dear, now we best be going inside, our reservation was for two minutes ago.”
A few minutes later they were seated at the table and Kurt was scanning the menu uncertainly, he had been planning on ordering the cheapest thing on the menu not wanting to cause Blaine’s parents to spend a lot of money on him but the menu didn’t have any prices listed. Kurt had known it was a fancy/expensive restaurant but he didn’t know it was the kind of place that was so expensive that they didn’t put the prices on the menu. “Seriously, just order whatever you want; don’t worry about the cost, ok?” Blaine whispered in Kurt’s ear before kissing his cheek.
“I think I’ll have the lobster.” Cooper announced louder than necessary.
“So, Kurt what is it that you do?” Alexander asked.
“I’m a student at NYADA but right now I’m playing Angel in RENT.”
“He’s in the same production as me dad.”
“Well now we definitely have to see it.” Dayea gushed.
“Mom.” Blaine said warningly before shooting a glance to Cooper.
“Oh, we had always been planning on seeing it but now we have two reasons.”
“Well I’m sure you’ll love it. Cooper is so good in it.” Kurt told her smiling sweetly as he did.
“I suppose we better go see it soon. When’s you last show Kurt?” Alexander asked taking a sip of the wine that the waiter had brought to the table.
“Umm…I’m not sure the exact date but sometime in August.” Kurt replied wrinkling his forehead in confusion.
“August? Oh. I thought you’d be leaving right after the wedding. You aren’t expecting Blaine to put off Columbia and join you on tour are you?”
“No…I’m sorry but what wedding?”
“Yours and Blaine’s of course.”
“Umm….dad we aren’t getting married. I mean we will eventually but not for a few years.” Blaine said shooting Kurt a look for confirmation.
“I thought most soul mates got married as soon as possible.” Alexander stated.
“Some do but others prefer to wait and get to know each other better before taking that step.” Kurt replied.
“But you’ll have an engagement party of sorts after you do the test won’t you?” Dayea asked.
“Well…I mean we haven’t really talked about it but I was thinking that we don’t really need to take the test. I have no doubt in my mind that Kurt is my soul mate so for me taking the test is completely unnecessary.”
“Not only are we both completely certain that we’re soul mates but we’ve all seen how the paparazzi hound soul mates and neither one of us wants a camera shoved in our faces every time we step outside.” Kurt added.
“You guys haven’t talked about marriage; you haven’t talked about taking the test, what have you talked about?” Alexander asked. “It seems to be you don’t know each other all that well.”
“That’s more than enough.” Blaine said firmly as he set down his fork.
“Blaine, don’t make a scene.” His mother warned.
“I’m not making a scene mom; no one is paying attention to us. But I’ve had more than enough this line of questioning. Of course Kurt isn’t going to quit the production; it’s absolutely ridiculous to assume he would. His dreams are equally important as mine and it would be fantastic if you would show him the same support you would show me. We know that we have a lot to learn about each other and a lot of things to discuss; that’s why we aren’t planning on getting married anytime soon. But doesn’t the fact that we haven’t talked about marriage or taking the test and yet we’re on the same page say something to you?”
“I don’t know what to say.” Alexander replied clearly dumfounded.
“Well dad the way I see it you have two options, you could either apologize to Kurt in which case we can try and salvage this evening or you can say nothing and Kurt and I can leave.”
“I’m sorry Kurt.”
“Thank you.” Kurt replies seemingly to Alexander but squeezing Blaine’s hand as he spoke.
The rest of the dinner went by rather smoothly with relatively little tension for the Anderson family, of course Blaine’s parents still asked Kurt questions but after Blaine’s ultimatum the questions felt less like a judgmental interrogation and more like parents trying to get to know their son’s soul mate.
