Author's Notes: Another short one, I'm sorry.Reviews make me write faster and longer and better. (hint hint)Thanks again for reading, guys.Hope you like it! :)

Upon seeing Santana in the hospital, Kurt had very promptly turned on his heel and run away like a small child who had just imagined a monster emerging from their closet. Santana had chuckled to herself, obviously quite impressed with the reaction that she had caused.

Today was meant to be a fantastic day for Kurt. He was going to see Blaine in the morning (and hopefully charm the crap out of him until the object of Kurt’s affection was practically melting in his arms), go to an audition for a new off-Broadway musical that had high hopes to get to Broadway in the near future, attend his afternoon class at NYADA and then have a Barbra Streisand marathon with Rachel on his sofa. All-in-all it was one of the best days Kurt was going to have. And then Blaine’s stupid boyfriend had to walk in with his perfectly coiffed hair and stomp on it. Seriously, what kind of name was Sebastian anyway?

‘He probably has crabs’ Kurt thought to himself, smirking a little at his Little Mermaid reference before realizing how sad he had become. However, the Hummels were not a family that allowed a little bump in the road to dampen their spirits, and so Kurt firmly planted a smile on his face and marched off to his next destination.

The audition was for a new musical written by no-one important that was a take on the traditional tale of “The Elves and the Shoemaker” with a little intricacies added in.  Kurt was auditioning for one of the lead elf roles, and had been practicing his elf impressions for weeks now (not that he really needed to, his voice was high pitched enough).

The waiting room was full of more pale, skinny boys than Kurt had envisioned. Suddenly this seemed like a much more challenging audition that he had originally thought, the sheer mass of hopefuls before him humming to themselves caused his nerves to kick in full-blast. He found a small space in the room where he could warm up before his name was called.

“Next; Christian Hotham, then Kurt Hummel, and then Michael Hurton” A chubby lady called, her head peeking out of the audition room. ‘Breathe, Hummel’ he thought to himself.

The door slammed and a young boy walked out, the look on his face that of disappointment and frustration. “Hummel? Wherever you are, they’re ready for you.” He called before moving off.

Kurt walked through the doors slowly. Before him was a stage set up with a single microphone, a piano and a pianist and a stereo. Sitting behind a long table stacked with piles and piles of papers were 3 men and 2 women, each with a stern and unimpressed look on their face.

“Hi” Kurt said breathily. “Kurt Hummel.” The man in the center nodded at him, and then again at the stage. Kurt positioned himself in front of the microphone, the lights blaring down on him, blinding his vision.

“What will you be singing today, Mr Hummel?” one of the voices asked.

“I will be singing As If We Never Said Goodbye from the musical Sunset Boulevard.”

Shuffling papers.

He heard the music swell behind him, the eyes of the judges fixed on him. He launched into the song seamlessly.

… I don’t know why I’m frightened, I know my way around here…

The suited people in front of him took notes in between glancing up at him as he began to give into the music more and more. He incorporated some simple choreography (that he had organized the night prior) and let his smile spread over his face. Before long the judges had stopped taking notes, one had even put down his pen, and watched as Kurt performed.

The song ended and Kurt was met with warm smiles and one sneaky thumbs-up from the woman on the far left.

“Thank you,” the man in the middle said, “we’ll be in touch.”

Kurt had heard that phrase one too many times to allow his hopes to rise at all.

The man smiled brightly. “Don’t worry, we will definitely be in touch.”

Ok, that was reason enough to assume he’d got the part, right?

It took all of Kurt’s strength to refrain from skipping out of the room and jumping around in his delight. Immediately, once on the pavement outside, he called Rachel to let her know about the audition. He was met with “oh, Kurt, I knew it!” and “I’m so proud of you” and “we’ll have to celebrate”.

“Yeah, absolutely! Post-pone Barbra, I am taking you out! I’ll be home soon, Rach.”

“Well done, Kurt, you so deserve it” Rachel smiled.

Kurt’s next instinct was to tell Blaine, considering he’d spent much of their time together that morning gushing about it. ‘Not your boyfriend, Kurt’, he reminded himself, ‘not really even your friend.’ Instead, he put his phone back in his pocket.

Kurt’s phone buzzed just as he was walking into NYADA

From: Blaine

To: Kurt

How did it go? :) – B

Kurt smiled to himself, but decided not to answer it just yet.
