The night was thankfully cool to the point Kurt was so glad he didn't sweat much. He headed to the locker room where he secluded himself at the farthest locker from the football players. The place was so disgustingly stuffy and all Kurt could smell was body odor and dirty feet. It wasn't pleasant, but that only made him thankful for the great fragrance his hair spray gave off. He was a little pissed off that he forgot his cologne at home.
Kurt got to pat Dave on the shoulder and tell him he was proud of him before he left the locker room and met up with the other Cheerios on the field where they stood with their jersey jackets on and some sprawled out on the lawn to relax after a stressful week of first two days back at school. Who started school on a Thursday anyway?
"We're gonna head to Breadstix with the football players. Wanna join us?" Santana asked in a shockingly calm and friendly tone. These were one of those incredibly rare moments when she wasn't being her bitchy opinionated and obvious self.
Kurt thought for a moment and wrinkled his nose. "I've eaten nothing but healthy stuff all day. I seriously need some coffee. Thanks for the offer and all, but I think I'm gonna head to Lima Bean," Kurt said as he looked at his iPhone. He was doing good on timing. Lima Bean was supposed to be opened until 11:30 PM.
Santana shrugged her shoulders as Brittney cut in the conversation. "Your loss. Our gain. More bread sticks for us," she said.
Santana furrowed her eyebrows. "Brittney. The bread sticks are endless, remember?"
Brittney's face looked shocked. "Since when?"
Kurt scoffed and waved to them as he left the stadium and got in his Navigator, heading over to Lima Bean, still in his Cheerios uniform. He didn't mind. Today, he was proud of his school team. Usually he felt embarrassed to walk into public with anything having to do with his school on his outfit.
Kurt walked into Lima Bean and instantly felt his tightened muscles relax. The aroma of fresh coffee beans and the relaxing atmosphere. Only half of the dining area was taken up, but most people were on their laptops or reading a book with a large coffee cup beside them.
He crossed his arms over his chest, his eyes on the menu. Was he in the mood to try something new or did he just want to stick to his usual? He mentally shook his head. He wanted his usual. After a minute in line, he was next. He ordered a Grande Non-Fat Mocha. When he paid and got his order, he turned to the dining area, deciding where he wanted to sit. His usual table, which was the one in the middle that was closest to the exit, was taken. But by someone he knew.
Shocked and somewhat happy to see him, Kurt walked over to look down at Blaine, who looked to be in the middle of his homework with a cup that was clearly marked Medium Drip.
"Blaine Anderson drinking coffee and doing homework. To what do I owe the pleasure of such a sight?" Kurt asked in a friendly but teasing voice.
Blaine froze and looked up at Kurt, smiling slightly. "Hello to you too, Kurt. To what do I owe the pleasure of your presence?" Blaine asked in return, teasing Kurt right back with making fun of his tone. He motioned to the seat before him and Kurt happily took that invitation and sat down.
"Everyone's at Breadstix, but I wanted coffee instead of food. Wasn't expecting to see you here," Kurt said as he took a sip of his scolding hot coffee, savoring the relaxing feeling of the coffee's warmth traveling to his stomach.
Blaine looked down at his opened notebook and book, shrugging slightly. "Kinda wanted a quiet place to do my homework. This place seemed perfect," Blaine explained in a lowered voice.
Kurt wanted to question, but he bit his tongue and stopped himself. He shouldn't be pressing or like he was prying. They only started to talk after eleven years today. So he just nodded his head and looked at his coffee. "You know...we have a library."
Blaine looked up at Kurt and scrunched his nose in an I-don't-think-so look. "Nah. They don't have amazing coffee and a relaxing atmosphere. Tried working there yesterday. Just felt too rushed and like a loner there."
Like you aren't a loner anyways, Kurt thought to himself as he just nodded his head again. "Fair enough. But I too find it easier to work here than at the library. But thanks to this years schedule with Finn and my dad and step mom, I don't have a problem with doing my homework at home anymore."
"Ah, that's right. Finn's now your Brother-in-Law," Blaine said as he pointed the eraser part of his mechanical pencil at Kurt, looking thoughtful.
"You two seemed to get along," Kurt pointed out.
"He's actually my lab partner, but we got to talk a lot. Really cool guy," Blaine said as he nodded his head.
Kurt just seemed to be taken back by how much Blaine has changed. It seems that only yesterday, Kurt was asking Blaine for something, with his messy curls and biker-boy manor, with Blaine treating Kurt like he was beneath him.
Kurt gulped down a lump in his throat. Fifteen minutes into class and his pencil ran out of led. He needed to finish taking notes, but he was a scared freshman, too scared to ask the teacher, who was at once mean and unforgiving towards unpreparedness, for a pencil to borrow. He leaned forward and tapped Blaine Anderson on the shoulders meekly.
Blaine looked as if he stiffened as he slowly turned around and looked at Kurt with a glare and curiosity in his eyes. "What do you want, Lady Face?" Blaine asked in a whisper and an annoyed tone.
"C-can I borrow a pencil?" Kurt asked in a shaky tone.
Blaine scoffed. "Like I'd let your gayness touch my stuff. Fuck no," Blaine replied in a really rude fashion.
Kurt felt like his pride was hurt. His face fell and he wanted to cry. But he shook it off and finally managed to ask the teacher, who was pathetically okay with it.
"That's nice of him. Yeah, Finn's cool like that. He seems to be friendly with those around him. Wait." Kurt stopped to think for a moment. "You have Mrs. Kemp for eighth, don't you."
Blaine nodded his head.
"This is gold. We have a class together!" Kurt said. he couldn't believe this. He was excited about.
Blaine let out a low and short chuckle, which was enough to automatically cause Kurt's lips to curl into a smile slightly.
Blaine's smile slowed to a straight line as he looked back down at his work and turned a page in his notebook, writing something down on the fresh page. He then ripped it out and handed it to Kurt. "I don't mean to be forward or anything, but it'd be great if we could study together sometime for Government. Here's my cell number. Don't...call or text after ten, 'cause my dad takes my phone away around that time unless it's the weekend,"
Kurt didn't ask any questions about his father like he wanted to, but he just took the piece of paper happily and folded it, tucking it under his coffee cup. "Not being forward at all," Kurt said with a shake of his head, being an earnest. "Sounds perfect. Can't remember the last time I had a study buddy," Kurt said as he looked down at his phone, reading the time. "Well as much as I loved to stay and chat more, I have to get home so I can get my homework out of the way. I want my weekend to be free to do what I plan to do. And I don't want to keep you from your homework anymore," Kurt said as he got to his feet and put his phone in his pocket, grabbing his coffee cup in one hand and gingerly holding the piece of paper with Blaine's number on it in the other.
Blaine gave a tight smile which only meant it was forced as he nodded his head. "See you Monday, I guess."
Kurt put the chair back in place against the table and waved his hand with the piece of paper in it, walking away.
