Kurt has been busy for the past few days, sketching to his heart's content. Apparently, there was going to be a showcase of their upcoming collection for a few important people and all Blaine could do was watch as Kurt tried his best not to break down as he tried to think of more clothing ideas to incorporate in his designs.
Blaine understood how important it was for Kurt seeing that Isabelle asked him to include some of his designs for their next collection and this event, however small, can make or break him. Every time he goes home, he would see Kurt slumped on the couch, sketching clothes and crumpling papers when it doesn't suit his taste.
He got home that night with the same kind of view and he sighed; Kurt really needed a breather. "Hello." Blaine announced himself as he entered the apartment. Kurt looked up and nodded.
Blaine quietly went to the dining area and unloaded his bag of food; he took the liberty to buy them dinner since Kurt would probably forget to eat that night again. Rachel, on the other hand, was busy withFunny Girlthat she rarely spends time with them anymore. The rehearsal for the show was taking up all of her time and it was becoming lonely in the apartment.
"Kurt, dinner." Blaine called out as he was finished preparing their usual Chinese takeout. Kurt hummed half-heartedly in reply. Blaine shook his head as he waited for Kurt to eat with him and when a few minutes passed, he gave up.
Standing up, he brought the takeout with him and placed it on the coffee table by the couch, carefully but definitely pushing Kurt's sketchpad and things out of the way earning a loud "Hey!" from Kurt.
"I was working!" Kurt protested, trying to get his stuff back. Blaine stopped his hands and forced him to sit still. "Come on, Blaine, I can eat later. I'm trying to get things done." Kurt irritably said, a frown on his face as he glared at Blaine.
Blaine sighed, holding his ground and putting away Kurt's drawing materials to the other side of the room. He saw Kurt stand up and make his way to his things but Blaine stopped him and sat him down on the couch.
"I figured if you're not going to the dining table, I'd bring the food to you, so eat." Blaine ordered him. It was the first time Kurt was seeing Blaine like this so he conceded.
They sat down next to each other and silently indulged in their dinner and Kurt had to admit, he was feeling hungry but he just wasn't hungry enough to let go of his work. They were almost finished when Kurt broke the silence.
"You know I would have eaten if I was hungry." Kurt pouted as he munched on his last few dumplings. Blaine shook his head in disagreement.
"No, you wouldn't have. This has been going on for days, Kurt, and it's not healthy." Blaine scolded him. "You should take a break once in a while." He said, standing up and fixing the coffee table, leaving only their glasses of water.
"But I need this in three days and this is for work and I'm still trying to think of amazing designs!"
"And you did! Kurt, I've seen your work and believe me, they were breath-taking." Blaine said and Kurt countered him with a shake of his head, disbelieving. "But I think you're too stressed out right now that's why you're not contented with what you're making." Blaine observed as he walked back to the living room with a plate of fruits.
Kurt mumbled a small 'thanks' as he reached for an apple. "What do you mean?" Kurt asked. He knew he was stressed out but what could he do, this was a very important moment for him.
"Remember when we went to Central Park two weeks ago? Your designs were amazing at that point because you were relaxed but," Blaine went to the other side of the room and got Kurt's sketchpad. "See your designs now? It's bland, it's normal, it lacks emotion because you're doing it because youhaveto and not because youwantto." He said, comparing Kurt's sketches from Central Park and his sketches from the past few days.
Kurt listened intently and tried to absorb what Blaine was saying. It was true, they were all the same sketches just with different linings but the bottom line was, they did lack the emotions that were needed in a design. They didn't make an impact. Kurt sighed, running a hand through his hair and leaning back on the couch to relax.
"You're right. I'm sorry for being difficult." Kurt apologized, closing his eyes and finally finding the time to take things slowly. Blaine smiled, glad that Kurt understood his point.
"It's okay, I just don't like seeing you get so worked up." Blaine sat down next to him again, more at ease because the tension was lifted around them. "You need to remember that you love designing. Put your heart into it." Blaine said with a smile that Kurt couldn't see.
Kurt nodded silently and smiled, "This is really why it's great having you around all the time." He said and Blaine was caught by surprise. It took a moment for Kurt to realize what he said and he sat upright, fumbling for words. "I mean, I'm not trying to be weird or anything, just—"
Blaine smiled, reaching out to calm Kurt's almost flailing hands. "It's okay, it makes me happy that I'm wanted." He said which made Kurt blush more. "And for the record, I feel the same way too." He winked at Kurt which just made the blushing worse.
