It was a Sunday.
Kurt never particularly liked Sundays. Sure, they were part of the weekend, but they were the inevitable end of the weekend. Even if you were relaxing, you always had that lingering thought of, "Tomorrow is Monday." And everyone knows that that is a depressing thought.
Today, however, Kurt was very anxious about Monday.
Monday would be his first check- up at the hospital.
With Blaine.
So yes. He was very anxious.
Every negative thought that could have possibly gone through his mind was festering and driving him crazy. Blaine would probably be really uncomfortable. He would probably try to get out of there as soon as he could. He would probably act really stiff and awkward. He would probably avoid eye contact.
Or worse.
Maybe he would sit Kurt down, look him in the eye and say something like, "I never meant to lead you on. I'm just not looking for a relationship right now. We can still be friends." Or something equally as awful.
Kurt got up from the couch and looked for something to do. Yesterday Rachel had told him to have a gross day, and that's exactly what he did. But she was right. Two days in a row of that is toxic behavior, and he would not lessen himself to the status of couch potato.
He thought about calling Rachel only to realize she was probably getting ready for her matinee performance.
He groaned. Despite what she had told him yesterday, Kurt still wasn't allowed to exercise, so that was out of the question. He walked around the apartment to look for something to do. He had already finished packing away all of Aidan's things and placed them in the hall the previous afternoon. He had also sent a text to Aidan saying, "Pick up your stuff by tonight or I'm donating it all to charity." The next time he walked out of the apartment it was gone.
Kurt's eyes landed on his iPad. He decided to do something useful with his time and work on some sketches. He sat on the couch, opened it up, and tapped his favorite design app. He scrolled through his different pieces and decided to work on a jacket he had almost finished.
A few minutes into it, Kurt realized that this was the jacket Blaine had wanted to make polka-dotted. He rolled his eyes, but couldn't help the smile that stretched across his face.
Half an hour later, he had just about finished the jacket. Something was still not quite right, but he was certain he could send it off to Isabelle and it would be approved in an instant. With a resigned sigh, he opened up a sketch for some women's jeans he was working on.
When his eyes started hurting from looking at the screen too long, Kurt picked up his phone.
2:51p Kurt: Please go get frozen yogurt with me between shows. ):
He got a reply a few minutes later.
2:58p Rachel: Sorry, Kurt. You know how it works. No dairy products before shows. I'm sure you could find someone else to go with you though....;)
Kurt rolled his eyes when he read the message and set the phone down. Rachel was nothing if not optimistic. He looked for a book or anything to occupy his time. Today really sucked.
...
When Rachel took her final bow and walked backstage, she checked her phone, fully expecting a reply from Kurt.
No new messages.
Oh, God. He was wallowing.
Rachel let out a sigh and went to call his number. Right before she hit the number, though, an idea struck her. She navigated through her contacts and found a number she had never used before and hit call.
Several rings later, the other line picked up. "Um, hello?"
"Blaine, hi!"
"Oh, um hi. Is this... Rachel?"
"Yes."
"Oh. Hey. It's nice to hear from you." He paused. "How did you get my number?"
"Wes gave it to me."
This took Blaine by surprise. "Why are you talking to Wes?"
"Irrelevant. Listen, we have a problem. It's Kurt."
She had Blaine's full attention now. "Kurt? What happened? Is he okay?"
"Oh yes, he's fine," she said. "Well, actually, I don't know about fine. But he's not hurt or anything, if that's what you're asking. Well. Not physically anyway."
Blaine was having a hard time keeping up. "Rachel, I'm not so sure I—"
"He kicked Aidan out."
Blaine's eyes went wide. "He... He what?"
Rachel sighed, wanting to get to the part that mattered already. "Aidan showed up, asked for Kurt back, Kurt bitched him out, and they're done now. Like, for good. But that's not what the big deal is. The big deal is that Kurt is really upset right now."
Blaine was still trying to get over the part where Kurt kicked Aidan out. "I—Well... I mean, yeah, that makes sense, right? He and his fiance are done, so that's..." He trailed off. He was honestly falling into a depression so quickly he didn't even know what to do.
