It was late and Blaine was tucking his children into bed, Elizabeth was looking more and more like Kurt every single day and it made his heart ache. He sat with his children and read them their story, just like he used to do and he’d kiss their heads when they were asleep, turn on their nightlights and turn off the main light before leaving the room. But that didn’t stop him every night from crying himself to sleep but this time, he was heard.
“Papa?” Elizabeth said from the door, rubbing her eyes and wearing her Disney Princess pajamas.
“What’s wrong sweetheart?” Blaine asked, pulling back the bed covers for his daughter to come in with him. He pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her when she was in and warm.
“I can’t sleep.” She said.
“Me either pumpkin. What’s keeping you awake?” Blaine asked, stroking her soft hair.
“Daddy.”
“Same here.”
“I saw him today and now he’s not here.”
Blaine frowned and looked at his child in confusion, he did read somewhere that young children do have a connection to the supernatural, just like animals sometimes.
“You saw him? Where?”
“He was playing with me, he spoke to me.”
“What did he say darling?”
“Take care of Papa, he needs you and Daddy said he loves all us lots and lots.”
Blaine couldn’t help but cry, his Kurt left him a message, god he wished he could speak to him right now because he needed him so badly.
“Papa, don’t cry.” Elizabeth tried wiping the tears with her hands. “I take care of you.”
Blaine held his youngest close to him as he cried softly, falling asleep with her not long later.
Blaine had asked Rachel to babysit while he went out the following night, he had heard of a group that meets at the local community centre so he went there. He pushed the door open and shuffled inside.
“Come in, don’t be shy.” The woman at the front of the room said, she was elderly but no older than sixty-five. “Are you here for the readings?”
Blaine nodded, he thought that maybe she could get through to Kurt and get a spiritual reading. If Kurt were here, he’d laugh at him and say all this wasn’t real and Blaine didn’t usually believe it either but if he could talk to Kurt, then he’d try anything. He sat down at the back and watched as three people had readings from a family member.
“Right, I’m looking for a Blaine,” The woman said. “A Blaine Hummel-Anderson.”
Blaine’s heart skipped a beat and stood up. “That’s me. Is it my husband?”
“He says his name is Kurt and yes he is your husband.”
And Blaine couldn’t help but cry, he hated crying and the fact that he had done it so much.
“Is he okay? Is my baby okay?” He asked, his hands shaking like crazy.
“He says he’s fine and that he can see that you’re not but he watches you and the children all the time. It kills him that he can’t talk to you all the time, hug you or kiss you. He can just stand there. But he doesn’t blame you, Blaine for what happened. He said, he would do it a million times over and still die to protect you. He knows that you don’t want to move on and he’s okay with that because he’d be insanely jealous if you did. But he wants you to be happy and that means if you ever found anyone then as long as you were happy then so would he be. He loves you so much Blaine, he just told me to tell you, he loves you so much and he always will.”
“I love him so much too. I just want to hold him again, tell him I love him.”
“But you are, he can hear you Blaine. He’s right here now. He wants to hold you so badly but he knows that he can’t, not for many many years. He said, that he’s going to be with you, every single step of the way until you die a very old man and he’ll be right there to greet you when you enter the spiritual world.”
“Elizabeth looks so much like him, it hurts to look at her.” Blaine said, feeling sick at himself for it being true.
“He said that he understands and if it was reversed then he’d feel the same about Andrew but you will get over it, you will start being okay again. Maybe not great but you’ll be okay. He also says to make sure that his side of the bed is always empty so he can lie in it and watch you while you sleep.”
“I promise baby, I promise that you will get your side of the bed so we can be together again even if I can’t see you.”
“I have to go to the next person now. Kurt says he loves you and he misses you.”
“I love you too, Kurt. I love you so much and miss you more than I could ever imagine.”
When she declared that Kurt had gone, Blaine got to his feet and left the room. He leaned against the wall outside and cried. He had gotten to speak to Kurt, even if it wasn’t directly to him; he still got to speak to him. He said to Rachel that he’d only be an hour so he had to get home to his children; he had to do the night routine because it was their thing. When he got home, he thanked Rachel for everything before doing the bedtime routine. He was exhausted so it had to be a short story that night and it seemed that the kids were tired too. Once they were asleep, Blaine went to his bedroom, stripping and putting on Kurt’s pajamas and slid into bed. He lay there with his eyes shut trying to wait for sleep to take over.
“Blaine...” He heard in a whisper, his eyes shot open and he gasped.
