Kurt looked around the Lima Bean. Something was different. He has been there a million times before and he could just sense something was off. People weren't looking at him like they usually were. Kurt couldn't understand that because he was looking amazing. He was wearing a black fedora with a bright red feather on the left side and a marvelous suit that Lagerfeld himself would kill to own. No one ever ignored his presence, how dare they? Kurt looked around some more. He couldn't actually remember why he was there. He turned back towards the table and took a sip of his coffee. Funny, he didn't remember buying that. Things were getting freaky. Why couldn't he remember a thing? He reached in his pocket for his phone. Maybe he could find a text from the person he was supposed to be meeting here, because he sure as hell didn't know.
"It's not there" said a voice from across the table.
Kurt looked up to see a boy about his age. He was wearing a white V-neck tee, white jeans and white chucks. He had curly brown hair with chestnut brown eyes to match. He smiled widely at Kurt.
"I said it's not there. Your phone" said the boy
"Who are you?" asked Kurt quickly. The boy took a sip of his coffee and shrank back into his chair.
"I can tell you where it is if you want" he said.
"Where did you come from? Who are you?" asked Kurt, more aggressive this time. The boy across from him wasn't there only a minute earlier, which he knew for a fact. The boy across from him laughed.
"Take a sip of your coffee Kurt, this is going to take a bit of explaining" said the boy as he was grasping his hands together.
"I have time, or at least I think I do. Tell me who you are" demanded a now frustrated Kurt.
"I'm Blaine" said the mysterious boy across from him, "I'm your guardian angel"
Kurt scoffed at that. "If that's a pick up line, you could have used something better you know" said Kurt as he picked up his coffee, "Now, if you'll excuse me I'm going to go hang out with some people that aren't assholes" He stood up and turned to walk away.
"You died Kurt" replied Blaine.
Kurt turned his head and stared at Blaine, "What?"
"You died" said Blaine very nonchalantly "Sit down, and I'll explain everything"
Kurt turned around to face Blaine. "What kind of sick person are you, and how do you know my name?" Kurt whispered.
"Kurt, there is no need to be quiet," Blaine said, "No one can hear you"
Kurt looked around at all the people in the coffee shop. No one was looking at him or even acknowledged that he was there. "I ... What?" Kurt asked. He was more confused and annoyed right now than he had ever been in his entire life.
"Just sit" said Blaine, nodding his head toward the empty seat across from him.
Kurt did what he was told and sat in his chair. He looked around the shop again. He didn't know what to say, or even what to do. He didn't want to look at Blaine or whatever his name was. He just wanted to know what was going on. Why couldn't he remember anything, and more importantly, why wasn't anyone looking at his flawless outfit?
"Now," said Blaine, "What's the last thing you remember?"
Kurt turned to look at Blaine who was leaned over the table taking the top off of his coffee. He gave Blaine a confused look.
"They never put enough sugar in here, well for my liking anyway. I like my coffee sweet as can be, but maybe that's an angel thing, I don't know" said Blaine.
Angel thing? What did Blaine mean by that? "I'm confused" admitted Kurt to Blaine.
"That's okay, I expected that" smiled Blaine as he snapped his fingers. The coffee in his cup instantly got lighter. "It takes some getting used too"
Kurt's eyes widened. What just happened? " I .. Um...I," he stammered.
"I know you don't believe me right now Kurt, so try" Blaine said.
Kurt snapped his fingers and looked into his coffee cup. Nothing changed.
Blaine laughed, "Not that you fool, you aren't an angel , you're just dead"
Kurt fell back in his seat when he said that word, Dead. What did that even mean? "What do you mean dead?" asked Kurt.
Blaine smiled , "It means that you aren't living, I thought that was kind of obvious?"
Kurt narrowed his eyes, " I can't be dead, I don't remember dying, it doesn't make sense"
"Try yelling" said Blaine, taking a sip from his coffee.
"I am not going to yell" said Kurt, annoyed.
"Come on Kurt, I know you want to. And that way you will know I am not lying. Because, let's face it, who could ignore such a cute boy like yourself?" Blaine said.
