“He’s lying,” Karofsky ground out, his eyes glittering with anger. “I never did anything to him.”
“Why would Kurt make this up?” Mr. Schue asked. “What would he possible have to gain from this?”
“That’s a good question, David.” Karofsky’s father turned to look his son. Karofsky sort of cringed in his seat.
“Maybe he likes me,” Karofsky muttered. Kurt rolled his eyes, but his hands tightened around each other in his lap.
“I’m going to be straight with you, Mr. Karofsky-“ Burt began.
“Paul, please.”
“Paul,” Burt continued. “I don’t care if your kid is gay, straight, orange, purple or a dinosaur. He sexually assaulted my kid and then threatened to kill him.”
Kurt felt Carole slip her hand around his and he shot her a grateful smile. He’d never be able to get through this without his parents, and he cursed Blaine for being right while wishing desperately that his boyfriend was there with him. Blaine, however, had done exactly what he’d said – hopped a flight back to LA at the crack of dawn after he kissed Kurt goodbye.
“In foreign countries, that kind of thing gets you killed,” Coach Sylvester casually pointed out from the corner of the office. “It’s why I keep petitioning the government to reinstate fascism.”
Silence reigned for a long moment, and then Principal Figgins spoke.
“As of this moment, you are suspended for five days, Mr. Karofsky, pending a school board investigation.”
“That’s it?” Burt demanded hotly.
“I’m afraid it’s the best I can do right now,” Principal Figgins replied. “There’s simply no proof, Mr. Hummel. It’s your son’s word against David’s.”
Kurt felt tears prick in the corners of his eyes, but he held them back with a deep breath. He watched silently as Karofsky left with his father, the suspension effective immediately.
“You okay, Kurt?” Burt asked, looking at him. Kurt nodded. “We’ll get this fixed, kiddo.”
“I should get to class,” Kurt managed to get out. He said goodbye to his parents and stepped out into the hallway just as the bell rang.
“Porcelain.” Coach Sylvester’s voice filled his ears.
“Yes, Coach?” Kurt asked, turning around.
“I just wanted to let you know that I’ve got my eyes on you,” she said, staring at him. He tried not to flinch – the best way to handle Coach Sylvester was by showing no fear. “If anyone, that meathead Karofsky or otherwise, so much as damages a thread on highly stylish Cheerios uniform you’re wearing, I want to know about it.”
“Seriously?”
“Of course,” Sue continued affably. “We can’t win Nationals if my star cheerleader is in a body bag,” she paused. “And I can’t go to the school board with my new caning policy unless I have proof that it’s needed.”
Kurt blinked at her for a moment, before promising that he would keep her informed.
“Good,” she replied, walking away.
Kurt stared after as the bell rang, and then he hurried off to class.
*
“How’d it go?” Blaine asked, his head propped up on his hand. He was lying on his side on his bed, staring at Kurt through his computer screen. They’d recently discovered Skype, and used it sometimes because it was nice to actually see the person while talking to them.
“Not what we’d hoped,” Kurt told him. “He got suspended for five days and the school board is going to look into it.”
“That’s it?” Blaine replied. He was shocked. How could something so serious be dismissed?
“They don’t have any proof, Blaine,” Kurt answered. “It’s my word against his.” He sighed. “I wish I’d never said anything.”
“Kurt, you had to tell someone,” Blaine insisted. “You can’t just… handle it all by yourself.”
“I know,” Kurt said miserably. “I just… he’s going to come to school in five days and kill me or something.”
“I think he’s going to have too many people watching him to do anything about it.”
“Maybe,” Kurt agreed. “We can hope.”
*
Blaine went into work on Monday, still worrying about Kurt.
“Holy crap, dude, did you see the script?” Jeff asked, dropping into his chair next to Blaine in the make up trailer.
“For the next episode?” Blaine asked.
“Yeah,” Jeff answered as his make up artist went to work.
“Not yet – it was dropped off this morning, but I didn’t get a chance to read it before I left. Besides, we still have two or three days left to shoot before we get to that one.” Jeff turned his head, earning a ‘tut’ noise from his make up artist.
“Trust me on this, Blaine. Read the script.”
*
Blaine rushed home from work that night and he picked up the script first thing. He skimmed through the first few scenes, making note of the song choices, and realized this was the Valentine’s Day episode.
His heart started pounding as he read the scene where James and Toby were taking a walk and talking, and then they sang to each other and… well.
It looked like James was going to get his first kiss… and he was going to get his first on-screen kiss.
Blaine closed the script with a snap.
He had to tell Kurt.
*
“So what I’m about to say is disclosed information and if you tell anyone, I can get in serious trouble,” Blaine said into the phone, once Kurt answered.
“Am I getting Dalton scoop?” Kurt asked, teasing.
“Actually, yes,” Blaine replied. “We got our scripts for the Valentine’s Day episode today.”
“Wow, they’re really cutting it close with filming.”
“It happens that way sometimes,” Blaine told him. “In the script…” Blaine trailed off. He didn’t know how to say it.
“James is going to kiss Toby, isn’t he?” Kurt spoke softly after a moment.
“Yeah,” Blaine murmured. “Which means that I…”
“Will be kissing Sebastian,” Kurt finished for him. “Will the fangirls survive?” he tried to joke, but Blaine didn’t believe him.
“Are you upset?” Blaine wanted to know, half afraid to hear the answer.
“How can I be?” Kurt sighed. “It’s your job, Blaine. It’s not like you’re going around kissing guys whenever. I wouldn’t like it regardless of who you were kissing.”
“Do you not like Sebastian?” Blaine questioned, hearing a tone in Kurt’s voice.
“Not particularly,” Kurt answered. “He’s got this smirky little meerkat face and he comes over very… fake.”
“It’s called acting,” Blaine chuckled. “You really think he looks like a meerkat?”
“Me and half of Tumblr. I’ve seen the gifs.”
“You guys are terrible,” Blaine laughed.
“Yes, but you’re laughing at us.”
“Touch,” Blaine said. “So are we… okay?”
“Of course we are,” Kurt reassured him. “Just…”
“Just what?”
“Don’t enjoy it too much, okay?”
“He’s not you.” Blaine smiled. “Of course I won’t.”
“You always know the right thing to say,K” Kurt replied.
“That’s because I’m awesome,” Blaine insisted.
“Good night, Blaine,” Kurt said. “Love you.”
“I love you, too,” Blaine hung up the phone and smiled again.
He had no trouble falling asleep that night.