Of course Kurt was upset about losing his fiance. They had been together for... Blaine thought about it. He had never asked Kurt how long they were together. Thinking back, though, he never really wanted to. He just wanted Kurt to forget that douchebag.
But no, Kurt deserved to be alone right now, if that's what he needed. Blaine had always known that he was not the one Kurt was in love with. He would have to let Kurt get over Aidan at his own pace.
"Are you stupid?" Rachel asked, pulling him from his thoughts.
"I—What?"
"He's not upset about Aidan," she informed him, rolling her eyes. "He's upset about you."
Blaine's jaw dropped. "Me? But that's—But why—I..."
Rachel glared at the phone. "Do you seriously not know what he could be upset about?"
Blaine thought it over. Well it could be... But no, it couldn't be. Could it? "He's not upset about the... kiss, is he?"
"Yeah, actually. Pretty much."
Blaine couldn't believe it. "So... he actually, y'know... wanted to kiss me?"
Rachel's expression went completely stony. "Blaine Anderson. I'm about to walk over there and punch you in the face."
Blaine didn't have a response to this.
"Of course he wanted to kiss you! You're basically everyone's dream man, in case you haven't noticed. Oh my God. Did you seriously not know? Or are you just being humble? Because if you're that oblivious you're going to need to see a doctor about that. Wait!" She realized something. "You are a doctor! Oh my GOD. How did you ever become a doctor if you're this oblivious?"
"I.... I don't...."
"Listen," she began, tone softer. "All I'm saying is, hope isn't lost. You've still got a shot. A good one. You just need to make it right. Okay?"
Blaine let out a shaky breath. "But... What if I missed my chance?"
Rachel chuckled on the other line. "Don't be stupid. Just do whatever feels right."
Blaine smiled. "Thank you, Rachel."
"Any time."
They both hung up. Blaine let out a huge breath he felt like he had been holding for weeks. He needed a plan.
...
Blaine still didn't have a plan.
He had sat up thinking all night and couldn't figure anything out. Every idea he had was either too cheesy or too just stupid.
All he wanted to do was ask Kurt out. Not even on a date or anything. Maybe just for coffee? That wouldn't be so hard, would it? He had asked guys out before. Surely just having some coffee wouldn't be so bad.
So then why was he having trouble breathing? As he walked out of the hospital locker room, he realized his hands were sweating, too. Great.
At some point today, Kurt had an appointment. He wasn't exactly sure when, because it was typical for appointments to be early or get held up for as much as two hours. But sometime today he would see Kurt.
Oh God.
Blaine was freaking out.
He did his best to go through his day as he normally would, but he found himself glad that he didn't have any surgeries, because there was no way he was focusing on anything right now. He was currently listening to an elderly woman describe pain which he had not only informed her was heartburn but had also prescribed medicine. She was refusing to take it however, and was annoyed and confused that she wasn't getting better.
It was days like this that made Blaine want to bang his head against a wall.
By lunch Blaine was a jittery mess. A few doctors commented on it, but he brushed it off well enough. The only people who really seemed to know what was going on were the nurses. But then again, the nurses knew everything.
Blaine checked his watch for the billionth time that day. At some point in the next two hours or so, he would be face to face with Kurt. And he still had no idea what to say.
Maybe it would be best to not even ask him out at all. Kurt was probably not too happy with him at the moment, as Rachel had said. The best course of action would probably be to ease them back into their friendship status they had been at. Maybe a lighthearted conversation? That would probably be best. It was the easiest route, Blaine knew, and definitely the most secure. Yeah, he would need to talk to Kurt before going any further.
He checked his watch again.
The minute hand hadn't moved.
Blaine was going to be dead by the end of the day, he swore.
...
Kurt swore that he was going to be dead by the end of the day.
All this waiting was driving him crazy. His anxiety was picking up again as he neared the entrance to the hospital. As much as he wanted to see Blaine's face again, he really didn't know if he could handle the rejection that was surely coming.
He took one last huge breath as he walked through the front doors. As soon as he was inside it took all of his willpower to not turn around and go back the way he came. He still hated hospitals. They were stark and stiff and uncomfortable. Being inside one just made him feel sick.
