Chapter 6.
Kurt lie awake in bed shaking slightly. He remembered the Karofsky incidents, he remembered going to ‘spy' on the Warbles, he remembered meeting Blaine, he remembered his Dad and Carole's wedding, but there was a conversation afterwards that he couldn't place. Everything after that was blank; nothing. He looked at Blaine, sweet, kind, Blaine, who was sleeping angelically with his thick lashes entangles together in such a beautiful way.
He should be ecstatic, he should be over the moon, but instead looking at Blaine's face just hurt him. He couldn't say anything, not yet. What was he supposed to do? Just say to him, "Oh yeah, I remember meeting you" and raise his hopes, and then shatter them with "But I don't remember dating you." No. He couldn't do that. Not yet anyway.
But isn't this lying? Is it really fair to hide the thing Blaine was waiting for the most from him? He'd been so wonderful about the whole thing. He'd been so patient, so trusting. Kurt couldn't just take advantage of that until he remembered every little thing? Or could he? Wouldn't it be for the best?
Kurt turned between both of the options for what seemed like ages. Neither seemed practical, but when Blaine began to wake up, he really didn't have a choice in the matter anymore, he made a snap decision, there was no looking back.
He felt Blaine's arms slowly wrap around him. "Kurt, are you okay, honey?" He said with his voice thick with sleep.
"Yeah...I just had a dream..."
"What about?" Blaine asked as he leant up on his elbow.
"I, just the few days after my Dad's heart attack." He lied flawlessly. "It's all kind of coming back to me in dreams now."
"Kurt! That's so close to us!" Blaine squealed, as he threw his arms around Kurt's slender neck. "You're nearly there; promise you'll tell me every single new thing you remember. Promise?"
"I promise." Kurt gulped. Well now he felt bad about it.
-
The boy's woke up the next morning, well, Blaine woke up. Kurt hadn't really every gone back to sleep. Kurt was being slowly eaten alive by guilt. How was he supposed to lie to Blaine? He'd already broken a promise by not telling him. How was Blaine going to react to this? He decided the only way to do this was wait until his next flashback. Then he's say they came as one. That'd be easier, Blaine would never have to know,
He felt Blaine roll onto him slowly. "Morning." He smiled softly. "How'd you sleep?"
"Like a baby."
And he'd lied again. Great job, genius.
"Mmh, same here." Blaine murmured, placing a kiss to Kurt's hairline as he did so.
Kurt relaxed into Blaine's touch, but not for very long, because Blaine got up and fled the room, telling Kurt to stay exactly where he was.
Ten minutes later, Blaine re-entered the room with a plate piled high of white chocolate chip pancakes. "Kurrtiiieeee!" He sang as he climbed into bed with the two trays.
"Blaineeeyyy?" Kurt tried to sing back.
"Blainers." Blaine corrected with a wink as he handed Kurt a tray.
"Blainers." Kurt noted. "Now, Blainers, you didn't have to do this. It's too much, honestly." Honestly. Was Blaine trying to make him feel awful about the fact he was deceiving him?
"Nu-uh. I didn't make you breakfast for 2 weeks. I missed it. Please, let me. I need to do everything with you as normal, and maybe you'll remember sooner." He stated simply.
"Okay." Kurt agreed, suppressing his overwhelming levels of guilt. Just a few days, he reminded himself. Just a few days more of lying to Blaine. Lying. The word stung him to his core, as he stared into Blaine's open, honest eyes. No. He could do this. Wasn't it for the better?
-
Two days passed and Blaine and Kurt had not separated once. Blaine had called and explained to NYU that Kurt wouldn't be back to himself for a while, and he had to look after him. To Kurt's dismay, he couldn't remember anything more. So he kept his secret hidden from Blaine. But now, the guilt was completely overwhelming every single part of his body. He needed out, he needed a break from Blaine's wonderful personality and...everything. He decided to talk to Rachel. He knew she'd probably know what to do. She'd surely screwed up enough to be good at advice by now.
"I'm uh, I'm going to go to Finn and Rachel's." Kurt said, getting up from the sofa.
"Oh..." Blaine said, clearly disappointed.
"What's wrong?" Kurt asked.
"Did I do something wrong?" Blaine asked with worry thick in his voice.
"No! God, no! I just...uh...need to pick up some more stuff!"
"Okay. Are you sure because-"
"Jesus, Blaine! I'm fine to walk up two flights of stairs on my own!" Kurt said slightly louder than intended.
Blaine looked truly hurt. Kurt felt instantly guilty and knelt down in front of him. "Sorry. I didn't mean to yell at you." He said sincerely.
"I'm sorry for being clingy, I just thought, when you said you were heading back to theirs, I thought you meant for good, I thought I'd messed up or you'd given up on remembering."
"I'll be half an hour, tops. Okay?"
"Okay." Blaine agreed,
-
"You remembered, and you didn't tell him?" Rachel demanded.
"Kurt! This is Blaine! He's literally putting his life on hold for you at the moment, waiting for any sign that you'll remember and you're lying to him!" Finn joined in. "This isn't okay, Kurt! You need to fix this!"
"How?" I can't just run over to him and admit that I'm lying!"
"Well what do you plan on doing then?" Rachel asked, only slightly calmer than Finn had been.
"Well, when I next remember something new, I could just tell him I remembered all of this, and that too. He'll never know." Kurt pointed out.
"I'm not sure about this, Kurt. I think this could go very bad, very fast." Finn warned.
"Finn, it's not like I can remember us dating, I just remembered the first few days we met, that's it. I can't just raise his hopes and not fully meet them." Kurt whined.
"Do what you want, Kurt." Finn said angrily, "You're my brother, but Blaine is my best friend here in New York. I don't like the fact you're hurting him."
"I'm sorry, Kurt. But I've got to agree with Finn." Rachel chimed in. "I think this would really hurt him, you made a promise to him! That means something, Kurt!"
Kurt sighed. "So , what should I do? Just barge in there and tell him that I've lied?"
"Better than him finding out some other way." Finn said with a danger to his voice.
"What do you mean by that?" Kurt asked suspiciously.
"I mean, that if you don't get your act together and tell him, I will!" Finn yelled. Dammit, he'd worked so hard to get these two back together, he always wanted to have their backs whenever, and now Kurt was ruining all of his work!
"Finn!" Rachel and Kurt both yelled. "You can't do that!" Kurt choked out, tears pricking at his eyes.
"Really, then get a move on. You've got three day's Kurt." Said Finn. "Now go and tell him!"
Kurt left the apartment, slamming the door behind him. He could hear Rachel beginning to yell at Finn for what he'd said. Kurt calmed himself down and tried to enter his and Blaine's apartment with a level head.
"Blaine?" He called out as he opened the door.
"Hi, Kurt!" Blaine smiled, as he emerged from the bedroom. "Did you get your stuff?"
Shit. Kurt thought. "Uh...no? I...I uh..."
"What's up Kurt?" Blaine asked, taking the man's hand and leading him to the sofa where they sat.
"Nothing." He lied. Again.
"Why are you lying to me?" Blaine asked softly. "You can-"
"I'm not lying!" Kurt jumped up from his seat on the sofa.
"Kurt you're clearly-"
"DON'T YOU DARE FUCKING ACCUSE ME OF LYING!" Kurt yelled as he stormed into the bedroom, slamming the door behind him.
Well that was odd. Blaine thought.