Kurt's heart was beating madly in his chest and he prayed to the gods that Blaine can't hear it or he'd be so humiliated. Though it did make him happy that Blaine felt the same way he did.
The next three days went by in a flash with Kurt humming show tunes under his breath as he designed a few more clothing articles that he planned on giving Isabelle. He would constantly ask for Blaine's opinion and Blaine would help out, pointing things that he noticed and telling Kurt his honest thoughts.
In the end, Isabelle told Kurt that two of his designs impressed the higher authorities at Vogue and were on their way to production and will be included in their next collection. It was such great news that Kurt immediately called Blaine up to tell him. Blaine getting a phone was really handy and it made Kurt happy that he can contact Blaine anytime he wants now.
The phone was picked up after the first ring. "Hello?" Blaine said on the other line and Kurt could only squeal in delight. He heard Blaine laugh at the other end then ask, "What's going on?"
"They got two of my designs, Blaine! Two! It's more than what I hoped for!" Kurt squealed some more. It was a good thing that he was at a secluded area of the building where not many people went to because there, he could scream his heart out.
"Congratulations! This calls for a celebration! Do you want to go out?" Blaine asked.
Kurt thought about it and said, "Actually, I'd rather stay at home and watch a movie. Is that okay? I hope Rachel can make it." He mumbled.
"A movie marathon celebration? Count me in. I can't wait for later!" Blaine enthusiastically said. Kurt grinned, it was amazing having someone as sincere as Blaine when it comes to this. "But seriously, Kurt, this is amazing news. You deserve it, congratulations."
Kurt's heart skipped a beat by Blaine's serious tone. He could swear he felt the sincerity of his tone melting into his ear. "Thanks. Be home early! See you later."
He hung up, feeling light as a feather as he made his way back to work.
Once work was done, Kurt was beyond excited to go home. He already had a list of movies in mind that they could watch (though for sure, Rachel would have something to say about it). He bid his workmates goodbye but was stopped in his tracks when he saw who was waiting for him just outside the office building.
"Hey, Kurt."
Kurt tried not to frown out of decency, so instead, he smiled. "Adam!" He said in surprise. "What brings you here?" He asked, confused.
Adam walked towards him with his nonchalant attitude. "I was in the area and I remembered that you worked here so I dropped by. I figured we'd have that coffee since we're here?" Adam cautiously asked.
Kurt looked at his watch and realized that it was still pretty early. He glanced back at Adam who was wearing a hopeful expression and ugh, damn him and his inability to say no.I guess it's best to get this out of the way, I did promise him coffee.
"Sure." Kurt agreed. "Where to?"
Adam beamed at him as he led the way to Kurt's favourite coffee shop. They reached the shop after a while of walking and catching up; Kurt learned that the Adam's Apples just got into another competition and they were hoping to win anything at this point but other than that, it was the usual Adam stories. They drank their coffee and Adam was just going on and on about his last trip to Britain and how he wished Kurt was there because it was a lot of fun.
"What about you? What's going on these days?" Adam asked. Kurt was bubbling with excitement about his latest news that he couldn't help but share it with Adam.
"My design just got chosen to be a part of Vogue's next collection." Kurt relayed with so much excitement and for a moment, he thought that Adam would be disinterested but he was proven wrong. Adam beamed at the news as well.
"Really? That's wonderful! I knew you had it in you, Kurt, you always did." Adam complimented him which made Kurt smile a genuine smile for the first time in Adam's presence.
"Thanks, I'm so excited about it and I think this will really make me start thinking of my career path." Kurt continued. "I can't even believe that my designs were chosen. It's surreal!"
Adam laughed heartily at Kurt's reaction. "Well, you have magic fingers when it comes to designing. Then this is really a day to celebrate, huh? How about we go out and drink? My treat." Adam offered with a grin.
For a moment, Kurt felt like someone was watching him so he looked around and he could have sworn that he spotted a familiar lock of curly hair exit the coffee shop. No, it can't be, he should still be at work.Kurt shrugged it off and focused back on his conversation with Adam.
"I think I'll pass. I'm really tired and I've got my roommates waiting back home." Kurt gently refused the offer. Adam eyed him curiously.
