Blaine could see the doctor's mouth forming words, but he couldn't hear them. Everything was silent and the room seemed to spin and blur. He walked back to the wall and sat against it, steadying himself. Blaine concentrated on the sound of his heart beating, the only thing he could hear. He tried to push the thoughts out of his head. The thoughts that asked the same questions of "why Kurt and not him?" and "Who? Who had done this?"
Blaine felt a hand at his shoulder and looked up. It was Carol. "Are you okay?" her voice sounded far away even though she was standing right next to him. Finn was standing behind her, his face still in an odd assortment of emotions, looking at Blaine. Blaine’s eyebrows furrowed as he tried to find the strength to both breathe and speak without completely loosing it. His eyes nearly broke Carole and Finn’s hearts. Blaine always seemed to have that effect on people.
Carol sat down next to him and stared forward at Kurt's closed up hospital room. She reached her hand out for Blaine’s and held it, in a reassuring manner, still keeping her eyes fixed ahead.
Finn was standing, staring at Kurt's room also. Completely motionless. "He could die," he let out in a shallow voice, as if that had just registered to him.
Carol looked up at Finn, "Finn, come here," she said softly. Finn walked limply over next to his mother and sunk down next to her, his face in shock. Carol reached her other hand out and grabbed Finn's, pulling both Finn and Blaine's hands next to her, holding tightly.
"If there's one thing I know about Kurt, it's that he's strong," she spoke slowly, "and right now he needs a support system that is just as strong."
The three of them sat and watched both the locked up room and Burt speaking with the surgeon. Holding tight to each other's hands, a mix of emotions hung in the air: fear, confusion, emptiness, but also hope.
They watched as Burt bit his lip, as the whispers went from bad to worse. They watched as Burt's face contorted into every possible feeling imaginable. They watched silently, squeezing hands every few moments, to remind each other they were there. They watched until the doctor left and Mr. Hummel stepped forward, staring at the ground with weak eyes and an even more weakened heart.
Seconds seemed to turn to minutes as the questions between all four of them sat thick in the air. Burt looked up, his eyes reflecting the hospital lights, his voice shaky and light, "Kur-Kurt's in a coma-like state. From th-the seizure." tears ran down his face, rolling until they faded at the bottom of his face.
"But, he's...going to...live?" Finn asked behind his own tears. Blaine had never seen Finn cry. He had seen Finn mad or upset, sure. But never cry. In fact he had never seen any of Kurt's family cry, until now.
"Wait, coma like state?" Blaine whispered.
"The doctor said that sometimes when a person goes into a coma, they can still have facial expressions, open and close their eyes, but..." Burt took a deep breathe and thought for a moment before speaking again, "They can't move their limbs and need to be on life support. It could be hours, or..."
Burt turned around, his back toward them and let his head fall. Blaine could hear sobs and it gave him chills. To see rough and tough Burt break down was like a slap in the face from reality. Reminding Blaine just how bad this was. Carol let go of Blaine and Finn's hands and grabbed Burt up in a hug. It only lasted a few seconds before he pulled away and walked down the hall. He kicked a chair so hard it slid to the other wall and collapsed.
Burt kept walking down the hall yelling out to the air. Carol ran after him, trying to soothe.
Blaine stood up and walked to the window. The window trapped behind blinds, that held the wall between his life, his love. He heard Finn's phone ring and Finn began speaking lightly into it. Blaine thought that it must have been Rachel because the girl sounded hysterical and Finn kept telling her to calm down.
The dark-haired boy put his hand up to the window, letting it stay still against the cold glass. He wasn't sure whether Kurt was allowed visitors but he honestly didn't really care. He walked around to the door walking through, flashes of Kurt shaking on his bed, laying in a puddle of blood, crying, cold, weak, shot, pained, bruised. Ready for another terrifying image to be there waiting for me when he looked at him.
Blaine stood at the end of Kurt's bed staring at him. Kurt looked as though he was sleeping, still and silent. Peaceful. Blaine walked to the side of his bed and let his hand hover over the beautiful boy in front of him's hand. He was afraid, afraid of hurting him again. Kurt seemed fragile, so fragile.
He slowly let his hand down, covering Kurt’s. Feeling the bones, the veins, and the softness of it. He looked at Kurt's face, his eyes fluttered for a half a second, making Blaine’s heart melt. And for a half a second Blaine thought kurt would wake, his eyes would open and they could fall asleep together again.
But he soon realized that this was what Burt had meant by coma-like state. Blaine couldn't help but wonder if Kurt could feel Blaine’s hand on his, if Kurt could hear his voice as he spoke the words that had sat in Blaine’s head the last thirty minutes or so, "Kurt, please be strong, Kurt." Blaine looked up from Kurt's face out the other window in Kurt's room, the one that lead to the outside world. Something that had seemed so foreign to him now, because that was not his world. Blaine’s world was here in this bed, trapped by walls and doctors, trapped inside his own head, not able to wake up.
Blaine could see the stars, in the darkness of the sky. It was almost black, and he thought to himself that it must have been just before dawn. The time when Blaine always happened to be awake, in the darkest hour of the day.
