"Hey Boo. You okay?" She asked with a bit of concern in her voice. He turned to Mercedes with sad, teary eyes and instantly she knew. "It'll be okay hon. There are other guys out there. You don't need him." She tried reassuring him, pulling him closer in the process. She resisted the urge to run her fingers through his hair to comfort him, knowing that he would never approve. He was upset, but he wasn't upset enough to let that slide. He wanted to just break down hysterically in Mercedes' arms, but he couldn't. One that would be really innapropriate. Two, Blaine could walk in at any given moment asking what was wrong. And Three, his eyes would get red and puffy, which was NOT a good look for him Kurt sniffled and shot his head out of Mercedes' arms when he heard footsteps getting closer to the entrance of the choir room. He wiped his tears as fast as humanly possible and immediately put on his show-face. Mercedes gave him a sympathetic smile and rested her hand on top of his while everyone began entering the choir room.
Rachel and Blaine entered with their fingers locked. Kurt squeezed Mercedes hand, causing her to wince in pain. He quickly released and apologized. Shortly after, Mr. Schuester entered with a huge grin plastered on his face.
"Guys, I think it's time for another duets competition! " He shouted waving his hands in the air triumphantly. Everyone got super excited knowing that the prize would be a free trip to Breadstix. Mr. Schuester pulled out a hat with everyone's name in it. Puck was paired with Brittany, Mercedes was paired with Finn, Quinn was paired with Tina, Santana was paired with Sam, Blaine was paired with Mike, and Kurt of course was paired with Rachel. He was cursing himself for going up last. Just his luck. Did he hate Rachel? No. Did he hate being partners with her? Abso-fucking-lutely.
"So what song are we gonna sing partner?" Rachel asked after the bell signaling that school was over rang. When Kurt continued walking in silence, she ran after him and grabbed his elbow. "Kurt's what is going on? We need to win this dinner! It's Breadstix!" She asked furrowing her eyebrows in confusion when Kurt quickly pulled away.
"Nothing is wrong Rachel. Just go back to Blaine. Wouldn't want him to worry." He snapped causing her to stumble backwards slightly. He rubbed his temple in frustration and stepped closer to her. "I'm sorry Rachel, I just don't think I can be partners with you." He said with his head down.
"It's because you're in love with Blaine, right?" She asked calmly. His head shot up and he stared at her with his eyes wide. He didn't know what to say. He was sure he was caught. She nodded slowly and smiled. 'What the fuck? Why is she smiling?' Kurt thought in his head. "You're going to Blaine's party on Friday right?" She asked hopefully. Kurt nodded his head still barely understanding why she was so calm about this.
"Perfect! I have to run, but text me with song ideas later okay? Bye Kurt!" She said kissing his cheek and then running to her car. Kurt stood there in shock. He walked to his car with his mind reeling. His phone started to ring. He looked at the caller I.D. He cleared his throat before answering.
"Hey Blaine." He answered. His voice was shaking slightly, but Blaine didn't seem to notice.
"Hey Kurt! I just wanted to know if you would want to come to my house earlier so you could help me set up for the party. I mean it's totally cool if you don't want to..." He asked trailing off.
"Uh... sure. W-what time should, uh, I be over?" Kurt asked wincing at the highness of his voice. He could practically hear Blaine's smile over the smile and couldn't help smiling in return.
"Come over at like 7:00 I guess. The party starts at 9:00 so I think we'll have enough time. Can't wait to see you Kurt. Bye!" He said quickly before hanging up. Kurt banged his head lightly on the steering wheel before starting his Navigator. This boy was going to be the death of him.
