Blaine looked down at Kurt, who looked so happy he could explode at the thought of them living together. Yeah, he was going to do it tonight. Oh god.. he needed to get ready beforehand… how would he distract Kurt enough for him to do that? “So, by the looks of it, you want to sit here and think about being married?” Blaine teased, planting a kiss on Kurt’s neck.
“We could, i just love the thought of it. I think about it and i get butterflies in my tummy.” He smiled, he smiled wider as Blaine kissed his neck. When Blaine pulled away Kurt swivelled round so he was lying down with his head on Blaine’s lap. He smiled up at him.
“Hey, I was kissing that.” Blaine teased, running his hand along Kurt’s neck. His hand went up into Kurt’s hair, playing with it as Kurt’s head laid in his lap. He hoped Kurt wouldn’t notice the box in his pocket. “It is a nice thought…” Blaine agreed, grinning down at Kurt. “Are you saying you want to play house?”
“If you want to kiss it, you are more than welcome to.” He smiled about to sit up when Blaine began playing with his hair. His skin on his neck tingled where Blaine’s hand was. “Now you’ve suggested it, it doesn’t sound like a bad idea.” He grinned.
Blaine laughed. “All right, let’s play house. I haven’t actually played house since I was four or so…. do I don’t really remember how it works.” Blaine said with a shrug, leaning down to where his face was hovering over Kurt’s. Kurt raised his head as if asking for a kiss. “Nuh uh, Hummel. I came for your neck, remember?” Blaine teased, planting a kiss on Kurt’s neck before leaning back up in the normal position.
Kurt smiled as Blaine kissed his neck, his favorite spot. He took one of Blaine’s hands and started playing with it. “House is very easy, its role-playing. What do you remember?” He asked before kissing his hand.
“Hmm…. I remember I was always either the dad or the pet, depending on who I played with.” Blaine said with a shrug. He smiled as Kurt played with and kissed his hand. “I didn’t like being the pet, I remember that, and for some reason being the dad was always weird for me because I never really liked who played the mom…” Blaine looked down at Kurt. “Did you ever play house?”
“I did, erm i played with my mom and then she died, my dad played with me once or twice but he was never into it, he tried. So i played by myself.” Kurt shrugged his shoulders looking at his hands playing with Blaine’s.
Blaine watched as Kurt talked, and bent down to kiss his forehead when he was done. “You’re going to have to tell me how it’s done then. I don’t remember it that well.” Blaine said with a smile, his face still hovering over Kurt’s. He smiled down at him until their eyes met, when the smile transformed into a grin.
“When i was younger and i didn’t know that i was gay, i always used to see other people play. And there was always a nice ‘normal’ family, you know a mom, dad and the kids. But I never saw a family with two dads, i mean i saw step dads but not two real dads. I think people used to avoid it because it wasn’t ‘normal’ but i always wanted someone to play the second dad, no one would.” His eyes met Blaine’s. “You know how to role-play right? Its acting thats all it is and i know you can do that. You just have to pretend that we’re married and this...” He looked around the room before looking back into Blaine’s eyes. “is our house.”
Blaine melted when Kurt told his story about playing house. “My friend and I tried that one time. I liked it so much better, girls were just so dramatic and demanding and downright annoying. My friend liked it less, so I only got to play the way I wanted once. I didn’t like being the dad anymore, so I just played the dog. Which is pretty fitting, right?” Blaine said, smiling, and giving Kurt a long kiss. When he broke away, he said “Alright, acting. I can do that. But wouldn’t this be more like rehearsing?”
“I can picture you playing the dog, you make the most adorable puppy.” He laughed. Kurt returned the long kiss and smiled at Blaine. “If you want to call it rehearsing, i was thinking more along the lines of improvising…”
“But improvisation is based on not knowing what is going to happen. We know that this is going to happen one day.” Blaine said with a smile and another, much longer kiss than before. “At least, I hope it will.” He leaned back and propped Kurt up so that he was now sitting on his lap. “Right, do you want me to be the dog or what…” Blaine teased, wrapping an arm around Kurt.
