“Hey.” Kurt said, going to his locker, leaning against it and looking back Blaine at the next locker. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, why wouldn’t it be?” Blaine asked, putting up his football pictures and decorating his locker.
“It’s just that you haven’t really... Blaine, we made a promise that when we got to high school we’d remain best friends. I get it, you’re nervous but why are you ignoring me and/or sitting with other people?”
“Because I want to make new friends, did you ever think about that Kurt?” Blaine snapped, slamming his locker and storming off to his new friends. The cool kids.
Kurt had thought about that, he was fine with Blaine making new friends but he didn’t want to be pushed to the side. He thought he was Blaine’s best friend. Seeing Blaine go off with the kids that bullied him, it hurt him. There was Puck, Santana, Brittany, Finn, Karofsky and the rest of the Cheerios and football team.
Over time, Blaine got more and more different. After school it was like the school Blaine never existed, they were best friends and had fun but at school, Blaine was a popular kid. Things didn’t get better for Kurt; they only got worse when the dumper tossing, slushies and pushing into lockers started. It wasn’t Blaine doing it but it was his friends and sometimes Blaine was there. He’d shoot Kurt and apologetic look and then he’d run off with his new friends, forcing laughs, and after school he’d apologise.
There was something that caught Kurt’s attention, there was the sound of music and it made him follow. There was a girl singing, she had an amazing voice but her fashion sense was a cross between an old woman and a child.
“Funny, did you hear that? Funny
Yeah the guy said, “Honey
You’re a funny girl”
That’s me, I just keep them
In stitches, doubled in half
And though I may be all wrong for the guy
I’m good for a laugh
I guess it’s not funny
Life is far from sunny
When the laugh is over
And the joke’s on you”
And then the girl stopped singing and smiled at Kurt. She swished her hair over her shoulder and walked over to Kurt who was sitting at the back of the auditorium and held out her hand.
“Hello there dear fan, my name is Rachel Berry, future star of the stage. And you are...?”
“Oh, I’m Kurt. Kurt Hummel. You have an amazing voice.” He smiled, shaking her hand.
“I know, I have the best in Lima but I can only get better. Can you sing?”
“Yeah I can. I have a very different voice, I assure you, you’ve heard nothing like me.” Kurt said smugly.
“Okay then, give it your best show. Wow me. No one can wow me.” Rachel grabbed Kurt’s hand and pulled him up and onto the stage. “Sing for me.”
Kurt took a deep breath and closed his eyes, picturing Blaine in the audience since he was the only one who had really heard him sing and love it. He opened his eyes and was in the zone.
“Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
Of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!
It's time to try defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye I am defying gravity
And you won’t bring me down!
I'm through accepting limits
'cause someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I'll never know!
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
Well, if that's love
It comes at much too high a cost!
I'd sooner buy defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye I'm defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
And you won’t bring me down!
I'd sooner buy defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye I'm defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
And you won't bring me down!
bring me down!
ohh ohhh ohhhh!”
Kurt finished the song with a high note and a proud smile on his face. Rachel applauded him and skipped over to him.
“You have to join the New Directions! They’re a glee club and there is only a few of us at the moment because it’s a new group but we can always use new members to sway in the background behind me.” Rachel said in a very matter of fact voice.
“I don’t “sway in the background” but I’m in.”
“Great! Come on, let’s go and introduce you to Mr. Schue! You might have to sing that again but you’re good enough.”
Rachel led Kurt out of the auditorium, unaware that they were being watched by Blaine and the football team. Blaine was trying to hide a proud smile while trying to ignore the guys mimicking Kurt’s voice behind him.
“What a fag!” One of them said.
“Hey! He’s my best friend. Leave him alone.” Blaine snapped.
“Has someone got a crush?” Puck nudged his shoulder while laughing.
“No! I’ve known him all my life and he’s my best friend. I don’t want people to be mean to him.” Blaine was trying to hide his blush. Of course he had a crush. Who wouldn’t have a crush on Kurt?
“Hey lady!” Kurt walked faster to keep away from the bullies. He didn’t want his so far good day to be ruined by them.
“Lady Hummel!” Someone shouted louder. Kurt heard heavy footsteps coming closer and closer until he fell and went flying into the lockers. It hurt so badly and his back was in so much pain. He sat there for a minutes before he was pulled to his feet by Karofsky and Puck, they made it seem like they were his friend as they walked but once they got outside, he went straight into the dumpster.
He sat in there, in his brand new designer outfits, until they went. That way, he couldn’t get pushed back in. Kurt was just about to get up when a nice, red slushie was poured over his head.
Later that day there was a knock at the Hummel door and since his dad was working, it just left Kurt to answer it. It was Blaine.
“Hey.” Kurt smiled, staring into Blaine’s eyes.
“Hi.” Blaine smiled back, staring into Kurt’s eyes.
“Come in.” Kurt held the door open so his best friend could walk inside.
“I’m sorry about not being able to stop the guys from doing all this stuff to you. I’ve tried but you don’t help yourself.”
“I don’t help myself?!”
“No. You dress like that and then you’re in that glee club.” Blaine was just trying to help Kurt. Without help, how can he stop getting bullied?
“So I get bullied because I have a fashion sense and because I’m in “that glee club? What is wrong with you?”
“Kurt, that club is social suicide. I don’t want my best friend getting bullied for being in that club and because...” Blaine stopped, he bit his lip nervously while Kurt looked like he was about to explode.
“Oh I’m your best friend now?! So I can only be your best friend outside of school where I’m not the lady freak? And because of what?”
“People think you’re gay, Kurt.”
“This is so stupid.” Kurt said quietly to himself.
“I know, that’s what I said. So I think you should quit glee.”
“No, not because of that. You’re just like all the other people in this cowpat place. I am gay Blaine and if you have a problem with it then obviously we can’t be friends anymore. Now get out.” Kurt’s face was red and he held the door with a tight grip that his knuckles had gone white.
“Kurt?” Blaine had no idea that Kurt was gay. He wanted to apologise and take everything back but Kurt looked so angry and upset. He thought he should give him some space.
“Get out!” Kurt shouted, tears in his eyes and so much hurt in his voice.
Blaine nodded and walked out of the door, as soon as he was outside it, Kurt slammed it hard. Blaine sighed heavily before returning to his own house, filled with so much regret and he had no idea how to make it up to Kurt.
