Cooper was one of those great big brothers who did whatever he could to make his little brother smile. So when Blaine was five and sick in bed with the flu Cooper racked his brain trying to think of a way to cheer his little brother up until he finally came up with a brilliant plan! He'd make Blaine a sock puppet because who doesn't love sock puppets. Being a 15 year old boy his sewing skills were less than stellar as result the button eyes (one blue, one green) weren't sewed on straight, the nose resembled a pig's snout and the mouth was just plain deformed.
Despite all of that Cooper was rather proud of his work and he thought his father's good dress sock never looked better. Cooper took the sock puppet and ran to Blaine's room only to find the small boy napping. It was then that Cooper came up with an even more brilliant plan: he'd surprise Blaine when he woke up! So he carefully and quietly crept into his little brother's room and hid under his bed. He laid there for what seemed like hours but was probably closer to ten minutes when he heard his little brother moving around on top of the bed signalling to Cooper that he was awake. He thrust his arm out from under the bed placing the sock puppet right by Blaine's newly awake face.
"Hello Blaine." Cooper said in a disguised voice that may have sound slightly demonic, he really should have practiced the voice.
Rather than hearing his brother laughing and squealing in delight he heard him screaming as if someone was trying to kill him. Maybe if Cooper had given Blaine a little more time he would've had the chance to put his glasses on and would've been more awake the puppet wouldn't have seen as scary. Maybe if Cooper had known the other kids in Kindergarten had been telling Blaine about the monster that lives under the bed or that Blaine had just woken from a nightmare about said monster he could've thought of a better way to present his creation to his baby brother, but unfortunately Cooper didn't know any of that.
After that their parents had to move all Blaine's socks into their room in order to get him to sleep at night and even then it took them a few years to convince him that socks were not evil nor were they going to try to eat him as he slept. As he got older and realised that it was not possible for socks to attack him he still despised the footwear and would avoid wearing them whenever he could choosing to go barefoot and telling people it was for fashion or he thought the little bit of skin made him look taller, occasionally when someone asked he would shrug and just say he hated socks but he would leave it at that, not telling anyone why he hated them and shooting evil glares at Cooper the whole time he relayed the story to Kurt who looked at Blaine and quietly asked Blaine if he still thought socks were after him.