“Fine, we simply just continue as we are but married.” He smiled before being pulled into an even longer kiss. “Hey it will, i’m not going anywhere just like i told Jack earlier, i’m here forever actually until my contract runs out, so that gives us time to get married.” He joked, he was now sitting on Blaine’s lap. Kurt laughed. “You can be whatever you wanna be baby.”
“When does your contract run out?” Blaine asked with a pout. Kurt still didn’t feel the box in his pocket, thank the lord. Or so he hoped. “I’ll be the second dad you never had.” Blaine said, leaning his head onto Kurt’s shoulder. “Like I said earlier, I didn’t like being the dog.” He laughed and nuzzled his nose into Kurt’s shoulder. “What does that make you?”
“I’ll have to get back to you on that one regarding the contract.” Kurt was sat on something but he just assumed it was Blaine’s phone being pushed up by his keys. Kurt giggled when Blaine nuzzled his nose into his shoulder, his tongue ended up poking out by accident. “Well since you’re going to be the second dad i never had i suppose i’ll have to be the first dad then won’t i?” He grinned biting his lip.
“I can work with that.” Blaine said, laughing into Kurt’s shoulder. “You want to get this started then?” He asked, lifting his head from Kurt’s shoulder and looking up at the boy. He felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. “I would see who it is, but there’s something in the way…” Blaine teased as he lightly pushed Kurt off of him.
He took his phone out of his pocket. Reed. “Have you done it yet? How’d it go? Did he say yes?”
Blaine rolled his eyes and tried to keep from laughing. “Nope. Haven’t asked yet. Chill.”
Kurt was about to answer Blaine’s question when there was a vibration under him. He gave Blaine a confused look, who teased him and pushed him off his lap. Kurt chuckled softly when he saw Blaine pull out his phone. He glared at him for pushing him off, he watched as Blaine trying not to laugh at something. “Who’s that?” He asked curiously.
“Reed. He just wanted to know if I…” Blaine stopped, changing his words at the last second. “..if we had gotten to Vermont yet.” Blaine said, looking down at his phone that vibrated while he was talking.
“HURRY UP. THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME BLAINE ANDERSON. DO IT NOW. NOW. RIGHT NOW.” Blaine burst out into laughter as he responded.
“Look, I’ve got a plan, okay? And I’m sticking to it. Bye now.” He looked back up at Kurt and smiled. “So, how do you want to start this?”
While Blaine was busy being antisocial and texting Reed, Kurt got out his phone and text Tina. When he finished his text he put his phone away and ran his fingers through his hair, making sure it was still neat. He looked at the laughing texting boy next to him and smiled. “Right here is how we’re going to do this, i’m not going to tell you how to start you’re going to tell me” Kurt sat up and leaned in close to Blaine, he put his hands on Blaine’s face and closed his eyes with his fingers. He leaned closer so his chin was almost on his shoulder. “Picture us married and living together, the first scene that comes into your head we’ll do.” He whispered in his ear. “You start, i’ll follow.”
Blaine felt his eyes being shut, surprised by what was going on. He did as he was told and imagined them being married and living together. The first scene that popped into his head was him coming home after working to Kurt being home. He imagined them eating dinner together and doing the simplest things; doing the dishes, throwing foam from the soap at each other, snuggling up by the t.v, both of them tired. He imagined carrying Kurt up the stairs to their room after Kurt had fallen asleep. Blaine repeated what he imagined to Kurt, his eyes still closed. It sounded stupid, but it was the first image in his mind.
Kurt liked what he was hearing and smiled. Blaine’s eyes were still shut so he kissed his cheek. “You can open them now.” He whispered into his ear. When Blaine did, Kurt smiled at him. “I suppose you’d like dinner after working so hard all day.” He grinned hoping Blaine knew that he’d started.