Kurt was told to go sit in a room to wait for a nurse. He did as he was told and let out a shaky breath as he went to sit on the crinkly paper on the bench in the middle of the room.
The worst part about going to the doctor, Kurt thought, was waiting for the nurses and doctors to actually get in the room. Honestly, he could probably design a solid wardrobe in the time it took them to arrive.
He sat with his hands folded neatly on his lap, trying desperately to keep his breathing even. The last thing he needed was for his heart rate to go up right before a check-up.
He closed his eyes and focused on taking deep breaths for several minutes. He tried to pretend it was yoga. Inhale...exhale. Inhale...exhale.
After several minutes of deep breathing, Kurt heard the door shut almost silently. He opened his eyes expecting to see a nurse.
It wasn't a nurse.
Before he knew what was happening, Blaine was making his way over to Kurt, and then their lips were crashing together. Kurt let himself melt into the kiss completely, cupping Blaine's jaw and the back of his neck. Their lips moved together like they had been doing it for years. When Blaine licked at Kurt's lower lip, he gasped, parting his lips just enough.
The kiss got deeper and more heated. Blaine let out a groan and Kurt swore he had never heard a sexier sound.
Blaine moved to Kurt's jawline, kissing a trail there. Kurt gasped when Blaine sucked at his pulse point and his eyes fluttered shut.
"God," Blaine whispered against Kurt's skin, "we should have been doing this ages ago."
Kurt only moaned in response.
Eventually, Blaine's lips moved their way back to Kurt's, and the kisses became softer. There was a moment when the two simply sat, foreheads together, lips not touching but breath ghosting together. Kurt voice was breathy. "If more doctors' appointments were like this I'd be here every day."
Blaine chuckled and leaned in for another soft kiss. "I think that can be arranged."
Kurt had never heard Blaine's voice so gravelly. Without thinking, he crashed his lips back into Blaine's. He let his teeth graze over Blaine's bottom lip before sucking gently, eliciting a soft moan. "Kurt—"
"Well, Kurt, I haven't seen you in— oh!" Nurse Courtney was standing in the doorway with Kurt's chart, eyes wide. "Oh, um. I'll um, I'll... give you two a moment." She shut the door quickly, leaving the two alone.
Kurt and Blaine had broken apart, taken completely off guard by the intrusion. They looked back at each other now, both men blushing and smiling bashfully.
It was Blaine who broke the ice. "That was... Wow." He rubbed at the back of his neck and tried to suppress his grin.
"Yeah, that pretty much sums it up." Kurt let out a laugh. "That... Yeah."
They looked at each other again for just a moment before their mouths crashed together once more. This time it was more heated, filled with more bites and pants and moans than before. The next thing Kurt knew, he was being pushed back onto the bench and Blaine was on his knees, hovering above him. He gasped as Blaine's mouth found his neck.
"Blaine—"
Blaine broke away, looking down at Kurt. "I—Shit. Was that okay? That was too fast, wasn't it? Shit, I didn't mean to—"
"Blaine calm down," Kurt chuckled. "That was... more than okay." He took a moment to let the smile take over his face before a timid knock sounded at the door.
Blaine seemed to have totally forgotten that the nurse was even there. He reluctantly climbed off the bench and Kurt sat up. Blaine raised his eyebrows at Kurt, who gestured for him to go ahead. Blaine opened the door to find Nurse Courtney standing there. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt. I can come back later, if you need, I was just—"
"Courtney, it's fine," Kurt assured her, smiling fondly.
"Still," she said, smirking now, "I think I'll drop this chart off and come back in a few minutes. I'll let you two... get better acquainted." She winked before handing the chart to Blaine and walking off.
Blaine rubbed his neck again as he set the chart on a counter, involuntarily taking a step in closer to Kurt. "So that was... okay?"
Kurt shook his head and laughed. "I'm serious. 'Okay' does not begin to cover it."
Blaine bit his lip in an attempt to hold off his smile. "We'll have to do this more often."
"Oh," Kurt said, grinning openly, "I don't think that will be a problem."
