It felt like seconds later when there was a sudden pounding on the door. Blaine sat up immediately as he heard a muffled voice saying, “Blaine! Open up!”
Blaine rubbed his eyes groggily and turned to look at his clock. 3:14 am. Who the heck pounds on somebody’s door at 3:14am?
“Bbblllaaaiiinneeee!” A voice sing-songed from the hallway. Blaine rolled his eyes as he realized it was Puck, surprise at the late hour fading.
Blaine got up and started when he saw Kurt sitting on his bed doing homework. Kurt noticed his sudden surprise and raised his eyebrows in question.
“Sorry.” Blaine mumbled as he stretched, “I’m used to rooming alone. Why are you still up?”
Kurt shrugged, holding up his Calc book, “I am determined to finish my math homework.”
Blaine frowned, “You write so fast I am surprised you haven’t finished already.’
Puck pounded on the door again and said, “Kurt! I forgot you were in here! Blaine and Kurt! Open up! I can hear you talking!”
Blaine ignored Puck as Kurt answered, “I finished my actual homework like at 12:30 and figured that I might as well keep going. Now I am almost two weeks ahead.”
“What?” Blaine asked, starting forward to look at Kurt’s notebook but hesitating as Puck added a particularly loud pound on the door. He then quickly changed course to let Puck in before he woke up the whole floor.
Blaine unlocked the door and was practically blown over as Puck plowed in the room saying, “Finally! You have to turn on your TV to channel 5 right now!” Puck didn’t pause to let them respond but ran to the TV remote and turned it on himself.
Puck changed it to channel 5 and pointed frantically, “Look! Look!”
Blaine gasped as he saw a huge building up in flames on the television and Puck quickly turned up the volume. Blaine could hear a newswoman saying, “-can see, firefighters are just getting on the scene. It is unclear at this moment just how much of the campus is in flames. This footage was only discovered minutes ago and only has a frontal view, but we can hope that at least some it of can be salvaged. We don’t know what this means for the Dalton Academy population of 1,500 students and staff and it is still unknown if everyone had escaped the building safely. Hopefully we can come back with more information after the break.”
The dorm was silent for a few seconds as they all got over the shock at what they just heard and Puck broke it saying, “Finn and I fell asleep watching TV and when we woke up this was on the news.”
“How far is Dalton from here?” Kurt asked.
“About an hour.” Blaine responded. “It’s our biggest competition. You don’t have to board there like you do here but they have a uniform.”
“It’s a high school?” Kurt asked, looking more concerned.
“Ya.” Puck responded somberly, then gestured frantically, “Come on, Finn and I are gathering people in the Junior commons so we can watch with everyone else.”
“No thanks.” Kurt said immediately turning back to his Calc homework.
“But-” Puck began as Finn barreled clumsily into the room.
“Blaine!” Finn paused as he noticed Puck was in the room and the TV was already on, “Oh. Puck must have told-” Finn stopped suddenly mid sentence as his gaze landed on Kurt, his face paling. Finn swallowed audibly, looking like a deer frozen in headlights as Kurt’s eyes narrowed in his direction.
Kurt frowned at him for a few seconds before asking softly, “This is Finn? As in Finn Hudson?”
Blaine looked between Finn and Kurt nervously, hoping that nothing horrible was about to happen.
When nobody said anything in response, Kurt took it as confirmation and asked angrily, “Why the fuck are you here?”
Finn took a few steps back at Kurt’s harsh tone before responding, “I’ve been here since sophomore year actually...”
Kurt glared at him stonily before asking, “Does my dad know you go here?”
“Ya.” Finn said cautiously, “But don’t worry. He told me not tell anybody about how you used to be or what happened or anything like that.”
There was a long silence in the room before Puck asked, looking surprised at the tension between them, “How do you guys know each other?”
Kurt turned his glare to Puck and said, “We went to the same highschool Freshman year and our parents know each other.”
“They’re dating.” Finn supplied.
“Oh.” Puck said seemingly unfazed by Kurt’s glare. Blaine was slightly impressed. He didn’t know how Puck could hold Kurt’s angry gaze so casually.
Puck plopped down on the edge of Kurt’s bed, ignoring Kurt’s sound of annoyance as he said, “I’d be mad too at the possibility of Finn being my stepbrother. I mean being stuck with Hudson for the rest of my life would be-” Puck let out a sudden burst of laughter as he looked at Kurt face, “Is that a Scooby Band-Aid?”
“Its Blaine’s.” Kurt said, swatting away Puck’s pointing finger.
“What did he do to get that onto to you?” Puck asked suggestively, turning to Blaine. “Promise Hummel a blowjob Blainers?”
Blaine felt his face reddening as Kurt sneered back, “What’s it to you Puckerman? Wanna watch?”
Puck snickered as Blaine found his voice and yelled his response too late, “No!”
Kurt gave him a mock pout and whined, “Why not Blainers?” Blaine winced at the repeated use of that hated nickname as Kurt continued, “I thought you said you were fine with exibitionalism.”
Blaine groaned at his mistake while Puck laughed and then slapped Kurt on the back. “I’m sorry about the homophobe accusation earlier,” Puck said, still grinning, “Finn told me you’re gay.”
Kurt scoffed and said, “You’re gaydar isn’t worth shit.” Blaine almost laughed, but stopped himself before he got dragged into the conversation again.
Puck shrugged, “It’s not-existent actually.”
Kurt turned his cocky grin to Finn, “So you’ve already broken your promise to keep my life to yourself?”
Puck nodded and when Finn didn’t say anything but a mumbled apology, he turned to Kurt and said jokingly, “You’re not going to kill him right?”
Kurt chuckled and said, “I might.”