Blaine looked up at Kurt, confused. He hadn’t worked at al…wait. Kurt had started never mind. “That’d be nice. But you don’t have to, we could always get a pizza or something..” Blaine rubbed the back of his neck, acting like he was tired and looked over at Kurt before closing his eyes and leaning back into the couch.
“Whatever you want my gorgeous husband.” He put emphasis on husband, he exploded inside just saying the word. “Just say what you want and when you want it and it’ll all be ready for you.” He stood behind the couch where Blaine leaned back into it. He massaged Blaine’s shoulders resting his chin on his head. “Hard day at the office?”
Blaine smiled to himself. Husband. He could get used to that term. “Let’s have lasagna. I loovvveee me some lasagna.” Blaine said, laughing. “Yeah. I had a truckload of stuff to do that I don’t normally do.” He leaned his head back to look up at Kurt. “Are you hungry? Cause we could have some lasagne soon if you want…”
“Ooooh lasagne sounds good, i’ll get that ready for you, i know how much you love lasagna.” He smiled. “I am hungry and by the sounds of your stomach so are you.” He kissed the top of Blaine’s head and made his way to the kitchen, which wasn’t hard to find.
Blaine watched as Kurt practically skipped into the kitchen, making him smile. He followed Kurt and stood in the doorway, watching as he familiarized himself with the kitchen. “Hey, today has been so… stressful. I think I’m going to take a quick walk while you make this wonderful dinner, okay?” Blaine said, smiling at Kurt. His plan was beginning to unfold.
“Sure baby if it calms you down.” He walked over and kissed Blaine. “I’ll see you soon yeah? Have a nice walk, i’ll just be here making dinner for when you get back.”
“Okay. I’ll be back.” Blaine gave Kurt a quick kiss back before walking out of the kitchen. He stood in the living room, going over the thoughts in his head. He formed a checklist and starting getting things off of it. Blanket… okay got that. Candles… got that. Guitar? Maybe? No, better not…. Extra blanket. For if Kurt gets cold. Right… got everything. “I’ll be back.” Blaine called out before taking his stuff and walking out the door.
Kurt knew how much Blaine liked lasagna so thats what he began making, he wasn’t sure how long Blaine was going to be. Kurt honestly didn’t think Blaine was serious about going out until he heard the door shut. He looked around the kitchen for things to use, luckily there was everything and the cupboards were all stacked. Someone must have been here recently to stock them.
Blaine was thankful his house in Vermont was at such an awesome location. The backyard went downhill until hitting a small, shallow river with trees outlining it. He walked over to his favorite little nook where the trees separated, giving him a place to lie down and think. Plus, this was where the fireflies came out at night. He laid the blanket down and set the candles all around it, holding it down. The extra blanket he put in the middle, just in case. Once his work was done, he pulled out his phone.
It was lucky for Kurt that he could cook otherwise Blaine would probably be ordering pizzas every night or some form of other takeaway. Kurt had made lasagne many times before so he didn’t need help from anyone or anything. Halfway through making it his phone vibrated. It was Reed.
“Hey Kurt, how’s it going?”
“Its going great, just making dinner while Blaine’s gone for a walk.”
“A walk? I thought he’d be helping you.”
“Nooo he’d probably get under my feet and i think he’d like a kitchen left.”
“That sounds like Blaine, so what you making?”
“Lasagna.”
“One of Blaine’s favorites, well have a nice night and i’ll talk to you soon.” Kurt didn’t see the point in replying so he just went on with the cooking.
Blaine dialled Reed’s number first. “Reed… hey. Yeah, I just set up…. Kurt’s in the house, cooking lasagne…..I know, it was……just letting you know that after dinner I’m gonna ask him…. right… thanks, I’ll need it….. yeah, I will. Bye.” Blaine hung up the phone and texted Carole. “Hey. Heads up: I’m gonna ask him tonight.” Carole responded with a big smiley face. He contemplated texting Rachel or Tina, but decided against it.
