I walked into math class the next day feeling very confident. I was going to put my plan into action.
The plan was simple: all I had to do was ask to borrow something from Blaine, just as Blaine had done to me before. Alright, so it wasn’t the greatest plan, but it would work. I would be the one approaching Blaine this time, and it wouldn’t be an uncommon conversation to have in the middle of class. It was foolproof.
When Blaine sat next to me however, I began to get very nervous. What if Blaine said no, or replied with some sarcastic comment? What if I stuttered again? I took a deep breath to calm my nerves. I could do this.
Forty minutes into class, I turned to Blaine and tapped him on the shoulder. Blaine turned, a questioning look on his face.
“Hey, do you mind if I borrow that eraser?” I asked, nodding my head at the eraser that sat on Blaine’s desk.
“Sure,” he responded, and picked up the eraser to give to me. I reached out with slightly shaking fingers to take it from him.
When our fingers brushed, I died a little on the inside.
I brought the eraser to my paper, erasing idly while celebrating my triumph internally. I had done it! I had asked Blaine for his eraser! I didn’t know why this made me so happy, but it did. I mean, Blaine is just a regular guy, right? I thought to myself. I lightly tossed the eraser back onto Blaine’s desk, thanking whatever greater being that was out there when it landed in the exact same spot it had been lying on before.
“Thank you,” I said when Blaine looked my way. Blaine smiled a crooked smile that made me go weak at the knees.
“It’s no problem,” he returned and went back to his work.
I looked over to where Mercedes sat, and found that she was already looking at me, a knowing smile on her lips. I winked at her, and her smile grew larger. Today was looking to be a good day.
And at that exact moment, the phone rang. Mr. Walker announced it was Mr. Schuester, requesting to speak with Blaine. He got up, and left the classroom.
He didn’t come back for the rest of the period.
When the bell rang, Mercedes and I discussed theories as to why Mr. Schue needed to speak with Blaine. We both came up with nothing.
Neither of us knew, but we would find out soon enough.
Walking into Glee Club the next afternoon, all of us were in for a real surprise. What we saw stopped us in our tracks.
Was that really Blaine Anderson sitting right in front of us? In the choir room? I traded puzzled looks with those around me, and went to take my seat. I knew that Blaine couldn’t be doing this voluntarily, he would never be caught dead in the choir room and being in Glee Club would tarnish his “bad boy” reputation. What was going on here?
At that precise moment, Mr. Schuester walked in from his office, and addressed the members of the club.
“I’m sure you all saw walking in that we have a new member joining us this week. His name is Blaine Anderson.”
Silence reigned throughout the room. No one quite understood why Blaine was here. Mercedes nudged my arm with her own and leaned over to whisper to me.
“Can he even sing?” she asked, to which I just shrugged my shoulders. This was certainly going to be interesting.
“Well Blaine,” Mr. Schue said into the awkward silence. “Show us what you got.”
Blaine got up and walked over to the band, and whispered something or another to each member. When they nodded, he picked up the spare electric guitar and hooked it up to one of the amps. He moved to stand in the middle of the room, and with a nod from the band, they began. I frowned at the opening bars of the song, not recognizing it one bit. But hell, if that mattered because Blaine opened his mouth to sing, and from that moment on my life would never be the same.
She paints her fingers with a close precision
He starts to notice empty bottles of gin
And takes a moment to assess the sin she’s paid for
My jaw hit the floor. Blaine’s voice was pure sex, there was no other way to describe it. Looking around at my fellow Glee Clubbers, I knew they were thinking the same. Even Rachel Berry looked impressed.
A lonely speaker in a conversation
Her words are spinning through his ears again
There’s nothing wrong with just a taste of what you paid for
Blaine was bobbing his head to the beat, his fingers plucking at the strings and moving along the neck of the guitar expertly. I was sure I had never seen something so incredibly sexy in my entire life.
