But there he went again worrying about things he didn’t need to concern himself with. He was going out with Kurt, on a date, and he had been so very excited for this day to come that he had to keep a tight hold on himself and his nerves. Blaine knew that being around the actor was comforting and it made it easy for him to let go of himself just a little, allow him to be more relaxed and free-thinking…though that also proved to be problematic at the same time. He knew he was lucky this time around, not pushing Kurt so far past his own level of comfort that it’d also push him away. But he was very well capable of doing just that, it had happened before, and he wasn’t fond of the idea of doing it again…especially with Kurt. Blaine wasn’t the most romantic individual, he just enjoyed the little things like watching movies, going out to eat, getting coffee together, cuddling…ultimately just spending time together. And he knew that Kurt was a busy individual, so he didn’t want to be the type of person to ask him to choose between his work and classes and all that and Blaine…he just wasn’t nearly that selfish, or brave for that matter to ask for something like that. I am going to drive myself insane thinking this much.
“Where’s the coffee when I need it…” he mumbled lightly to himself as he waited patiently for Kurt, needing some sort of relaxer in order to stop the million thoughts from whizzing in his head, none of which seemed to make the slightest bit of sense now that he had shut off all worries. If he was going to go on a date with Kurt then he didn’t want to ruin it because he couldn’t keep himself from being concerned about every single little thing. So he did exactly what he’d normally do before playing a piano piece or before performing a song he had written for the guitar, whether it was in front of a crowd or for himself he always had the same routine….Blaine lightly closed his eyes, standing straight on his feet and took one long, drawn out deep breath. It may not have seemed like much, but it made all the difference in the world once the door came flying open and a familiar face stood in the doorway. The musician took one glance at Kurt and immediately felt his lips pull into a soft smile, “You look…” Blaine hesitated, closing his mouth to think of the right word for just how stunning the taller man looked. But he couldn’t find the right way to put it, so he simply just kept eye contact with him, not breaking his gaze from the other’s face even when Kurt glanced down at the floor. “Mhmm,” he mumbled unintelligently, noticing that neither of them had yet to move, despite the fact that they really should be going. But his mind was a little clouded, and he could feel that same wave of impulse that he had when they were in the music room, sitting on the floor next to each other with little to no space between them….
Blaine forced his eyes away, remembering that he had something for Kurt. “I got you something…” he said with a kind smile as he pulled the sole purple Orchid from behind his back, glancing at it with a certain fondness before he held it in front of him for the actor. “I know it’s a little silly…but I figure one day I’ll see you on a Broadway stage and you’ll be so used to getting flowers that it might become mundane. Plus, if I can remember correctly you said Orchids were your favorite…and I know how much you like them so…yeah…” he stopped himself, realizing he was rambling unattractively. Blaine glanced up at Kurt, smiling a little timidly when he took the flower, and slipped a hand into his pocket while the other rubbed at the back of his neck, something which he was starting to do more often around Kurt then he probably should. But it was a nervous habit, like the way he kept a bit of space between the two of them, and how he had needed to always have his hands either doing something or tucked safely into his pockets so he didn’t do anything drastically stupid. He felt his feet become heavy as he contemplated moving away from the doorway, but his body wasn’t as keen on the idea as his conscious was. “You look absolutely amazing,” he smiled lightly, not being able to hold back his opinion much longer as he met his eyes again.
In all honesty, Kurt had kind of initiated this whole date concept. He’d mentioned the dinner. He’d bought the tickets. Yet he hadn’t actually clicked to the fact that it was a date and half of him was crying out to stop right now, to not go and the other half was just begging him to be careful, not to let his guard down too much. It seemed stupid with how comfortable he was around Blaine, to refuse to let himself be that comfortable when he was meant to be entirely relaxed but he just had to be cautious. Everything seemed far too good and he honestly just couldn’t deal with yet another joke or attempt to hurt him whether intentional or not. As strong as he was, he was already broken to a degree and he’d already said he didn’t know how much more he could take. In the past, if he still had the mentality and the naivety of his sixteen year old self after only one heart break he would be way more excited than he was standing there looking at Blaine with his brain completely broken and on hold while he took in the situation. He would have pulled Blaine into a hug without thinking about the fact they were in physical contact, maybe even given him a light kiss without any second thought. However after everything he’d been through, he was weary of making the first move. He was wary of reciprocating because he knew that when he fell he fell. He fell hard and pulling himself back up from that was impossibly hard, painful and emotionally tiring. That was why he was guarded, why he was simply just standing there with a faint blush and a light smile, clutching the door handle for dear life and failing to maintain eye contact for too long.
After raising his eyebrow lightly at Blaine’s unfinished words, which admittedly made him a little self conscious, he straightened out the jacket, fastening the delicately and intricately detailed button. Kurt would instantly admit was the sole reason he fell in love with the suit in the first place, which seemed stupid considering the suit itself was fairly eye-catching to begin with but the button had been the thing to make him buy it instantly. After making sure his tie was straight and resting at that perfect length, tucked into the jacket without any wrinkling and knot which sat perfectly square, Kurt looked back up at Blaine, frowning a little with curiosity. He honestly didn’t know what expression he had on his face as he saw the orchid. He could feel stinging at the back of his eyes at the gesture, the dryness of his throat preventing him from being polite and saying thank you, the slight curl of his lips, the softening of his brow as his slightly shaking fingers reached out to take the flower graciously. Not only was the flower itself his favorite, the color was stunning, deep and rich with contrasting pattern. It was breathtaking, but that wasn’t what had taken his breath away in the slightest. It was the gesture in itself. No one had ever given him a flower, not to mention his favorite of all time and definitely not in such a sweet manner. He brought it to his nose, his smile increasing at the soft fragrance before his eyes flicked back to the musician.
“You remembered?” Kurt managed to whisper eventually, not without its slight break from fighting back the wave of overwhelming emotion which had captured him. He stepped back into the room beckoning Blaine in as he worried his lip between his teeth and hurriedly placed the flower into a small ornate vase which Kurt had bought because it was the exact color of the shirt he needed from McQueen’s collection a few seasons back. “Thank you.” He called from the bathroom as he filled it with water and placed it on the desk, lightly stroking the petal with his index finger fondly. After walking up to Blaine, he hesitated momentarily before giving him a quick peck on the cheek. “Thank you.” Kurt’s second gracious remark was a lot softer, more genuine and heart felt as he glanced back over at the flower. “You don’t look too bad yourself, by the way.” Kurt managed to reel himself back into his sharp personality giving a light chuckle before heading back to the still open door. “We really should be going now… don’t want to be late.” The actor patted his pockets to check that everything he needed was still in there before holding the door for Blaine and following him out, falling in to step next to him as they exited the familiar residency block. “So… are you excited?”
