Kurt Hummel had woken up that morning, dragged himself out of bed, and put on the outfit he had carefully selected the night before, taking tedious care to ensure that every hem was in place, every wrinkle smoothed out.
After saying goodbye to his parents and nibbling on a low-fat blueberry muffin, he had gotten into his car, sending a quick text, letting his boyfriend know he would be over to pick him up in fifteen minutes.
On the other side of Lima, a buzzing phone woke up a sleepy Blaine Anderson, who, up to that point, had been experiencing a really good dream involving him, Kurt, and a dewy meadow of lilacs… He checked his phone, and quickly shot out of bed, pulling on his clothes with lightening speed and racing to his front door, where an impatient Kurt honked for him to hurry up.
“Morning!” Blaine said as he shut the passenger door of Kurt’s car, planting a sweet kiss on Kurt’s cheek before stealing a bite of his muffin.
“Good morning to you as well,” Kurt smiled as he backed out of Blaine’s driveway, heading towards McKinley High School. They drove in silence, only the sound of Kurt’s Broadway mix CD softly thrumming in the background. They finally pulled up to the parking lot, whereupon Kurt noticed there was a lack of cars. It wasn’t exactly early, and it was a Wednesday…why were there so few cars here? Kurt shrugged it off, and pulled up into his usual parking spot, pulling the keys out of the ignition and getting out. Blaine followed behind him, grabbing his hand in his own.
As they walked into the school, Kurt noticed how desolate it seemed. No one was in sight…the usual sound of ruffled papers and laughter was masked by complete and utter silence. Was there some last minute cancellation that he was unaware of?
Blaine was about to echo the similar concern when he was cut off by the sight of Rory. Walking towards them, his usual grin was gone, replaced by a grave, serious expression. Blaine smiled, greeting him brightly, “Hey, Rory! How’s it going, bud –.” However, Blaine never finished his sentence, because the next thing he knew, he was on the floor, unconscious. Everything in his stream of consciousness went black, the last remnants of his smile glued onto his face.
Kurt’s expression shifted from happiness to complete and utter shock. His eyes were fixated on Rory’s hands, in which he held an odd-looking contraption, sort of a cross between a pen and a laser pointer. “What the—Rory, what the hell did you just do? Rory…Rory!” With a look that could only be described as regret, Rory lifted up the device and pointed towards Kurt. “I’m sorry, but I have to do this.”
“Wh—Have to do what. I don’t unders—,” and with a last panicked gasp of air, Kurt’s eyes went blank, his body limp, and his body slumped to the ground on top of Blaine’s.
Rory quickly ran up to the bodies, checking their heart rates to make sure he had done this rate. They were still beating, and so with that, he dragged Kurt and Blaine to the nearest janitor’s closet, making sure to lock it on his way out. Before he shut the door, he turned to look at the dark outlines of their bodies in the dark room, pausing for a minute. “Sorry, Dads, but you’ll understand soon enough.”
And with a final slam of the door, Rory pressed the green button on his watch, blending into the masses of students that finally flooded the school.
It had started off as any other normal day.
But what they didn’t know was that it would be the day their whole worlds began crash down all around them.