"I guess that Blaine guy's waiting back home, huh?" Adam said in passing and Kurt just brushed his question away. "Are you dating?" Adam asked.
"We're not. He's really just a close friend of mine and Rachel's." Kurt simply replied, not bothering to elaborate because there was no need to. Adam nodded, taking a sip of his coffee.
"How come I haven't seen him around before? Does he live with you now?" Adam continued to pry and Kurt just had to put his coffee down to reply.
"Okay, that isn't really any of your business anymore. I mean, don't get me wrong, I know I'm friendly with you but we've got history together, Adam, and this is getting uncomfortable." Kurt honestly replied.
Adam stopped bombarding him with questions but instead, apologized for his prying. "Sorry, I didn't mean to overstep." He said and Kurt nodded. "I'm going to grab us some snack, what was it you liked again? Chocolate cake?"
Kurt raised an eyebrow. "No, cheesecake, but you don't have to because I was just about to leave anyway. I still have something to pick up from the grocery store." Kurt said, standing up and dusting his pants off of invisible dirt. "It was nice catching up with you though and thanks for the coffee. I'm gonna go ahead, bye!" Kurt smiled and waved as he hurried to leave.
He left Adam just standing there, nodding by himself. He's a big guy, he can go home alone. There was a skip on Kurt's steps as he made his way back to the apartment, excited to celebrate with his real friends.
Before he arrived back at home, Kurt received a text message from Rachel that she can't make it to that night's movie marathon celebration as she had rehearsal to finish and she didn't know when they'll be done. It's a bummer but he guessed he could celebrate with Rachel another day.
Stepping inside the apartment, he expected Blaine to already be back home and anticipated the smell of dinner welcoming him. However, the loft was dark and empty when he arrived.I guess Blaine's running late.
For the meantime, Kurt prepared a simple salad for dinner as well as an easy marinated chicken for both him and Blaine. He fixed the movies that they'll watch and passed the time by watching some reality shows or whatever show was on TV.
It was nearly 10 p.m. when the door opened and in came Blaine, looking relaxed but glum. Kurt stared at him for a while, hidden just in the light of the movie credits that was playing. Blaine finally opened the lights.
"Oh, hey, you're back." Blaine greeted, walking towards the dining area and dropping a few of the things that he bought, whatever they were.
Kurt didn't know what was wrong but he was pretty sure there was something off with Blaine. He was as excited as him earlier that day on the phone and now he's just...empty. He was a bit angry but he needed to ask what had happened that changed Blaine's mood.
"What do you mean 'you're back'?" Kurt asked the first thing that he noticed. Blaine shrugged, getting a glass of water and preparing his Chinese takeout. Kurt's bit his lip; Blaine planned to have dinner without him? "Blaine, what's going on? What do you mean 'you're back'?" Kurt asked again, finally getting up and walking towards the dining room.
Blaine shook his head. "Nothing. I was just here earlier and you weren't here yet so I went out for a walk." He said nonchalantly, opening his food and tucking in.
Kurt's nose flared, "Walk? For four hours? Did you go to another state?" He asked, his face getting hotter because of frustration. "What happened to our movie marathon celebration? I started the movie without you in case you didn't notice." Kurt added, pointing towards the television.
Blaine wasn't looking up at him at all, he was just concentrating on his Chinese takeout. "Yeah, I didn't think you'd be back so early. Maybe you had other plans, I don't know." Blaine reasoned out.
Kurt frowned, what the hell was Blaine even talking about? "What other plans? I even told you to be home early. I...what?" Kurt was at a loss for words. This was the first time that he and Blaine were not on the same page but all he got was a small shrug from the other man. Kurt let out a frustrated sigh. "Fine, whatever."
Kurt walked towards the fridge and got what was supposed to be their dinner. He brought the salad and the chicken to the coffee table and slumped on the couch, playing another movie. To think that he even skipped dinner just to wait for someone who doesn't even have a plan to actually join him. He bit his lip in frustration just so that he won't scream and shout.
Blaine saw Kurt's food and immediately realized that he didn't have his dinner yet with the amount of food on the plate that he carried. He noticed there were two slices of chicken and he was sure that one was for him. Instantly, he felt guilty.
