Chapter 1.
Blaine came back home from NYU and gently threw his bag onto the table. "Kurt, I'm home!" He sang as entered the kitchen to get a drink. As he opened the fridge he felt slender arms slide around his waist.
"Hey." Kurt murmured into Blaine's ear from behind.
Blaine turned around in Kurt's arms and kissed him briefly. "Hey." He smiled.
"How was your day?" Kurt asked as he let go of Blaine.
"Good thanks." Blaine answered pouring them both a glass of apple juice. Kurt rolled his eyes at the choice but drank anyway. He felt a buzz in his pocket and his heart filled with dread, not now.
Have you done it yet?-D
Kurt gulped. He couldn't do it, it was too hard.
Break up with him lady boy before I break your face.-D
Kurt felt a shiver over his spine as he began to shake slightly. "Kurt, honey, what's wrong?" Blaine asked, his eyebrows knitted together in worry and confusion.
Another text appeared.
I can SEE you both. Do it now, fag. I WILL kill you. Do you understand? Do it.
A single tear rolled down Kurt's cheek as he looked up at Blaine, who immediately ran to Kurt and wiped the tear away. He then kissed Kurt on the forehead, having to tiptoe slightly to do so (which never failed to amuse Kurt), then took Kurt's hand gently in his. "What's happened. Who's texting you?"
Kurt just shook his head. He couldn't exactly say, "Oh some random guy, who's now threatening to kill me and you because we're gay." So instead he just went for it, he had to protect them, "I'm breaking up with you."
Blaine's whole world stopped in that moment and everything came slowly crumbling down around him. This couldn't be happening. Why? Everything had been so so so perfect. Kurt had re-auditioned for NYADA the year Blaine graduated and they were at the end of their second year of University. They had an apartment in the middle of New York, Blaine had a job performing once a week at the local coffee shop and Kurt was an extra on "Wicked." Nothing could have been better. "Kurt, why...?" The tears were falling down his face slowly as he released himself from their embrace.
Kurt shook his head and sighed. "I, uh, already moved my stuff out earlier today."
Blaine looked around the apartment and, to his word, everything Kurt owned was no longer there. "No, no! Kurt, please, can we work this out? Please don't leave me. Please..." Blaine's voice was quiet, holding in all the tears the pain of the breakup was causing him. It felt like a sharp knife was implanted right into his heart and at every look at Kurt's face the knife got deeper.
"I love you. You'll never know how much I love you, which is why I have to do this, to keep us safe. I can't explain why, but you need to just trust me this is for the better." Kurt was now crying too as he raised his hand to stroke Blaine's cheek ever so slightly, staring into his eyes, taking advantage of every second he could in their last moment together.
"Don't go...I love you too, so much, please don't leave me, Kurt. Don't go." Blaine held Kurt's hand tighter to his cheek and looked back into his eyes, begging him silently not to leave.
Kurt leaned in and kissed Blaine gently. When he pulled away he kept their foreheads together. "Don't do this..." Blaine whispered.
"I have to." Kurt replied as he kissed Blaine chastely again. "Thank you Blaine, you saved me three years ago when you stepped into my life. You're the most amazing thing that has been and will ever be in my life. So now, I'm saving you, by stepping out of yours."
"Kurt..." Blaine chocked out. But Kurt had already walked out the door.
-
Kurt left the apartment with tears streaming down his face, he ran to the hotel he had booked for the time being without noticing the footsteps following him closely behind. As he turned into an alley he thought he heard something so he stopped and that was when it happened. "Oi! Fag!" Kurt heard the voice booming around him.
"I did it! Now fuck off!" Kurt screamed back, turning to face Dan, standing there in his hoodie, holding a brick.
"You know what? Actually just because you're no longer dating the other gay idiot, you're queerness still OFFENDS ME!"
"What are you going to do, Dan? You can't hit the gay out of me!"
"I can try."
There was a bang as the brick hit Kurt's head and then blackout.
-
Kurt opened his eyes to the bright lights of a hospital four days later, there was a soft and constant beeping in the background and his head hurt, a lot. He turned to his bedside to see his Dad, Carole, and Finn all staring at him, looking overly emotional. "Where am I?" He asked.
"The hospital. You got hit in the head by a brick. We pressed charges and the guy who did it's in prison. You're safe now."
Kurt took in the information. "Okay. Why are Finn and his Mum here?"
Burt looked at Kurt and then to the nurse, "He's your stepbrother and she's your step Mum." Burt informed him becoming a little worried.
"Since when?" Kurt laughed almost.
"About three years ago, Kurt what's the last thing you remember?"
"Uhm, yesterday! I got back to school after summer break for my junior year! You're dating Carole, and Finn and Rachel just went public!"
Carole gasped as tears formed in her eyes, "Kurt, honey, that was more than three years ago."