Puck sighed, “I suppose I could be okay with that as long as I get to help.” Finn looked at his best friend in horror and Blaine almost stepped forward to comfort the tall boy, barely believing that Finn actually thought Kurt and Puck would kill him.
Puck stretched and yawned then said, “We could always throw him off the roof.”
“No. That wouldn’t do...” Kurt said in mock consideration, “I heard there is a train not far from here. We could always tie him to the tracks.”
“There’s an idea!” Puck said, nodding, “It be a long and painful wait, but a quick lights out.”
Finn looked at the two of them uncomfortably as they discussed his murder and asked, “You guys are kidding right?”
Puck rolled his eyes and jerked his head toward Finn as he said to Kurt, “He’s a slow one.”
Kurt’s smile faded a little as he looked at Finn and said, “No kidding. I remember.”
Finn shifted his feet at bit before saying, “I know I was a jerk to you before and I’m really s-”
“Don’t.” Kurt cut in suddenly angry again, making Blaine nervous.
“Why not?” Finn asked, “I owe you an apol-”
“I got your letter.” Kurt said, cutting him off again. “It was really nice sorry on paper. I don’t need another one.”
Finn frowned at him and said, “I would have visited you in juvie but Burt said it wasn’t the best idea.”
“Well no shit!” Kurt snarled angrily, “I told him I didn’t want anyone who believed a word out of Bradley’s fucking mouth to ever come near me at all!”
Finn sighed and said softly, “I don’t believe him now...” Blaine held back all the questions threatening to boil over. Did Finn now why Kurt had been in juvie? Who is Bradley? Why did Finn need to apologize?
Kurt just sneered at him and said, “Doesn’t mean much now that he’s locked up for murder.”
“I’m sor-” Finn began but stopped as soon as he saw the dangerous look in Kurt’s eyes.
“Get out, Finn.” Kurt demanded suddenly, standing up.
“What?” Finn asked fearfully.
“You’ve known I’ve been here two days and didn’t tell me? Keeping secrets from me with my father?” Kurt asked threateningly.
Puck stepped between Kurt and Finn and said, “Whoa, cool down man.” Blaine glanced at Puck appreciatively, glad he didn’t have to intervene himself.
Finn looked at the floor guiltily, “Look, I’d said I was-”
“I don’t need your damn fucking apologies!” Kurt suddenly shouted, making Blaine jump.
Finn just stood there awkwardly for a few moments before Puck suddenly started pushing him out the door saying, “Let him cool down.”
“But-” Fin protested, trying to get back into the room.
“I don’t know what’s going on, but if you stay Hummel looks like he’s ready to beat the living shit out of you.” Puck said shutting the door behind them on Finn’s continued protests.
Blaine suddenly realized that he was alone with Kurt and looked cautiously over at the other boy. He fearfully opened his mouth to ask if he was okay but Kurt beat him to it.
“I’m fine, Blaine.” Kurt said, turning his angry glare to him. “Why don’t you just go help throw a Dalton pity party with your friends.”
Blaine frowned at him, annoyed, “I know you're mad but people could be dying, Kurt.”
Kurt just sneered again, “Did it ever cross your mind that I don’t give a shit?”
“No.” Blaine said curtly, “You seemed plenty concerned about Dalton before.”
Kurt just stared him down and asked, “So you’re not leaving?”
Blaine hesitated. It wasn’t like he wanted to stay up here all alone with Kurt while the rest of his friends piled together in the Junior commons, but he knew he’d worry that Kurt would do something stupid if he left.
Kurt sighed in aggravation and stormed over to his dresser, pulling out a pair of sweatpants and a V-neck as he said, “Fine. I’m going to take a shower. Maybe I’ll actually get some hot water this time.”
“Everyone showers in the morning.” Blaine explained, “That’s why I shower at night.”
“Well aren’t you just one big shit McKinley Einstein.” Kurt said sarcastically, slamming the bathroom door behind him.
Blaine sighed at the closed bathroom door. Just when he thought he was getting somewhere, Kurt seemed to have gotten even worse than before. Blaine felt as though he could still feel the previous tension in the room floating around like a cloud. He was pretty sure that if Puck didn’t have such a level head in these types of situations, Kurt probably would have ended up physically harming Finn.
Blaine still couldn’t help but wonder what Kurt was so angry with Finn about anyway. He knew it had something to do with some lie a boy named Bradley had told and the fact that Finn had apparently been mean to Kurt in the past, which was surprising. But he had a feeling it mostly had to do with the fact that Kurt’s father had told Finn that Kurt would be at McKinley but had kept it a secret from his son.
Blaine sighed again, hoping he wouldn’t be dragged in the middle of this sudden family drama. It almost made him grateful that he barely ever spoke to any of his relatives outside of short hellos and goodbyes.
He heard the shower turn on as he pulled his desk chair in front of the TV so he could watch the news on Dalton.
Kurt came out the the bathroom about a half an hour later and Blaine stopped himself from berating Kurt about wasting water before he said, “Everybody who was in the building got out alive but about 20 have serious burns and they still don’t know what started the fire.”
Kurt didn’t say anything in response, he just threw himself down onto his bed and started doing his math homework again. But Blaine knew he cared, he just wished he would show it.
“Do you mind if I shut this off?” Blaine asked, gesturing to the TV.
“No.” Kurt replied shortly, not even looking up.
Blaine sighed at his roommate’s sudden aloofness and turned off the TV before crawling into bed. It was like one step forward and three steps back. “Night. You should get some sleep.” Blaine mumbled, knowing he wouldn’t get an answer as he allowed the steady sound of Kurt’s rapid writing to lull him back to sleep.

What spooked me the most was Karofsky trying to break into their room. So poor Kurt, never gets a break from that bully. The twins crack me up. Finn ugh! Loving the dynamic between Kurt and Blaine. Can't wait to read the next update.