What was he even mad about? He didn't have any right to be angry at all. He tried to think why he was mad and the answer that came into mind was that he thought their celebration would be put off because he saw Kurt with Adam earlier that day at the coffee shop near Kurt's office.
He planned on surprising Kurt and picking him up from work but thought of getting him something first. However, seeing that he was with someone else, Blaine left without saying hello and he assumed that Kurt would have plans that night since he was with Adam.
Blaine glanced at Kurt and saw him eating with a frown on his face even though he was watching The Notebook. He sighed.Better go and apologize for being a prick.Blaine stood up, getting something from the fridge and preparing to give it to Kurt.
Meanwhile, Kurt really was trying hard to pay attention to the movie and not to the man shuffling in the kitchen. He gave up eating since he lost his appetite with what occurred but continued to sulk on the sofa. After a few minutes, a plate of cheesecake was placed on top of the coffee table in front of him but he ignored it, continuing to watch the movie.
He was sitting on the far left side of the couch and he felt Blaine sit at the far right side, creating a distance between them. Blaine, too, was holding a piece of cheesecake. Even though Kurt would devour that cheesecake within seconds, he had to wait.
"I'm sorry." Kurt heard Blaine say but he ignored him though it was hard to ignore someone who sounded like a kicked puppy. He focused on the movie instead. "Kurt," Blaine tried again. "Kurt, I'm sorry." Blaine repeated but Kurt kept his eyes fixed on the TV.
Blaine reached for the remote and paused the movie, making Kurt finally look at him—albeit with a fierce glare.
"What?" Kurt spat out. Blaine flinched but he faced Kurt nonetheless. He deserved that after all.
Blaine fidgeted as he tried to apologize. "Look, I'm sorry for what I did. I know we had a plan but I seriously thought you've made other plans at the last minute and I got...well, I got a little mad." He said, expecting Kurt to scream at him.
"You got mad for something that you assumed?" Kurt retorted angrily, not quite shouting but a little louder than usual. "I was a phone call away, Blaine, you could have asked." He pointed out.
"I know, I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking straight." Blaine said. For a moment, Kurt just stared at him with a frown but after a while, Blaine saw that Kurt massaged his forehead then let out a sigh.
Kurt shook his head in disbelief. "I don't even know where you got that idea from." He said and then he eyed the cake. "Is this your apology?"
Blaine nodded. "A celebratory cake for you but yeah, it's to apologize as well. I'm sorry." He repeated. Kurt nodded, finally taking the cake.
"Fine. But next time, if you pull a stunt like this again, I'm going to kick you out. Clear?" Kurt threatened and Blaine could only nod in reply. He took his first bite and it felt like heaven on his tongue.
Blaine watched as Kurt savoured every bite. "I know how much you love cheesecake so I—"
"Oh my god, I love you." Kurt blurted out as he took a few more bites. Now, Blaine was really taken by surprise and he was sure that his heart did a complete flip inside of his chest. But Kurt didn't seem to notice his slip of words as well as Blaine's reaction to it. "This is heaven! And it tastes like..." Kurt paused, realization dawning on him. "Is this from Café & Cakes?"
"Yeah?" was all the he could muster as a reply. Blaine saw the pieces connecting together in Kurt's brain, it literally showed in his face and once it did, Kurt's jaw dropped and he looked pointedly at Blaine.
"Did you see me there with Adam? Is that why you thought I had other plans?" Kurt voiced out the one thing that Blaine wanted to avoid. Blaine kept quiet and proceeded to eat his cake. Kurt placed his cake down and clapped. "You did! You were mad because of that?" He added with a big smile on his face.
Blaine just shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Well, I wouldn't say mad but you looked like you were going to be there for some time so I didn't..."
That's when Kurt burst out giggling. "Seriously, B, that guy and I...it's never gonna happen again. It's just...not right." Kurt told Blaine, he wasn't even sure why he was telling this to Blaine, it's not like he was his boyfriend. Also, why was he angry? He can't be jea— "Wait, were you jealous?" Kurt blurted out before he could stop himself.
Blaine blushed deep red. "What? No! Kurt, no, you know I'm not. I don't have any right to be." He said clearly, trying to defend himself. "I was just a bit bummed, I guess, because I thought our celebration would be put off since he was in the picture."
"So you were alittlejealous?" Kurt squinted his eyes at Blaine, trying again. Blaine looked at him cautiously.
