I had never in my life seen anything quite like my boyfriend sugar high.
It was insane, to put it lightly. Kurt giggled and jumped and grinned... I stopped counting how many Pixy Stix he devoured after five or six. And let me clarify that these weren't just the six-inch ones. No, they were the three foot long monster sticks. I mean, I guess I could blame myself for not stopping him, but how was I to know that they would have the effect they did?
Ava, on the other hand, I was not as surprised about. She had been known to act... um... slightly more energetic under the influence of high dosages of sugar. I've been to a decade worth of her birthday parties, complete with candy, cake, and teenage girls... I would know.
So I wasn't surprised in the least when she organized an escape plan with Kurt and Brittany.
"Britt! Hand me the box and I'll make a run for it! You guys follow!" the three of them ran out up the stairs of Rachel's basement and out of the front door so fast, none of us could even tell what had happened. It was a full minute before someone spoke.
"Who wants to go get them?" Quinn groaned. This was followed by another silence.
"Not it. I've dealt with a sugar high Kurt once before. And there is no way in hell I'm doing it again," Finn said after a few seconds.
"I can't go. My chair..." Artie added quickly.
"Mike and I have to, um... leave soon..." said Tina. A couple other people nodded to display their similar intentions.
"I have to watch over the house," Rachel said. "My dads wouldn't want anything to happen in my absence."
"And I don't want to," Santana snapped. I've only met Santana a handful of times, but I could definitely tell that that girl did not hold anything back. "I'll leave the duty of locating the sugar drunk runaways to you losers. I'm out. Who's coming with?" And then everybody got up and followed her up the stairs and out of the door, except for me, Rachel, Mercedes, Finn, and Artie.
"So..." I tried to break the silence. "Who wants go and try to find them?"
"Nobody wants to. I vote we just leave them there. Wherever they are." Artie replied, gathering his things and rolling towards the stairs. Rachel and Finn immediately helped Artie get his chair up the stairs, and Mercedes and I followed them up, keeping the conversation going.
"Yeah, man. I mean... They'll wake up and come find us eventually," Finn said.
"Woah, wait." I said, a bit taken aback. "They're gonna fall asleep?"
"Undoubtedly," Artie said, reaching the top of the landing. "One time, I gave Britt a huge bucket of gummy bears. She only got one-fourth of the way through before she passed out."
"Yeah. And I saw Kurt that one time at my birthday. He had a huge sugar rush... I mean it wasn't as bad as this one but he wouldn't stop talking. He sang me happy birthday in eight different languages. English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Chinese, Pig Latin, and I don't even know what the last one was. It sounded like... a drunk Chewbacca. And then he had one of the biggest sugar crashes I've ever seen. He just collapsed on the couch and like... died or something. He slept for almost twelve hours..."
"You guys are awful. I actually care about my friends. If they are passed out on the side of the road, I think we should go pick them up," Mercedes said with an roll of her eyes. I was glad she was willing to do it, I guess. Because from the sound of it, it didn't seem like an easy or pleasant task. I mean... I love Kurt and Ava but if they are passed out from too much sugar, I don't know how I'd get them home...
"It sounds like they're drunk and hung-over or something," I commented with a slight smirk.
"Sugar is alcohol to Kurt and Britt. That's why Kurt never eats it and also why we try to keep it away from Britt at all costs."
"Makes sense..." I murmured.
"So are none of you guys gonna help me?" Rachel, Artie, and Finn exchanged a look, and then all turned their heads to me.
"Oh, no... I don't know if-"
Then Finn gave me this look. It was an odd look. It kind of terrified me in a way. I could read it all too well. It was like he was saying "Kurt's my brother. You are supposed to be his boyfriend. So you should go help him." It was almost threatening about it too. I immediately felt one inch tall and all I could really do is nod.
"You coming with, Blaine?"
"I... I guess so. I mean... I'm Ava's ride home. And... I can't show up at Burt's without Kurt. That'd be..." I was rambling, and the four of them were giving me weird looks. "Alright fine. I'll go."
.:~:.
