"Thank you for helping me. I honestly don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t come along." The guy who had just scared the living daylights out of me said, looking grateful.
I studied him for a few moments. I know it sounds horribly cliché, but there was just something about him that I couldn't quite put my finger on. He nodded awkwardly, and I realised I was staring. Oops.
“No problem!" I replied hastily. "And, um, I'm happy to have helped, but I really must go!”
He gave me a small nod, and I took the opportunity to flee. Damn, way to let your guard down, Blaine. Where the hell has Jeff got to while you're messing around gazing at strangers?
"Tina? Nick?" I asked, needing a distraction. "Tell me everything."
"Jeff's managed to get on a train, and Santana's off to get him now. No one followed him as far as we can tell, and Tina's already swept the area around the train for bugs. He's clean, but that brings us to you."
I was utterly confused. "What?"
"That guy who accosted you a minute ago bugged you. No other way to put it."
I swore. I took a couple of deep breaths to try to get the annoyance out of my voice; Nick got upset if you sounded pissed and that was the last thing I needed. I failed miserably.
"Can't you just disable it?" I hissed through gritted teeth.
"Tina says it's best if we don't, not until she can have a look at it. It might be one that can be reenabled. Besides, we don't know exactly the bug is on you. You won't want her searching you in the middle of the street if it turns out that it's down your p---"
"OKAY, THANKYOU NICK." I said loudly, cutting him off. As well as being Tina's second in command, Nick had an uncanny ability to make things awkward. He certainly gave Santana a run for her money, and that's saying something!
"And to think that only this morning I had no intention of doing anything but sitting on one of those totally awesome spinny chairs in Tina's computer room, eating shit and watching the cops run around trying to cope with the Times Square hack." I groaned. "I guess this means I can't come back to you guys then?"
"Sorry Blaine, but no." Tina said, joining the conversation. "Much as I would like to, I can't let you lead the cops right to us. You may as well head out of the city, into that small chalet-like house with the blue door. You remember it?"
Oh yes, I remembered it. When an relative you can't work out how you're related to leaves you a house with the reasoning that 'his hair reminds me of my favourite poodle, Percy' it tends to stick in your mind. Then again, I hadn't spoken about it, let alone been there in years. I guess it was understandable that Tina thought I might've forgotten about it.
"Yeah." I mumbled, quickly working out the best way to get there. The street I was in was still empty, but someone was bound to come along at some point and wonder why the hell there was a random guy standing in the road apparently talking to himself. "Could someone make sure there's a toothbrush and a change of clothes there?"
"I'll out Satan onto it the moment she gets back." Tina promised. "Actually, I may need to send someone else; she won't be back for a while. Hey, Wes! Come here for a sec?"
I listened as Wes stomped into the computer room.
"What? Please tell me neither of those two have ended up in a cop---"
"Shush Wes. Blaine just needs spare clothes dropped off because he got bugged and we're gonna draw them away before I sort the silly thing out tomorrow." she said soothingly, but it did nothing to cheer Sir Grumpsalot up.
"And you want me to drive them? Fine. Where am I going?"
"Blue door."
"That's ages away!"
"Tough cookies. Go on, the bag's in my car outside."
Wes stomped off again, louder this time, and Tina turned her attention back to me.
"Do you know how to get there? Or is that a silly question?"
"I'll find my way." I replied dryly. In reality, I could have found my way there in my sleep, but I was too tired to come up with an appropriate retort. I was going to be spending the next few hours on various different types of crowded public transport, with a bunch of strangers, when the last stranger I'd talked to had turned out to be a cop. Great.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Four hours later, the front door slammed behind me as I trudged into the living room of my late great uncle once removed or whoever he was's house. The interior was just as I remembered it: almost blindingly white walls, chocolate curtains and sofas to match, and the ridiculously out-of-place yellow carpet. Yep, my relative had style.
I'd taken out my earpiece long ago, because the high-pitched crackling that all underground train caused was giving me a headache. I really hated the subway. Delving into the void that I call my pocket, I picked it up and placed it on the cabinet to deal with later. It turned out to be the worst idea I'd had that day, as I promptly whacked my hip against the wooden door and the earpiece fell with a rattle right down the back of it.
"Damnit!"
Very faint laughter broke out from the floor, and I knew that the others had heard what I'd done. Problem was, it wasn't even the first time it had happened. Oh well, I could sort it out later. Food and entertainment first.
"Life's too short to even care at all, I'm losing my mind, losing my mind..." I sang absentmindedly to myself, searching for the CD player I'd dumped in the cupboard last time I'd been here. I found it under a stack of old newspapers, (God knows what they were doing there...) and plugged it in. The only CD in it was an old school one that we'd recorded in my old Glee Club. I didn't mind too much about the lack of choice. They had, apart from when I was with the others in our little spy-group, been the best times of my life. No one had judged me there, or belittled me over things I couldn't control, unlike at home. My father had always favoured Cooper over me...
But enough about that. I was going to have a nice evening doing whatever the hell I wanted, and starting off with karaoke whilst I made dinner. My head turned instinctively towards the source of the sound as a new song came on. I grinned. Hey Soul Sister had always been one of my ultimate favourites!
I danced my way into the tiny kitchen, already in my usual 'overly-cheerful' mood as Santana called it, and began searching the cupboards for a suitable pot or pan. I couldn't cook to save my life, so I was keeping it relatively simple. Pancakes were quite appealing, and I slid on my socks over to the fridge to see if Tina had made Wes bring food too. She usually did, and---
*CRASH*
The sound of something smashing in the other room made my feet leave the floor. What the hell had broken now? Nick often stayed here, and he would kill me if I'd broken some of his stuff..
I scuttled back into the room, and saw the cat ornament that had been sitting on the fireplace on the floor.
"Damn you, kitty." I said, sighing. "You gave me a heart attack!"
I bent down to pick the pieces up, but movement behind me stopped me in my tracks. I turned around just in time to see a familiar mop of chestnut hair before the world went black. I didn't even remember hitting the floor.
