Blaine lay on his bed with one hand behind his head and the other resting on his stomach. Drumming his fingers, he felt his stomach gurgle and decided he might as well get up and feed himself. Scratching his belly, he sat up and threw his legs over the end of the bed. Checking his watch he tried to calculate in his head how long he had left until Saturday. He'd so far kept to his promise to himself not to call Kurt. Now that Stephen was dealing with Kurt's “Dear Diary” entries he had no idea whether or not he'd submitted anything new or what he was currently doing or thinking. Maybe that's a good thing though Blaine thought to himself. Rubbing his face he heard his phone vibrating on his nightstand. Right on time Stephen Blaine chuckled to himself.
Hi Blaine! Happy New Year! Thanks for your voicemail. Hope you're ok. Kurt
Blaine's breath caught in his throat as he saw who the text was from – Kurt must have finished his essays already. His fingers hovered over the screen as he tried to think of the most appropriate response. Feeling a pressure in his abdomen he dropped his phone onto his bed and headed through to the bathroom while he tried to decide if he should reply to Kurt and if he did, what would he say?! After flushing and washing his hand, Blaine returned to his bedroom to see the screen of his phone flashing with an incoming call. Not checking the caller ID he hesitantly answered the call.
“Um, Blaine Anderson.” He stuttered.
“Forget your name there boss?” Stephen joked. Blaine laughed quietly and listened as Stephen informed him of the latest emergency to hit the office.
8 fucking hours! You have got to be fucking kidding me with this shit! Blaine cursed to himself as he finally left the office. See if I renew your service contract you dick. Make me wait 4 hours for a spare part. Spare part my ass. Blaine continued to mumble under his breath as he felt a raindrop land on his cheek. Perfect. Popping his collar and pulling his denim jacket close around his body, he tucked his hands into his armpits and joined the crowd heading for the subway station. As the rain became heavier, Blaine kept his head down still mulling over the last few hours he'd had to spend in the office despite today being his first day off in 6 months. When Stephen had called him to tell him the site had crashed he figured it would be a quick fix – an hour tops! Sadly not! It transpired that the server had crashed and the technician his service company sent knew less about the problem than Blaine did! The service contract was up for renewal in 3 weeks and after today Blaine had no intention of renewing it. The final straw had been when Blaine had snatched the screwdriver out of the technicians hand, unscrewed the back panel, called the technicians supervisor himself, ordered the spare part and fitted it himself. After spending the majority of his day back in the office, Blaine just wanted to go home, open a beer and lie down in the silence until he was due back at work at 6am.
Keeping his head down, Blaine focussed on the feet walking around him as he sidestepped as needed and tried to keep the rain out his eyes. Looking up to see how far he still had to go, Blaine cursed as a raindrop landed right in his eye. Closing his eyes to rub the water away, he turned the corner and crashed right into someone.
“Oh shit, fuck! Sorry dude!”
“Blaine?” Blaine's breath caught in his throat as he heard a voice that sounded unnervingly familiar. Looking up and opening his eyes, he stared right into the familiar blue-green that he never thought he'd see again.
“Kurt! I'm so sorry-I didn't see you-Are you ok?” Blaine rushed out and Kurt giggled softly.
“Always the gentleman.” He smiled, moving closer to Blaine to cover him with his umbrella. “Are you alright? You looked in pain as you came round the corner?”
“Oh, um, raindrop got in my eye. I didn't mean to crash into you. Sorry.” Blaine smiled slightly and mentally kicked himself. He made a move to continue on his way before he could mess anything up but felt a hand on his arm.
“Are you busy? Do you have time for a coffee?” Kurt asked, his face full of hope and a gentle smile.
“Um, well I was just...um..yeah, why not.” Blaine decided to take a chance. He had totally intended on calling Kurt at the weekend to see if he could arrange a meeting but today was as good a day as any he guessed. Who knows, maybe he'll cheer me up a bit Blaine thought to himself.
“Brilliant! There's this great little place just back there we could go to? Its good but quiet.” Kurt gestured behind him keeping Blaine covered by his umbrella. Blaine nodded and both men turned and walked the short distance to the coffee shop. Looking up at the cup shaped sign, Blaine smiled at the shops name “Helena Handbaskets”. Walking through the door Kurt held open for him, Blaine took in the comfortable looking couches and antique looking tables with wire legged chairs. Following Kurt, he took his place behind him in the short queue.
“Hey Kurt! Not seen you in a few days!”
“Hey Marissa! Deadlines are not my friend!” Kurt chuckled as he chatted to his favourite barista. “I'll have a non-fat mocha and this guy will have a medium drip.” Blaine's head snapped up.
“You remembered my coffee order.” He stated, shocked and slightly pleased.
“Of course, I remember nearly everything.” Kurt replied, blushing slightly. Marissa smirked at the interaction between the two men, wondering if the curly haired newbie is the guy in the picture Kurt keeps in his wallet. She shook her head as Kurt reached for his wallet.
“On the house” she whispered, as Blaine continued to look around and take in his surroundings. Winking at Kurt, she turned the cups to face him and judging by the blush on Kurt's face when he saw the name “ Kurt” & “Blaine” on the cups, she knew she'd guessed correctly.
