Blaine’s eyes widened as Rachel kept going, and going, and going. He was beginning to think that she had been an Energizer Bunny in another life. She finally let go of his hand, as he just continued to stare at her.
“Well, aren’t you going to introduce yourself?” Rachel chided, an appalled look gracing her features. “I mean, I know your name is Blaine, and that you work here, but that isn’t much. And I had learned that from Kurt anyways.”
Blaine didn’t know what he was supposed to tackle first: the fact that Kurt’s best friend (roommate!) was standing in front of him, introducing herself, the fact that she seemed to be certifiably insane, or the fact that Kurt apparently talked about him. The last one had him smiling, but before he could attempt a reply, Rachel had started yammering on again.
“Or maybe you don’t trust me yet? Would you like to hear more about me? My name is Rachel Barbra Berry, and before you ask, yes, I was named after the legend herself. I have two gay dads, and I didn’t meet my biological mother until high school. I have perfect pitch, and every time I ever sang for our glee club, we won. Kurt was really my only competition, as a matter of fact. Me and Kurt applied to NYADA together, and we both got accepted. He got accepted into Parsons with an amazing scholarship though, and I support his decision to pursue his fashion dreams. Also, it’s less competition for me. Not that there’s any real competition for me. I am a star.”
Every time Rachel opened her mouth, it seemed harder to open his own. In the last two minutes, he had just learned that Kurt was a singer- an amazing singer, apparently- and that he turned down a performing arts school to go to Parsons. Parsons. At least now he knew what was in Kurt’s sketchbook. He finally managed to stop staring at Rachel and miraculously learned how to speak again, partially to stop another round of ‘Rachel Berry 101’ and partially to stop looking like an idiot.
“Right, um- I’m Blaine. Which you know. I, uh, work here at the Caffeine Cave. Which you also know...”
God, Blaine never thought he would ever have trouble speaking to a girl. He had nothing to prove to her, no reason to be nervous! Although, she’d definitely tell Kurt everything about their encounter, wouldn’t she? The thought made Blaine feel even worse.
“Um… I took a couple of years off after I graduated, and I’ve just been working here, I am planning on going to school to become a music teacher though…”
“Oh! A fellow lover of the arts! How exciting!” Rachel exclaimed, even going as far as jumping in place. Was this girl for real?
“Yeah, actually I was in my own school’s choir back in high school.”
“Oh, I can’t wait to tell-”
Rachel was cut off by the opening notes of ‘Defying Gravity’ coming from her bag. “Oh, hold on one moment please!” She cried as she pulled her phone out and moved slightly away from the counter.
“Hello? What did I say last night? Obviously I’m at the- yes. No, of course not! I never said anything about- Oh come on, Kurt.”
Blaine took notice as she said Kurt’s name and tried to listen to what she was saying, but as is normally the case with one sided conversations, he had no idea what it was about.
“I’m not that stupid- I know that! I never told him that- no, you aren’t listening! I’m just going to- okay, well why don’t you just come over here- oh. Really? Well then. See you in a second!”
Rachel turned back around, smiling at Blaine. “Sorry about that! Now where were we? I think you were just going to tell me what you think of K-”
“Hello Rachel, Blaine.” Kurt appeared out of nowhere, tight-lipped and looking ready for murder. “I cannot believe you, Rachel Berry.” He hissed at his friend, before turning to Blaine and actually giving him a real smile. “Can I have my usual, please?”
Blaine smiled back, motioning to Mason, who had been unusually quiet during his whole conversation with Rachel, to make Kurt’s mocha. “How are you today, Kurt?” He asked, as he rung Kurt’s order through the cash.
Kurt shot one more glare at Rachel before he answered Blaine, “I’m doing lovely, I hope Rachel didn’t give you too much trouble this morning.”
“Hey! I did not-”
“No, no, she was fine!” Blaine exclaimed. “She told me that you-”
He was interrupted by Mason bringing Kurt’s cup over to him. Kurt grabbed it, then took a hold of Rachel’s arm, turned, and dragged her from the caf. “We have to go now, nice seeing you, bye!”
And then they were gone.
“Hey man, you interrupted me and Rachel- I was only returning the favour.” Mason laughed, running into the back room before Blaine decided to show him just how angry he was.