"Jealous is not the right word for it. But anyway, let's leave it at that, okay?"
Kurt snickered but he let it go, nodding. A little part of him was happy that Adam made Blaine feel insecure because it was something that he didn't expect. They managed to eat most of the cheesecake and Kurt savoured every bite of it while all Blaine could do was watch him eat.
There was something about the moment that Blaine's having with Kurt that made his heart beat fast. He hasn't felt that in a while. Watching Kurt enjoy something so simple that was from him made him want to do this every day, just watch and enjoy Kurt's company.
"You're really tearing through it, huh?" Kurt said after a while of silence, the movie forgotten.
Blaine blinked out of his reverie. "What?" He dumbly asked.
Kurt took a bite again and pointed his fork at Blaine, "The list. You're tearing through my list." He reminded Blaine. "Number 19: Cheesecake. Lots of it." Kurt recited, knowing the list by heart. He looked down at the cake before saying, "I bet Stefan's going to love you after this."
[√] 19. Cheesecake. Lots of it.
It was like a brick of reality hit Blaine in the back of the head as he remembered the real reason he was there: he was a fictional character and he was trying to get back to his own world. Spending time with Kurt was just something that came out of it and doing these things for Kurt was a favour he asked. No, he wasn't doing it for Kurt, he was doing it for Stefan.
Right, Stefan Morrell, the one he loves.
After a pause, Blaine finally spoke out, "Yeah. I hope he does." He said even though he, himself, knew how half-hearted he sounded. Kurt let out a small smile. Both of them realizing that being together like this was a temporary thing.
They finished eating and both were slumped on the couch, finally watching The Notebook properly on the television. There was a comfortable silence that enveloped the two of them until Kurt let out a small yawn.
"Are you sleepy?" Blaine asked quietly as Kurt rubbed his eyes a little.
"Not really. It's just—my eyes are tired and my back hurts but I really want to finish the movie. I love this part." Kurt replied, not taking his eyes off the television.
They were quiet again as Blaine tried to ignore Kurt's constant yawning and small stretching for his back. When he couldn't take it anymore, he broke the silence again. "Okay, come on." Blaine said, placing a pillow on his lap and offering it so Kurt could lie down and be in a more comfortable position while watching the rest of the movie.
"What?" Kurt said, surprised. Blaine patted the pillow, indicating for Kurt to lie down on it. "No, it's okay. I'm fine." He said but clearly, he wasn't and it was a very good offer.
"You're uncomfortable, come on. I know we have ground rules but—look, I can't concentrate on the movie with you thrashing about and stretching your back." Blaine defended. It took Kurt a moment to think before he finally accepted Blaine's offer. This wasn't breaking the ground rules, was it? This was definitely and completely necessary.
It was surprisingly comfortable lying on Blaine's lap—well, a pillow technically but comfortable nonetheless. It felt natural that they were like this while watching a movie and Kurt tried hard not to think about it. They were halfway into the movie when Kurt felt Blaine's hand on his head, gently running his fingers at the tip of his hair.
"If you keep doing that, I might fall asleep." Kurt commented, slightly laughing. Blaine caught himself and blushed.
"Oh sorry, ground rules, I didn't realize I was—"
"No, it's alright. It was relaxing. And that is absolutely necessary." Kurt laughed a little to ease Blaine's nerves. It took him a while but Blaine found himself caressing Kurt's hair again and after a few minutes, he could hear Kurt's even breathing. He took a peek and realized that Kurt was already fast asleep.
Blaine let out a small and quiet laugh. "And you said you weren't tired." He talked to himself. Slowly, he reached for the remote control and switched the TV off which engulfed them in darkness besides the light from the lamp on the other side of the room.
Blaine continued to play with Kurt's hair, feeling sleepy as well. He gazed down at Kurt's sleeping face and thought that he even looked beautiful while sleeping. His finger traced the outline of Kurt's face but he caught himself when he reached his lips. Blaine groaned, leaning his head back onto the couch, covering his face with his arm.
"This is bad. This is really, really bad." He mumbled to himself as he tried to ignore his heart and go to sleep.
That night, he dreamt of Dalton and of all his friends back at the dormitory. He could remember their faces well even if he hasn't seen them in a while. He also dreamt of Stefan and in the dream Stefan said, "You're mine, Blaine. I'm the one you're supposed to be with. Come back to me."
