“Who the hell is this?” A female voice screamed
“K-Kurt Hummel” Kurt stuttered and couldn’t help but think, ‘They called me, why are they asking me who I am?’
“Well Kurt Hummel, Would you stop fucking calling my cell, I can’t take the constant phone calls!” The unknown woman ranted
“Huh, what, I haven’t been calling-Oh” realisation hit Kurt at bullet-train pace and the apologies flowed out of his mouth just as quick “Sorry, I was trying to call my boyfriend, Blaine Anderson, I guess he gave me the wrong number for his hotel, sorry..” Kurt rambled out all unnecessary information that he knew the woman on the other line wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about but he felt like she needed some form of explanation, he wouldn’t be surprised if the line had gone dead because of his pointless rant but much to his astonishment, it hadn’t, instead a series of low shaky breaths emanated from the other line before speech emerged.
“Did you say your boyfriend is Blaine Anderson?” The female questioned her voice much calmer and in some sense younger? All the previous venom that she had previously spat through vicious language had disappeared into a soft, almost melodic and somewhat familiar tone.
“Y-yes” Kurt faltered warily
There was a loud crash followed by raised voices and thunderous footsteps, Kurt had determined that the other cell had been hastily dropped and the woman on the other end had left in a rage but as Kurt went to hit the disconnect button a familiar voice sounded in the background.
“Alex! Alex get the hell off me, I wanna go back in the pool!” A male voice screamed and that voice Kurt would know anywhere.
Blaine.
However, who was this Alex he was yelling at, Blaine had told Kurt that he had gone with a few friends that Kurt was familiar with but never had he heard of this Alex. Was he cheating, perhaps? A tornado of unpleasant thoughts pulsed through Kurt’s veins and it turned into a mental fire fuelled with jealousy but as he was seething with fury the receiver was retrieved and the female voice returned.
“Hold on, Kurt, it looks like your boyfriend has some explaining to do” The girl said with a speciously sly ring to her voice.
A high-pitched shriek sounded from the other line but it was a yelp that Kurt was familiar with, Kurt had just recalled that Blaine was still present. Clambering noises and sounds of protest soon followed before the line went dead.
Kurt sighed and was slightly apprehensive about calling back so slumped back into the chair before turning on the television to whatever random channel that popped up and in this case happened to be a heated debate on kitchen appliances on the shopping channel. Kurt didn’t have a chance to change it before his phone, once again, began to ring.
“Kurt” A breathless Blaine said “Hey”
“What” Kurt spat “What do you want?” Kurt hated acting this way towards the person he loves but he couldn’t help but feel betrayed, how could Blaine not mention this ‘Alex’ person?
“Kurt, what’s wrong, what have I done?” Blaine asked hesitantly.
“How about you explain who Alex is?” Kurt snapped.
“Oh God No, Kurt it’s not what you think, honestly, she’s...She is my...” Blaine stammered
A wave of excitement flooded through Kurt at the mention of the word ‘she’, it was so much clearer now, the woman that had answered the phone must of been the person in question, Alex, and Blaine was gay therefore it wouldn’t be possible for him to cheat, right? Right?!
“Sister” Blaine finished, almost ashamed.
“Oh, you never talk about her, or y-your f-family in general” Kurt stuttered as his stomach swooped sadly as he came to the realisation that Blaine’s family had always a tough area for them to cover and remained behind locked doors and Kurt hadn’t the slightest idea why.
“Can we not talk about it over the phone, Alex has just broke the bolt on the room I locked her in and I don’t want her eavesdropping, I’ll be back in two days, we’ll talk then, Bye” Blaine mumbled and before Kurt could return his goodbyes, the line let out that familiar buzz signalling Blaine had cut him off and just as well as silent tears stained the rug under Kurt’s feet.
Blaine did, in fact, return in two days, he pulled up at the Hummel-Hudson’s household looking as miserable as he did on the phone, Kurt watched from the safety of his blinded bedroom window and allowed Finn to answer the door and patiently awaited Blaine’s presence in his room. He stumbled in, tripping on the upturned carpet and sat on Kurt’s bed in silence. Kurt was going to start out before a petite voice emerged from the smaller man.
“Alex is the only sane one in my family” He paused and sucked in a deep breath “And that’s saying something because she has been kicked out of more schools than I can even count, in and out of Juvie and under house arrest and the only way we could let that vacation slide by the cops is because my fucking rich uncle has connections and could disable the tag but only for a short-period of time, four days to be exact” Blaine shuddered, his eyes becoming glazed as a reassuring arm pulled him into a hug.
“Dad is in prison, sent down for attempted murder, I can’t even look the guy in eye anymore, he didn’t just assault any old stranger, and it was my neighbour, Mr. Kristen, took care of me when no one else bothered, now the old man can’t even remember me because my dad fucked him up so badly and he didn’t do it for money or crap like that, it was because he was gay, he was the only one who I came out to and he helped me because he knew how malicious the world can be but when the word was out, my dad was the first to knock some sense into me, that was until Mr. K stopped him but earned himself a cracked scull and brain haemorrhage from a steel crow bar” Blaine stated coldly, his anger and shame towards his father speaking volumes as to why he never brought him up.
Kurt eyes widened with horror as he froze from gently caressing Blaine’s back with one hand and wiping his tears with the other, he knew the universe could be cruel but homophobia took on its own universe when it came to Blaine’s dad.
“Mom doesn’t do commitment, we were tipped off last month she was on the south of the equator but who knows, could be in the North Pole now after she has dumped her last kid on the street” Blaine was on his feet by now and Kurt could sense he was throwing up those well-guarded barriers he had before he met and trusted Kurt. He took two cautious steps to Blaine to have him collapse in his arms, his body racking with high pitched sobs.
“W-we live with my Granddad, Homophobic as hell and I would rather be in Harry Potter’s living situation than in that wreck, he doesn’t even look at me, calls me you-know-what if he catches sight of me, one reason I used to board at Dalton” His crying softened allowing Kurt to murmur condolences in his ear “Alex puts him in his place when she’s around but that’s not often, she only just got allowed to have a cell phone after being thoroughly looked into, making sure she doesn’t do illegal activities with it and I got her number before we went to Canada and must have given you that slip of paper instead of the hotel one” He sobbed “I am such a fucking idiot! Why can’t they just see I am that six year old that loved SpongeBob and used to dress up like the pirate from it! I am no different; I wish I was like the kid they wanted!” Blaine was engulfed with rage now but still his hot tears fell.
Kurt rose to his feet, leaving a wounded Blaine to stare up at him with hurt and fear of rejection “You are an idiot Blaine” Kurt began, monotone. Blaine looked shattered, his face scrunching as prohibited any more tears to drip to the ground; Kurt knelt down, trying to gain eye contact. “You are stupid because you believe you need to change yourself for those assholes and in actual fact, you don’t, you know why? Because you are perfect, I love the way you are and I can’t give you an exact figure of all the people who think the same, think of the future if it helps, think about a year from now, we will be in New York, sharing a slightly dingy apartment but good enough, I’ll be at NYADA and you’ll be enrolled in a high school for your senior year and all will be forgotten of them except maybe a few phone calls from your sister but hey, it will be brilliant!”
Kurt didn’t get an answer straight away and it was impossible to get one when Blaine’s lips were occupied on his own, a sweet and tender open-mouthed kiss that had the ability to make them dizzy as they both somehow ended lying on the bed. Breaking apart a few seconds later, they smiled lovingly, their arms wound around each other as they snuggled into the mattress, content to stay like this in silence, well that was until Kurt said;
“SpongeBob, Really Blaine?”