Blaine took one last look at his set up and made his way back up to the house. “Hey, I’m back.” He said, closing the door behind him and walking to the kitchen.
Kurt heard the door close and Blaine call through saying he was back. He smiled as Blaine entered the kitchen. “Hey nice walk? All stress gone?” He asked walking to Blaine kissing him and resting his hands on his chest.
“If it….wasn’t then, it….. is now.” Blaine said in between kisses before pulling Kurt in for a deeper kiss. They stood kissing for a few minutes before Blaine pulled back and smiled. “It smells awesome in here.” Blaine said, wrapping his arms around Kurt’s waist.
Kurt smiled against Blaine’s lips as he was pulled in for a deeper kiss, the kiss lasted a few minutes before Blaine pulled away. “I know it does, its almost ready.” He smiled, he felt Blaine’s arms wrap around his waist. Kurt wrapped his own around Blaine’s neck.
“Can’t wait.” Blaine smiled and kissed Kurt again, his hand going up to rub Kurt’s back. He pulled back again and rested his forehead against Kurt’s. A beeping sound was heard, and Blaine lifted his forehead off of Kurt’s, allowing him to unwrap himself and go to the oven.
Kurt was happy looking into Blaine’s eyes until they heard a beeping sound. He reluctantly pulled himself away from Blaine and went to the oven, taking a cloth with him to take the dish out. Once the dish was out, Kurt asked Blaine to get him two plates and set the table. By the time Blaine came back, Kurt had served up and left a little bit still in the dish incase Blaine was hungry later. He walked with Blaine to the table and sat down.
Blaine sat at the table, eating with Kurt. Dinner went by a lot quicker than Blaine expected, probably because he was nervous. They talked, they laughed, and Blaine couldn’t help but stare at the empty space on Kurt’s ring finger whenever his hand came into view. When they finished dinner, Blaine helped clear the table and began to wash the dishes, thinking about what was going to happen.
Kurt helped Blaine clear the table, as Blaine washed up he dried up and put the dishes away. He remembered what Blaine said earlier about what he imagined. So far Kurt had made dinner, now they were washing dishes together and… Kurt got a handful of foam from the soap and threw it at Blaine laughing.
Blaine was about to put another dish away when all of a sudden a handful of foam hit him on the back of the head. “Oh, it’s on Hummel.” Blaine teased, grabbing a handful of foam himself and rubbed it in Kurt’s hair, laughing as he did so. He let go of Kurt to grab some more foam.
“Bring it Anderson!” Kurt screamed and laughed when Blaine rubbed foam into his hair, he grabbed foam and rubbed it in Blaine’s face.
“This is only the beginning.” Blaine teased, grabbing more foam and rubbing it on Kurt’s neck. “Ha ha!” Blaine said, grabbing more foam and running out of the room and into the living room. “Come and get me!”
Kurt grabbed as much foam as he could before running out into the living room chasing Blaine. “Oooh i am so going to get you back for that Anderson!” He laughed, he almost caught him. He would have if Blaine hadn’t climbed over the couch.
“Can’t catch meeee!” Blaine said, climbing on top of the couch, sticking his tongue out at Kurt and flinging the foam in one of his hands at him. The foam hit him on the top of his head and Blaine laughed, jumping down off the couch and running to the opposite side of the room.
“I’m trying!” Kurt laughed, a pile of foam sat on the top of his head. He chased him, he got close enough to put the foam down Blaine’s back before running and hiding.
“Ooohhh, you’re going to pay for that one….” Blaine said, taking off his shirt and wiping off the foam. Kurt didn’t know that Blaine could see him, so he acted like he didn’t see him. “Kurt?” He asked, looking around. He was folding his shirt up into a blindfold and he snuck up behind Kurt, blindfolding him.