Say what you mean, tell me I’m right
And let the sun rain down on me
Give me a sign, I wanna believe
Woah! Mona Lisa, you’re guaranteed to run this town
Woah! Mona Lisa, I’d pay to see you frown!
Blaine was singing with no inhibitions now, probably figuring he had nothing to lose. His voice rose and grew with the music, growing more powerful and sure of himself with every word. I just couldn’t help but openly stare at the incredible boy singing right before my eyes as he sang the next verse of the song, reaching the bridge and the chorus once more. It was at this point that the music slowed right down, and Blaine began to growl the next few lines, drawing them out.
Mona Lisa, wear me out
Pleased to please
Mona Lisa, wear me out
Now for the most part during the song, Blaine hadn’t met the eyes of anyone, and had been intent on staring at the ground. But now Blaine had raised his head, and was staring straight at me. I had to have been dreaming. There was now no music, it was dead silent. Blaine’s heavenly voice filled the room, wrapping itself around me, mesmerising me.
Say what you mean, tell me I’m right
And let the sun rain down on me
Give me a sign, I wanna believe
With a wink that had myself and every female member of the New Directions swooning, Blaine’s fingers went back to the guitar, and with a sudden burst of sound, the music started up again.
Woah! Mona Lisa, you’re guaranteed to run this town
Woah! Mona Lisa, I’d pay to see you froooown!
Oh! Say what you mean, tell me I’m right
And let the sun rain down on me!
Give me a sign, I wanna believe!
With a few final strums to the guitar, the sound lingered, and the same few notes from the opening bars were the only sound that remained. Blaine’s eyes met mine once more. I was sure I had stopped breathing. With that beautiful crooked smile of his, Blaine sang the last line of the song.
There’s nothing wrong with just a taste of what you paid for…
There was a moment of silence, and then suddenly everyone was on their feet, clapping frantically. I couldn’t help but join them, that was by far one of the most amazing performances I had ever experienced. That was the amazing thing about Blaine: he didn’t need extravagant costumes or flashy dance moves to capture an audience. All he needed was his voice and a guitar, and he could captivate hundreds, I was sure of it. Blaine observed his audience, smiling a little at his first standing ovation on his first performance before composing himself. The impassive look he had before the performance was back into place, and I was sad to see the smiling Blaine go. Mr. Schuester got up and walked over to Blaine, looking as impressed as Kurt felt.
“Wow, that was…wow,” Mr. Schue laughed a little. “Blaine, welcome to the New Directions!”
The group cheered, then got up from their seats and ran down the risers to congratulate Blaine on his performance. I hung back a little bit, not sure of what to say or do until Mercedes pushed me forwards.
“Go get him, white boy,” she whispered in my ear and pushed me forward once more. I took a deep breath, and walked towards Blaine. Blaine made eye contact with me, and I smiled nervously. I took a few more steps forward.
“You were really great, I – I never knew you could sing like that,” I forced out, wishing I could have said something better than what I just did. “Never knew you could play the – the guitar either.” I cursed the stutter.
“Thanks,” Blaine said, than added as an afterthought, “I never knew you were in Glee Club either.”
I smiled at him again. “I guess people can surprise you sometimes, huh?” Suddenly, Puck appeared behind Blaine and clapped a hand onto his shoulder.
“That’s my boy! You killed that song!” Puck crowed happily, and led Blaine back to seat, talking to him about what an amazing job he did and how they should play guitar together sometime. At this point, everyone had returned to their seat and I rushed back to mine next to Mercedes, ready to absolutely fanboy over Blaine until Mr. Schue quieted everybody down and began his lesson. As he spoke about their assignment for the week, I daydreamed about Blaine and his incredibly sexy performance, and the fact that speaking to him wasn’t quite so hard anymore. I thanked whatever greater being was out there that Blaine had joined Glee, for whatever reason.
Now, I couldn’t wait for math class tomorrow morning.
