Kurt had always had the fantasy of moving to New York someday, getting his own apartment and studying at NYU or Parsons. He imagined meeting some great guy and having a best friend. But after his mother passed away all hopes of that ever happening flew out the window. He had his father to look after. His mother passed away when he was 11 in a horrible car accident when they still lived in Ohio, but after a year of his father drinking and sitting in his recliner watching football over and over he got his act together after seeing Kurt come home with a gash on his forehead from those stupid jocks shoving him into his locker where his head collided to his open locker door. His father bought a garage in Eliot, Maine for his own car repair shop and they moved 3 months later. Things slowly got better, people in Maine were a little more accepting but to all kids seeing a boy wearing flamboyant clothes and a voice that just would not break was just another reason to bully him. Although the kids here were more subtle about it.
Maine was lovely enough, green and quiet and beautiful. Kurt would spend his weekends helping his dad work in the shop or working on a new clothing design or practising his lines for another school musical. He never had any best friends though. He had 2 close friends, Jason and Ellie, but when they got to together they didn’t spend as much time together. Sure he was lonely, but that’s all he had ever known. His father was his best friend, and he was okay with that.
One day in tenth grade he was working in the shop with this dad and this lady came in asking for help, her car had broken down down the street, so Burt went to help her and left him to run the place. They came back laughing about who knows what and Kurt saw the smile on his father’s face he hadn’t seen in at least 5 years. It warmed his heart. Kurt convinced Burt to call Carole and set up a date, not a year later they were married. It was hard for Kurt sharing his dad with someone else, but he loved Carole, how could you not. She was one of those ladies that would call you ‘Sweetie’ or ‘Honey’ and not in that condescending way. She was sweet and loving and beautiful. She did have an awful taste in fashion but after a few shopping trips with Kurt he sort her out.
He came home from school one day, with only had 6 months left from school and was waiting for letters from the college’s he had applied for. He was hoping to get into a school close to home, the top of his list was The University of Maine, but he applied for places in Boston and New Hampshire too, since they weren’t too far away and he could always come home with in just a few hours if need be. Not only that but he applied for NYU just to see what would happen. He didn’t think he would get in nor would he go if he did but he thought, what’s the harm in applying. He got home to see Burt and Carole sitting in the lounge as Kurt placed his bag by the door,
“Hey dad, hey carole”
“Kurt, sweetie there were some letters that came for you...From some universities.”
Not subtle at all, He smiled to himself and made his way into the lounge to get the letters. Three, one from University Of Maine and one from UMass and another, Kurt stopped dead. Oh crap NYU, shit i didn’t want them seeing this... He walked into the kitchen and leaned against the bench opening Univeristy of Maine,
Dear Kurt Hummel,
We are glad to tell you, you have been accepted
The smile on Kurt’s face looked as if he had just won a million dollars, this was the school he wanted, this was where he was going. He didn’t even bother with the UMass letter. He carefully picked up the letter from NYU as if it was about to blow any second. Too distracted opening the letter he didn’t notice Carole standing by the door watching him.
Dear Mr Hummel,
I am pleased to inform you that you have been accepted
Kurt dropped the letter, he couldn’t read any further. I got in. I got into NYU, if i wanted I could go i could go to New York and studying Theatre i could go...No. I can’t leave dad, i just can’t. We stick together. I can’t leave him.
Carole walked over to him seeing his face she could tell what he was thinking,
“What did it say sweetie?”
Kurt jumped quickly swiping the letters and shoving them into his pockets in his jacket.
“Oh nothing, nothing” He answered too quickly.
“Kurt honey, i know you feel the need to stay and look after your father, and i understand that completely. But this is your life and you know your father would not stand in the way of your dreams.” She placed a hand on his shoulder and he looked up at her.
“I can’t leave him Carole. He...I just can’t”
And with that she dropped it and he went up to his room and went about his afternoon.
The next day at dinner Burt brought up the letters again.
“So kid, what did those letters say? You never told me.”
Flustered he answered, “Oh nothing really. I got into The University of Maine though. That was my number one choice so it doesn’t matter what the others said.”
“One of those were from NYU. I didn’t know you applied for NYU. Did you get in?”
Kurt didn’t know what to say, if he said yes, his dad would probably tell him over and over that he couldn’t just pass that up. NYU was a great school and his dad knew how much he wanted to go before... But he couldn’t lie to his dad.
“Um..Yeah. Yeah i got accepted. But i’m not going! I want to stay in Maine.”
“Kid, NYU was your dream school for such a long time. I know after your mother passed things changed. But Kurt you have an amazing talent and you can’t just hide that from the world. A voice like yours, you could take the world by storm. Don’t let your silly old father get in the way of your dreams. I have Carole, and we will be fine. You don’t need to worry about anything son. I will always love you, and hey, New York is only 4 hours away.”
With that Kurt choose NYU. In 6 months he would be out of Maine. He would be in New York. He would be starting his life. He was scared. But the good scared. He thought about the people he would meet, and how no one would second look him with the outfits he’s wearing. Or his voice. He will just be a normal person come New York. He was ready.
6 Months Later.
Kurt had packed everything in his car and was ready to leave. Wearing his comfortable yet still stylish jeans and a white v neck with a black jacket. It was simple but he was about to be in a car for 4 hours if not longer. He had just put his satchel in the passenger seat and turned around seeing his father in his normal jeans and flannel with a hat to hide his bald head. His arm around Carole wearing her dark straight jeans with black boots and a nice purple silk shirt, her hair down to her shoulders dark brown and straightened. They were perfect together, every time Kurt saw them standing like this he couldn’t help but wish he had someone for himself. He imagined what it would be like to be married waving off his son standing next to his incredibly handsome husband.