Kurt blushed at that little bit, but tried to hide it. He looked around the Lima Bean and let out a loud "Hello". No one even flinched. He looked at Blaine and then back towards the crowd of people, "Can anyone hear me!" he yelled.
"Nope, they can't" said Blaine as Kurt turned back towards him, "Now let's try this again. What is the last thing you remember?"
Kurt took a deep breath. This was crazy, he wasn't dead, right? But then why was everyone ignoring him? He gave in to Blaine's question, " Um, I don't really know. Um, probably driving home from Mercedes' house last night."
"Ah, not to bad Hummel" said Blaine impressed, "Not too many people remember even a week to before they died, but you remember the night it happened.
"The night what happened?" asked Kurt
"The night you died" said Blaine, grasping his coffee cup.
Kurt choked on the words, "Died? No, I would have remembered dying. I mean, that's a pretty big deal"
Blaine made his voice more stern, " Kurt we can do this little back and forth all day, but I will always be the one that is right. Last night you died in a car accident. Drunk driver. You almost made it home; you were by Rachel's house when he slammed into you. You died at impact."
Kurt's eyes swelled up with tears. He was really dead. He couldn't believe it, though he thought he might have too. All he could think of was his dad. God, what was happening? He has so much more to do and see.
"Don't cry" said Blaine, "It's not that bad"
"Not that bad? Not that bad! I just found out I'm dead, I think this is where I'm allowed to cry" sniffled Kurt as he wiped his tears into his sleeve.
"No no, I haven't even got to the best part yet" said Blaine, handing Kurt a tissue that Kurt only assumed must have came out of thin air.
"Oh really, it gets better than me dying?" asked Kurt sarcastically.
"Um, yeah!" said Blaine a little too excitedly.
Kurt dabbed at his tears with the tissue, which was so unusually soft.
"See Kurt, I'm your guardian angel" explained Blaine, "that means that if you want it, you get a second chance"
Kurt looked at Blaine coldly, "What do you mean?"
"It means that if you accept me to be your guardian angel, when you walk out that door, you are alive again," explained Blaine, "It will be as if you didn't die at all"
"I accept, I accept!" said Kurt, relieved.
"Wait wait, you don't even know what the conditions are" said Blaine.
"Okay, what are they" asked Kurt.
"There are three real conditions Kurt, " said Blaine, " first, you must agree that you will live your life to the fullest. That means at no point are you to ever settle for less than what you really wanted"
"Easy" said Kurt
Blaine smiled, " Second, you have to let me pop into your life whenever I feel you need me. You can't call me to grant you wishes or anything though, I'm not some Genie"
Kurt laughed and agreed.
"Third, " Blaine said, " you have to never mention me or the fact that you died. No one knows it, and you have to act like you don't know it either.
Kurt nodded his head in agreement.
"If you fail to do any of these, your contract will be terminated, and your death will become final" said Blaine.
"Contract?" asked Kurt.
Blaine pulled a contract out of the air, along with a feather pen, "We angels are very classy" he joked.
Kurt, still in disbelief, took the pen and signed the contract.
"Now," said Blaine, "when you walk out that door the contract will be active, do you understand?"
Kurt licked his lips and looked around the coffee shop, " Yes" he said.
"Alright, I'll be seeing you, Kurt" smiled Blaine.
Kurt went to say bye, but when he turned around Blaine was gone. Kurt took a long sip of his coffee and stood up. He walked towards the exit of the Lima Bean and thought to himself that this would be an awesome dream to explain to Tina tomorrow, she loved things like that. He threw his coffee in the trash and put his hands in his pockets. He pulled out his phone that he could have sworn wasn't there before. There was a text from an unfamiliar number on the screen.
I told you I knew where it was- Blaine
Kurt's jaw dropped and he quickly slid his phone back into his pocket. So maybe this wasn't a dream, but what did he have to lose? He took one more quick look around the Lima Bean and sighed. He turned and walked towards the door.
"Here goes nothing," he said as he swung the door open.