Kurt was laughing in his hiding spot when all of a sudden he was blindfolded. “Whoa Blaine?” he patted around trying to find him. “I can’t see”
“Come and get meeeeeeee.” Blaine whispered in Kurt’s ear before moving away from Kurt and towards the door. “I’m going outsiiiidddeee.” Blaine said, opening the door but walking over to Kurt and standing far away enough to where Kurt couldn’t feel him, but he could watch Kurt and make sure he didn’t fall.
“Outside? No fair! I don’t know my way.” Kurt said getting to his feet. He felt around for Blaine but couldn’t find him. He took a few steps forward still feeling around to make sure that he wasn’t going to walk into another wall.
“Over hereeee.” Blaine called with a smile. His hand went back into his pocket and he pulled the box out, looking at it one last time before he pulled it out for good.
Blaine put his hand on Kurt’s back and the other arm picked up his legs, sweeping him up so that he was carrying Kurt. After walking outside he set Kurt back down. “No more walls. Come find meeee.” Blaine said walking over down towards the river.
Kurt held onto Blaine tight when he was carried. When he was put down he could tell he was outside even before Blaine said. Kurt listened hard and began walking in the direction he heard Blaine’s voice. “Blaine? You haven’t run away have you?” He asked when he couldn’t hear Blaine anymore.
“I’m right here.” Blaine said as Kurt walked towards him, not seeing anything. The sun had set, and Blaine reached where he had set stuff up, beginning to light the candles. Once he was done Kurt stumbled in to where Blaine had set up, calling his name. He stood up and walked over to Kurt, not touching him but standing in front of him. “Keep looking.”
Kurt walked forward and bumped into something, he pulled his hands up and patted what was in front of him which was in fact Blaine’s chest. “Found you.” He smiled. “At least i hope its you, is it you?”
“Tarnation. You found me.” Blaine said with a laugh, wrapping Kurt into a big hug. It had gotten colder since the sun went down, but Blaine was so excited and nervous he didn’t feel a thing against his bare skin. He wouldn’t take off Kurt’s blindfold until the fireflie… yep. There they were. Now just let a few more light up… As Blaine thought this, a bunch of fireflies all lit up at once. They’re on my side, Blaine thought with a laugh. He reached behind Kurt’s head and undid the blindfold. “Look Kurt. Fireflies.”
Kurt adjusted his eyes and looked around, fireflies. His eyes widened and a large smile grew on it face, he looked at Blaine. “Fireflies? Oh my god, they’re beautiful.” He hugged Blaine tight. A firefly landed on Kurt’s arm, the arm that was joining Kurt and Blaine together. He looked from the firefly to Blaine, his smile just couldn’t get wider.
Blaine watched as a second firefly landed next to the one on their arm. Together the fireflies flew off, and Blaine looked over at Kurt who was grinning. He let his hand slip back into his pocket and make a fist around the box. “You like the fireflies? Well, watch them. You see how two fly together? That’s because they need someone to shed some light for them. Because even though they have their own light and it may shine realllllyy bright, it is never enough to keep them out of the dark. So when they fly together, they never even have to worry about the dark” Blaine paused and shifted so he was standing directly in front of Kurt. Oh god he was sounding so cheesy. He took a deep breath. You’re already in it this far Anderson, might as well keep going. “Wouldn’t it be nice if we didn’t have to worry? About the dark, I mean. I know you feel like you’ve lived there most of your life, but don’t you think you deserve not to have to worry about it anymore? I do.” Blaine took another deep breath. “I love you, and I don’t want to keep you in the dark. Ever. You deserve some light. And I was thinking that together,” He brought out the box. No going back now. “It would be as if the dark is non existent. Kurt, you’ve opened my eyes in so many different ways and have literally shown light on my life. I just..” Dropping down to one knee. “Feel like you deserve not to have to worry. About the dark. So I guess what I’m really trying to say is..” Opening the box to expose the ring. Definitely no going back now. “Kurt Hummel, will you marry me?”