He walked up to them to say one last goodbye, Carole brought him into to a big hug. He was going to miss her. They hadn’t known each other for long but he got so used to living with her, she became someone he could talk to about almost anything. She kissed his cheek and he felt a tear fall down his face not knowing if it was from her or himself.
“I’ll miss you sweetie. You call us as soon as you get to your room.” And with that she let go.
Kurt walked over to his dad and he couldn’t help the tears welling up in his eyes. His dad had been there for him whenever he needed him. Those horrid days back in Ohio. He helped him when people started to get rough here, he helped him with school work or just there to talk when Jason and Ellie stopped calling him.
“I’m gonna miss you so much kid.”
“I don’t wanna go dad.” Burt just held onto him harder. He wasn’t sure but he could've sworn he heard him sniffle.
“You go Kurt, you go and make me proud. You are gonna be amazing. And when you get your first job on broadway i will be there. Sitting front row centre. I will be there. I love you so much kid.”
Kurt didn’t want to let go but he had to. He gave his dad one more squeeze and let go. He quickly turned around and got into his car without a second glance he started the car and drove away.
He arrived 4 and a half hours later sending a quick text to his dad letting him know that he arrived and will call once he is all set in his dorm room. He parked his car and went in search of reception not having a clue what he had to do now. He found his way and signed in and got all the information he needed. He was housed in Brittany hall, it said he was rooming with a guy named Chandler which of course made him giggle thinking of Chandler from Friends. God i hope he doesn’t tell horrible jokes every minute. He drove over to the Brittany hall and found his room seeing that Chandler had not moved in yet, which was a nice surprise for Kurt as he could then set up on his own and call his dad in private.
The room wasn’t as small as he was expecting. It had two single beds and two tall boys as well as two desks. He choose the bed on the left side of the room. He only brought up two bags, he would have to go get the rest of his stuff. He decided to unpack his first two bags, luckily one of the bags he brought up had all his bedding so he made his bed and unpacked the rest.
Three hours later everything was unpacked with his laptop on the desk and three framed photos. One of his mother and himself when he was 5, they were on a chair on the porch of their old house. Her long chestnut hair flowing down past her chest holding a giggling Kurt, she had been tickling him to smile for the photo as his dad snapped the shot. It was his favourite photo of his mother. The other of his father and Carole at their wedding and a third of himself and his father one late night they were working at the shop Carole had sneakily taken it when they were on their break eating dinner and laughing at something. He didn’t have many photos to put up. No photos of friends from school, no pets that he grew up with. He started to wonder if his roommate would have lots of photos to put up, if he had a best friend back in his home town.
His stomach grumbled and he realized he hadn’t eaten anything since he left home. It was 8pm and had no idea where to get food. He grabbed his bag and head out. He had taken a shower and changed into his black skinny jeans, brown and black striped sweater over a white undershirt. With his favourite white combat boots. He decided it was a good time to take a walk and explore the area and find somewhere to eat. He already loved the street the hall was on, E 11th street. It was lined with trees and there were townhouses on the opposite side of the street.
He had been walking for about 20 minutes and found a nice little cafe, still open at 8:30pm.
This place is nothing like Maine, I love it!
The waiter gave him a seat by the window, and he ordered a diet coke while looking over the menu and deciding on a caesar salad. He looked around the cafe and spotted this gorgeous guy, wearing dark jeans and a white and red striped long sleeved shirt. He had dark curly hair, Kurt always had a thing for guys with curly hair. He had almost golden colored eyes. wow those eyes are beautiful, oh shit! He realised the guy was looking back at him and he snapped his head to the window cursing to himself. Not five minutes later,
“Hi.”
Kurt looked up and it was him, Kurt could feel his skin heat up at that moment. Thanking God that it was dark in here.
“Uhh, Hello...”
“Can i sit here?”
The guy gestured to the sit opposite Kurt.
“S-Sure”
“I’m Blaine.”
“Kurt”
What is this guy doing, oh shit he is so beautiful. STOP Staring. He looked down and fiddled with his salad and taking a sip from his drink.
“You're new here right?”
“It’s that obvious huh?”
“It shows” The guy shrugged and kept on smiling at him, his smile could brighten up the room. The way it brought up his cheeks, his white teeth just barely showing.
“I just moved here from Maine”
“Oh Maine is beautiful, my family used to go up to Fryeburg a lot... My dads loved it out there, it’s quite and good for hiking.”
Dads...interesting.
“Maine is beautiful”
Blaine’s phone buzzed and he grabbed it out of his pocket and read a quick text.
“I gotta go Kurt. It was nice meeting you.”
“Yeah”
“I hope to see you around...”
Did he just wink at me? What the fuck is going on...
“Bye B-Blaine”
And he was gone. You could not have been more of an idiot Kurt! What the hell this cute-NO beautiful guy talking to you, flirting with you and you say Maine is beautiful. Kurt finished his salad quickly and made his way back to his dorm. His first class wasn’t for another two days but he was exhausted so as soon as he made it back to his dorm, seeing his roommate had not made it yet. He got into his sweats and got into bed, letting sleep take over him. He dreamt of the beautiful boy with golden eyes and dark curly hair.
Ha, Blaine having dads is also something I have not read before! Seems like a good start of a story for me, keep it up.