"What?" Kurt asked again. "I'm so confused. That was yesterday."
"No, yesterday, you left your New York apartment you share with Blaine and got attacked!" Burt said becoming angry at the fact his poor boy was in such a bad state.
"Who's Blaine? Why am I living in New York? Dad! I'm so confused!" Kurt said beginning to cry.
"What do you mean who's Blaine? Blaine's your boy-" Burt began to say.
"Don't worry." Finn interrupted, handing Burt the text he'd received from Blaine telling him they'd broken up. "We'll explain it all later."
-
Burt paced back and forward down the corridor outside Kurt's room as the nurse explained the situation to him.
"We scanned his head and everything seems to be intact, however his memory loss is quite severe, he'll begin to remember things sooner or later, but it could be months before everything is back to normal."
"Okay." Burt nodded. He could deal with that, it was going to be okay. As the nurse left, Finn turned to Burt.
"I was going through Kurt's phone to find out any information and I know why he dumped Blaine now. The guy who attacked him, Dan, told him to break up with Blaine."
"Well why the hell would Kurt do what that piece of shit said?!" Burt fumed.
"Evidently, he told Kurt he was going to kill them both if he didn't." Finn said quietly trying not to over upset Burt, which, obviously, didn't work.
"WHAT?!" Burt yelled. "Get me the police on the phone, NOW!"
Finn handed Burt his phone and the older man left to call the police, Finn looked into Kurt's hospital room, he was awake but he looked completely confused, it was going to be an agonising wait for this to sort out.
-
The light fell from the curtains onto Blaine who, even through Kurt wasn't there, had stuck religiously to his side of the bed. He looked over to the empty side and sighed, it had been three days and he had heard nothing from Kurt, he rubbed his eyes and found they were stiff from the tears that had fallen last night. He got up and remade the bed, taking extra care on the space Kurt used to lay on.
Once he was washed and dressed he found himself on the piano singing to the air, he still sat to one side like he always had because whenever he used to play, Kurt would sit next to him. Eventually he managed to snap himself out of his pity party and take full seat on the piano stool.
His day continued like that, doing his side of everything and then realising he had to fill Kurt's part too. The house seemed almost empty without the countertenor's voice and laugh. Everything he did seemed to have that little piece missing that Blaine swore he'd never be able to fill again.
-
Five days later and Kurt was out of the hospital and looking almost himself, minus the fourteen stitches and excessive bandages. He had been taken back to Finn and Rachel's apartment for the time being and they had collected his things from the hotel he had left them in. "Hey, nice apartment guys!" Kurt beamed walking in.
"Uh, thanks. You've been here before, Kurt." Rachel stated, then got elbowed by Finn in the ribs.
"Sorry...I just can't quite remember these things at the moment." Kurt said with a sad smile. Finn and Rachel nodded in agreement and Kurt continued to look around the apartment.
"Kurt, you can go and get unpacked, these are your boxes, just set them up in the guest room." Rachel smiled, pointing to a pile of boxes mostly labelled "Clothes." Inside of the room with the door wide open. Kurt nodded and went to begin unpacking.
When the door was closed and Kurt was out of earshot Rachel cornered Finn. "Finn!" She hissed. "Remind me again why we have hidden every single photo and deleted every text from Blaine?"
"Because! He need to remember him on his own. We can tell him the rest, but Blaine needs to come from him. How would you feel if I hit my head and I only loved you because I was told I did?" Finn hissed back, careful not to let Kurt hear.
"Fine." Rachel sighed, "But if they're broken up how are we going to get him to remember?"
"Trust me." Said Finn. "I have a plan."
-
A week had passed since the break up and Blaine had his gig at the coffee shop tonight, but instead he'd found himself cancelling for the second week in a row before he even knew what he was doing. He just couldn't bear to get up in front of all those people and not see Kurt in the front row for the first time ever. He sat at home in front of the television watching Harry met Sally and finding himself wanting to bawl because that was his and Kurt's movie and now Kurt wasn't even there.
An hour of the film had passed when his phone rang, it was Finn. "Dude!" Finn said without even waiting for a response. "Where are you?"
"At home why?" Blaine answered honestly, becoming confused.
"You're like half an hour late for your show, man!"
"Finn, I cancelled, I just- I can't do it. I can't perform without Kurt in the front row looking at me!"
"Well, he was here but he just left because- oh never mind. The point is, be there next week on time, I'll make sure he stops by, just go with whatever he says okay?"
Blaine was even more confused now, he took a minute to get over the initial shock that Kurt had come to watch him perform, but then was hit by the fact Finn seemed on edge and was acting like he was tricking Kurt into this. "Finn, I-"
"Just do it, trust me, okay man?"
"Fine, see you next week."
"Bye!" Blaine hung up the phone and continued to pay half attention to the movie as he tried to sort out what the phone call could have meant.