Kurt, Brittany, and Ava made it two miles away. Don't ask me how. I wasn't there. But somehow, they managed to run two miles and crash in the playground of one of Lima's elementary schools. It took Mercedes and I a couple of hours to locate them. The sun was rising and we were just exhausted from all of the driving around we were doing.
We didn't exactly find them on our own, though. It was nearing six in the morning when I heard a certain "Astonishing" from Little Women ringtone from my pocket. That would be Ava, of course.
"Whereareyoucanyoucomegetus?" I laughed lightly at her slurred words. They really were drunk off of sugar.
"Come again?"
"We're at some playground. Come get us, Blainey, it's so damn cold."
"What playground?"
"I don't know! I barely ever go to Lima! I live in Westerville!"
"Um... Okay. Maybe Mercedes knows. We're on our way..." and then I hung up the phone.
"Where are they?"
"Um... Ava said they were at some playground. I don't really know Lima that well, so..."
"Okay, so they're probably at Lima Elementary. It's not all that far from Rachel's. We drove past it only a couple dozen times." Mercedes groaned, clearly exhausted.
"I have no idea where that is, so you're gonna have to tell me where to do. Or drive, seeing as I can barely keep my eyes open."
"Okay, fine. Pull over and let me in the front." I did just that and Mercedes and I switched seats. I immediately reclined the passenger seat and curled myself up in a fetal position, already feeling my eyelids drop. "Hey! Don't you dare fall asleep! We gotta find the runaways. You know, I was gonna suggest that we get some coffee after we find them, but something tells me that Kurt, Britt, and Ava might want some too. And caffeine."
"You're right. Let's not. How far away is the playground from here?" I mumbled sleepily.
"Only about five minutes. Go ahead and take a nap, I don't care. But when we get to the playground, you're helping me wake the dead."
I didn't even mumble a reply before I was fast asleep.
.:~:.
Waking the dead it the most perfect description for this situation.
It was actually kind of funny, looking back on it. But in that moment it was anything but.
We found the three passed out underneath a tree, surrounded in wrappers. I picked up the wrappers first while Mercedes made her first attempt at waking the three of them. Ava actually woke up pretty easily. She got up and walked to my car, immediately stretching her body across the whole back seat. Brittany was dead. She was too heavy for Mercedes or me to carry alone, so it ended up that Mercedes carried her feet and I carried her upper body. We ended up having to put her on top of Ava, which didn't make either of them too happy. I can't exactly repeat the words they said... So I won't.
Kurt was... in between the two in terms of difficulty to transport. He wouldn't get up and walk on his own. But he wasn't too heavy to carry by myself. (Seriously, how did that even make sense? Britt looks a freaking twig!) So I lifted Kurt up, carrying him like a toddler. His face nuzzled into my neck, and I guess I didn't mind the fact that I had to carry him the whole distance back to the parking lot.
I dropped Ava Brittany off first. I didn't know where Brittany lived, so I brought her back to Rachel's house. I left Ava there too, because her house was all the way in Westerville and I didn't have the time or the energy to drive all that way. And Burt probably wouldn't like it if I had a stranger over his house... I figured she'd call her parents in the morning or something. I considered it some sort of payback for her having us find them. Next I brought Mercedes home, and I thanked her for the help and we promised to talk again.
When we got back to Kurt's house, I tried to wake him, but ended up carrying him again. It kind of hurt (my ribs were still healing, after all), but the pain was manageable. I climbed up the stairs and found my way in the darkness into Kurt's room, placing him gently on the bed, and crawling in the spot next to him. He stirred, and turned to look me in the eyes.
"You're lucky I'm so tired, 'cuz this would be the perfect time to-" he stopped abruptly. I was instantly curious, naturally.
"Time to what?"
"I'm not gonna finish that sentence." I laughed, but did not give up.
"Time to what, love?"
"You said love again."
"I did. You're avoiding the question."
"You're right," Kurt said simply.
"You're insane. What would it be the perfect time to do?"
But there was no reply. Kurt was fast asleep, his breathing deep and even. I chuckled lightly to myself, gave him a light kiss on the forehead, and fell asleep myself.
