Chapter 2: Get Away From All We Know

Kurt let out a terrified scream as he plummeted farther and farther down the dark void, clutching on to the rabbit boy’s hand for dear life. The boy tilted his head to the side in confusion as they continued to fall. He pulled Kurt into a close embrace, kissing the top of his head. Kurt continued to cling to him in fear of falling faster. He was horrified out of his wits, yet he was somehow calmed by this boy’s advances. It felt… familiar, somehow. But just as he was starting to lean into the grip, they hurdled to the ground, hitting the hard dirt with a loud smack. Kurt sat up suddenly, rubbing the shoulder that he landed on. He saw a hand being held out to him, which he gladly took and stood up.

“Are you alright?” The boy asked. Kurt looked a bit surprised. He didn’t notice it before, but the young man had a very sweet voice. Kurt nodded, receiving another smile in response.

“Wonderful,” he said, clapping his hands together, “Because we are running terribly late and if you were hurt, goodness knows what we’d do.” Kurt wasn’t quite sure if the boy was genuinely worried about him or if he just wanted to hurry up. However, he didn’t have time to think about it, due to the boy yanking him down a long corridor at top speed.

“Who the hell are you!?” Kurt cried, trying to keep from tripping as he attempted to catch up with the mystery boy’s pace. He turned back as he continued to run and smiled at Kurt.

“I’m the White Rabbit, but everyone calls me _______ ‘Warbler’ ___________.” he declared, before turning back around and leaving Kurt very confused. He saw his mouth moving, but no words came out before and after ‘Warbler’.

‘Warbler…’ Kurt thought, ‘Why does that sound so familiar?’

Abruptly, Warbler (As Kurt decided to just go with that) screeched to a halt and Kurt crashed in to his back. After rubbing his forehead, Kurt glanced around their destination. They were in a large, white room, connected to several different doors. Sitting in the center of the room was a table. On the top of it, was nothing except a small bottle and a tiny key. Warbler turned back to Kurt with a slightly sad expression.

“I’m afraid that I must go,” he murmured, “but don’t worry, you shall see me again soon.” Before he could even react, the White Rabbit disappeared in a puff of blue smoke. Kurt coughed and fanned his hand, hoping get the smolder away from his eyes. When it cleared, he raced over to the doors, aiming to open them, only to find that they were all locked. He groaned, but remembered the key on the table. He grabbed it quickly and tried it in each of the doors. Nothing.

He let out another moan in exasperation and slid down to the floor. He pulled his knees to his chest and stared across the space, only to see a tiny door on the other side. He looked at the key in his palm and realized that it was the exact size to fit in the door.

That’s my only way out!?” he muttered, standing up again. He started to stride over to the door, only to have the bottle catch his eye on the way. He picked it up and examined it. It was a light pink color and shaped like an hourglass. The contents inside seemed to swirl around on its own and a label was tied to it. In thick, fancy scrawl were the words ‘Drink Me’. Kurt stared at the contents. He wasn’t one for eating or drinking things when he had no idea what they were, but there was a tiny voice in the back of his head saying ‘Drink it. You’ve got nothing to lose.’

He shook his head and closed his eyes. “Might as well,” he muttered “Although I get the feeling that I’m going to regret this.” He uncorked the bottle and took a quick gulp. He stood there for a moment, not feeling any different. Until he noticed the table getting taller and the bottle growing in this hand. He dropped it quickly and saw his horror what was happening.

“I’m getting smaller!” he cried to himself. He shrank and shrank until realized he was about the size of the tiny door. He raced over to it and turned the key in the lock. He heard a click and pried it open. He was met with salty water hastily splashing out of the door and filling the room around him. He desperately tried to stay afloat, until his strength left him and he began to sink below the surface.
