Blaine slowly raised his hands to show that he meant no harm. He looked passed the gun to the man holding it. He was fairly young and clearly distressed , late twenties to early thirties, his shaggy, disheveled hair was about the same color as Kurt's, and his green eyes were red and tired.
“Whats your name?” He demanded.
“I'm Blaine.” He said cautiously, “What's yours?”
“It's none of your damn business!” Kurt shot Blaine a what are thinking? look and the latter fought the urge to shrug, he was just trying to be polite, it wasn't like he'd ever had to converse with a man with a gun and his boyfriend as a hostage before.
“Okay, okay.” he said calmly, “That's cool. I'm just here to find out what you need.”
The man glanced around nervously before grabbing Blaine by his shirt and dragging him towards a door. Kurts hand clenched into fists so tight the skin almost broke. It was physically hard to make himself sit back and not follow Blaine. Blaine didn't even risk another glance at Kurt, instead, he allowed the man to drag him into a room that was used as a study area for students and lock the door. The love of Kurt's life was now alone, in a locked room, with a man holding a deadly weapon. Kurt wanted to kick and scream to be let in, to be with Blaine, but he couldn't. He clenched his fists tighter and never took his eyes off the door.
As soon as the door was locked, the man began pacing back and forth while Blaine just stood there, heart pounding and unsure what to do. Eventually, the man pointed to a chair with his gun, “Sit down.”
Blaine obeyed. There were still papers and pencils from the last students that were in here. Probably the same kids who are being held against their will right now... he thought ...all they wanted to do was come to the library and study. They'll never be able to go anywhere now without worrying that some lunatic is going to barge in with a gun and threaten their lives.
“So,” He started off, “How do you want to do this? Do you want me to write them down or.....”
The man looked at him before scratching his head with the gun and turning towards the wall.
Blaine swallowed, “What is it that you want?”
There was a sound, any human would recognize it because we've all made this sound at least once in our lives.
A sob.
The man was crying.
He put his free arm against the wall and then rested his head on his arm, the arm holding the gun hung, loosely at his side
“I want my wife and daughter back.”
Blaine's jaw dropped slightly, he didn't know what to say.
“Four moths ago today, they were killed right in front of this library. We were um-....my daughter loved to read, you couldn't keep her from a book for more than ten minutes.” he laughed slightly, “So we always took her here when something special happened, good grades, birthday, whatever....and she was so happy...” his voice caught. He paused and turned around, not looking at Blaine, “So, one evening we came, just before the library closed, to get this book hat she'd been begging for. If I could go back, I would tell her 'no' a million times just so I could still be holding her in my arms today.”
“We walked out of the library and...this man...this monster.” his eyes filled with rage and hatred, “He came out of nowhere and he-” he cut off mid sentence, choking on the words, “the police never caught him. They said that even they did capture the man described there wouldn't be enough evidence to lock him up.” he leaned forward and placed his hands on the table, still not looking at Blaine, breathing heavy and eyes glowing with hate, “I screamed, argued, and begged but they just kept repeating over and over again 'they system is the system'!” he slammed his hands on the table. “DAMN IT!”
Blaine jumped, unsure of what to do, unsure if he could even speak, “Um, sir?” His voice was small.
The pinched the bridge of his nose, “Ugh, Nick. Just call me Nick.”
“Okay then, Nick. I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through. Losing the love of my life is too horrible to even think about.” his eyes flashed to the door before he could catch himself. Kurt, “You deserve answers and justice but, this, holding people against their will...it won't bring them back.”
“YOU THINK I DON'T KNOW THAT?! YOU THINK I HAVEN'T SPENT EVERY WAKING MOMENT OF THE LAST FOUR MONTSH REALIZING THAT NOTHING IS EVER GOING TO BRING THEM BACK?”
Blaine sat in silence as Nick visibly tried to calm himself.
“No,” Nick spoke after a bit, shaking his head, “I'm not doing this to try and bring them back. I'm doing this for justice. I went against the system.” he chuckled and got a certain gleam in his eyes, Blaine could finally see how unstable this man was, “I tracked down that monster, found out where he lives. And I'm not letting anyone go until those incompetent imbeciles in blue go over there and arrest him.”