Kurt handed Blaine his cup and gestured to one of the comfortable looking couches Blaine had noticed on his way in. Blaine made his way over and shook off his soaking denim jacket and hung it over the back of a nearby chair as Kurt dropped his umbrella beside the couch and sat down a few inches away from him.
“So, how have you been?” Kurt asked tentatively, not knowing exactly where to start.
“Um, yeah, I'm good. You?” Blaine replied, not trusting his voice.
“Yeah, good! Um, I got into NYADA.”
“That's good to hear. I knew you'd get in. They're lucky to have you.” Blaine replied, sipping his coffee.
“So what brings you to New York? Are you at college here too?” Kurt asked, trying to find a away to engage Blaine in conversation.
“Um, no, not exactly. I um...I run my own company.” Blaine admitted, seeming embarrassed.
“Really?! Wow! That's amazing Blaine! Never pegged you for the businessman type!” Kurt laughed softly. “What type of company?”
“Its a um... its a website.” Blaine said, proud of what he'd achieved but wary of Kurt's response if he realised he was signed up to it. “We um...After we broke up, I threw myself into school and graduated valedictorian. My dad gave me an endowment as a present which enabled me to set up the site.” Blaine stopped talking as he noticed the shocked look on Kurt's face.
“Wow! That's incredible. Belated congratulations!” Kurt beamed, touching Blaine's knee softly but both of them jumping at the shock of the familiarity of the gesture.
“Thanks. So how's school?” Blaine asked, continuing to sip his coffee. Blaine listened to Kurt talk about his course and his friends for the next hour, laughing and joining in with the shocked expressions as Kurt's commentary dictated.
“So enough about me, how long have you been in New York for? Do you stay in the city?” Kurt asked, realising he was monopolising the conversation and eagerly wanting to know more about how his former best friend was doing.
“I moved here about 6 months after graduation. I could have stayed and run things from Ohio but...well, it's Ohio!” Blaine laughed softly as Kurt nodded knowingly. It was no secret that both boys had hated living in Ohio. As much as they both loved going home to visit their families, their ambitions were too big for the small towns they lived in. “I actually live in Yorkville.” Blaine admitted. Kurt choked on his coffee.
“Yor...Yorkville! Fuck! Business must be booming!” Kurt spluttered, quite impressed at the address Blaine seemed embarrassed about. “Anyway, I um..I texted you this morning.”
“Yeah, I got it. I was gonna reply, honest, I just....I just didn't know how to.” Blaine said, fidgeting with the lid of his now empty coffee cup. “I was actually going to call you this weekend. I was going to see if you wanted to maybe meet up or get a coffee but I guess that's redundant now” he laughed, smiling when he elicited a similar response from Kurt.
“Perhaps. Dinner?” Kurt suggested. Blaine gasped, not exactly knowing how to respond but desperately wanting to. He nodded silently. Checking his watch, Kurt realised he was now late for dinner with Rachel. Promising to text or call later that night, he left Blaine outside the coffee shop, both grateful that the rain had now stopped. Blaine leant against the wall as he watched Kurt make his way to the crossing, turning and smiling widely when he noticed Blaine watching him. Raising an arm to wave, Blaine returned the gesture and grinned happily. Blaine headed for the subway station feeling happier and lighter than he had in months. He was going for dinner with Kurt.
Hi DJ
Well, it's been a busy week for Kurt Hummel! I managed to get both of my essays done with plenty of time to spare, cleaned the apartment from top to bottom and re-organised my closet and I still attended all my classes to tutor groups! I rock this week!
Rachel has been a total diva this week. She got a callback for an audition for Grease and has decided that she is now Sandy – everything is being done with a blond wig! You would think after the whole Fanny Brice debacle she'd tone down the attitude but obviously being fired from one show just wasn't enough!
Tina & Mike got engaged at New Years! I'm so happy for them but it's just reminding me that I'm alone – still! Rachel has of course tried to take over the planning of the wedding but Tina told her to back off of they'd marry in California and ban her from the state!!! That soon shut her up!
On a slightly related but not really note – I texted Blaine. I know, I know – I probably shouldn't have but I've been thinking about him a lot recently. I knew he was in New York but Santana said she'd heard that he was living in Westerville so I didn't know what to believe. Imagine my surprise though when I bumped into him this afternoon – literally!!! I was wrestling with my umbrella and crashed into him on the street! We went for coffee and oh god DJ it was so awkward to start with! He did tell me that he is living in the city and – get this – he owns his own company!!!!! Of all the things I could have imagined Blaine doing with his life, I can honestly say that's not one of them!
The Blaine I used to know wanted nothing to do with business. He was all Katy Perry and dancing on furniture with his bowties. He looked good today though – no bowties and even though he was in pants and a polo he looked so good. Poor guy was soaked through. We talked for ages and although at first it seemed a little strained we both relaxed after a while. I invited him out to dinner which seemed to shock him a bit. I really want to get to know him again. He was my best friend before he was ever my boyfriend and even if we can't be lovers again I really miss my best friend. I'm just hoping that he gives me a chance to explain everything. I forgave him so long ago and he needs to know that. Breaking up with Blaine was the worst thing I ever did. I only hope he can forgive me.
Rachel's on her way so I need to get ready for dinner. If Blaine doesn't call or text me by the time I get home tonight then I'm gonna bit the bullet and call him.
TTFN (Peace out just didn't feel right!)
