For the whole session, they sang random tunes and felt happy. And Kurt was happy.
Well, at least happy enough to hold up a true smile, even he knew that he won't really be happy ever again. Things just weren't the same anymore. He took it as a fact.
Exhibit A's voice was actually not bad, even those sandals he wore was the absolute definition of hideous. Exhibit B was... an airhead, just as he thought, but not a bad person in general. And he's not commenting on Exhibit C.
Not when he's so well dressed, acting like a perfect gentleman, and sounded like sex on the stick. No Kurt Hummel did not just thought that, that was not Kurt Hummel, someone just took over control of his brain. I deny everything.
Glee club ended later than usual, but nobody complained, they were all just excited to have Kurt back in the group. It felt nice to know that the people you left behind still cared.
But he wasn't sorry for being distant.
They wouldn't understand, and I'm not putting my problems on anyone's shoulder. It's my mountain to climb then so be it.
He made plans with the girls, chatted away happily until they reached the exit and waved goodbyes. He sighed silently when everyone left in alternate ways; he's just feeling nostalgia.
Finn had already left with Rachel, so he could get home in time for dinner. Santana left with Brittany, she's helping her with homework. Artie was picked up by his dad, as usual. Puck and Sam are both working together in a bar. Mercedes drove home as usual. Quinn went to pick up her mom from work. Tina and Mike was the first to leave, probably still in school somewhere making out. Exhibit A (his name is Joe, must remember), said he was going to help out in church before going home for dinner. Exhibit B (Sugar, what kind of name is that, but well), had a chauffeur driving her home with a limo, not going to judge her for that.
He didn't remember seeing Exhibit C (still nameless even he seemed really close to everyone) leaving the building.
"Hi, I'm Blaine." Oh, there he is.
Kurt turned around, and Exhibit C, was standing behind him. Smiling, and at the same time, staring.
His heart skipped a beat, or probably more, he couldn't tell. He could feel the blood rushing up his cheeks, he's totally blushing and it would be magnified by his pale skin.
At that moment, Kurt Elizabeth Hummel, was more aware of himself than any moment of his life. He was aware of the state of his hair, Puck ruffled it before he left so it must be a mess right now; he was aware of what he was wearing, should have worn a real Marc Jacobs instead of a thrift store Dior; he was aware of his skin, should have exfoliate yesterday why didn't I exfoliate yesterday; he was aware of his cancer-filled lungs and his cannula and all his inadequacy seemed to be surfacing all at the same time.
Those thoughts circuited his brain in nanosecond, and then, Kurt Hummel composed himself to the normal state. He would not make an ass of himself in front of cute strangers.
"I'm Kurt, you probably already knew it by now." Response, checked. Coherency, checked. Should I say something? I probably should, he might be expecting me to continue to conversation. "Are you heading home now, Blaine?"
The other boy smiled shyly, but asked in confident, "no, in fact, I was just wondering, whether you want to hangout, with me."
Is he asking me out? Okay he's asking me out. Do not freak out, I repeat, do not freak out.
So he broke out a small grin, evened his breath, and replied, "sure, we could do that. But I need to call Finn about this first."
And Blaine's face literally crumbled like an avalanche. What----wait, no.
Before Kurt could further elaborate his relationship with Finn, Blaine started to ramble. "Oh my god I'm so sorry for assuming anything and I promise I won't judge you even Finn doesn't seem like gay and you're friends with Rachel and--"
"No! I'm not dating Finn behind Rachel's back!" He pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to rub that dreadful image out of his mind. No, just, no.
"Then----" He looked like a kicked puppy in an extremely confused situation, adorable. Kurt sighed, "Finn's my stepbrother. My dad married his mom last year."
"Oh." Blaine's face reddened significantly, while Kurt was mildly amused and slightly embarrassed, until a realization hit him.
Does this mean he wants to date me? No. Kurt Hummel stop getting ahead of yourself, don't set yourself up for anything; he won't understand you, it's not going to end well, and you're going to die any moment. Remember, you're dying.
He closed his eyes as he heard the monotonous ringing through his cellphone.
But still, he wanted this so badly, wanted to have at least a date. It doesn't have to be anything. He just didn't want to die without even having a taste of romance.
His call got picked up, it was Burt. Finn hasn't got home yet. "Dad? I'm not coming home from dinner. Yeah, I'm hanging out with one of the new members. I'll be back before curfew, don't wait up for me. Okay. Love you too, bye."
Kurt knew Blaine was staring at him, again. And somehow, he felt there was something other than his face that Blaine was looking at. There's something more, but he couldn't figure out what that is.
He turned around to face him, "Where do you want to go?"
"Breadstix?"
"Breadstix."
+
It turns out that Breadstix was booked for a wedding party, they ended up picnicking in the park, eating croissants from the local bakery. They sat carefully on a paper bag Kurt used to kept his extra outfit, Blaine shot an apologetic smile to Kurt when he realized Kurt was wearing Armani jeans.
"I'm sorry about the whole thing, should've picked another restaurant or something."
"It's fine, I like it here, I guess." He shrugged, taking a small bite of his croissant. That was partially true. He wasn't normally a nature person, but having their first date in a park was sort of romantic, he's not going to complain.
But he did have one question.
"Why did you ask me out?" Kurt was curious about this as well as the reason Blaine stared at him, but he didn't think the latter would be a good first date question. It sound interrogatory.
Blaine bit his lower lip, and looked at the sky as he answered, "I know what it felt like to have cancer, the isolation, the weariness. I understand."
"I had RCC two years ago, it took one of my kidney."
Kurt bit his lips. He never imagined he would ever encounter another cancer survivor (No, I haven't survived yet. It's still in me), not under these circumstances, not like this.
And so what? Now I'm his pity project? And hell probably the next thing he'll tell me is that he's not even gay. I knew this wouldn't end well.
"I don't----I don't need your pity, Blaine."
"I know you don't need my pity, you don't need it. You're strong and proud and I'm not pitying you." Blaine's gaze returned to his face, and was solemn and sincere, "I just really like you and want to get to know you."
The tension on his shoulders left him as he exhaled after a deep sigh, "I'm not exactly interesting here, Blaine."
That's when Blaine gave him a goofy smile, seemingly jubilant. It would be a blasphemy to say that this wasn't the most beautiful smile Kurt has seen in his lifetime. He knew he might be highly possibly, having a crush on him.
"You don't have to be interesting, again as I said, I just want to know you; the boring you, the exciting you, the normal you, the weird you; but I doubt your statement of uninteresting." He replied promptly, sitting slightly closer than he started. He could almost feel the heat radiating from Blaine, even they weren't actually touching; Kurt's heart was threatening to leap out of his throat.
Kurt started talking about his life in McKinley before the cancer, talking about his life with Carole and Finn, talking about his love for coffee, talking about his love for fashion and music and performing. "But well, you know, I can't really sing anymore."
It didn't come out as a resentment, it's just a statement that he had accepted since he knew what was ahead of him. He still loved singing, but he could never stand on a stage and perform, his voice never fully recovered after the chemos, his lungs wouldn't let him hit the higher notes anymore.
That's his life and he accepted it fully.
Then he glanced at Blaine, and caught him staring again. Kurt didn't ask why, but continued on, "That's why I chose Music Composition and Theatre, I can't sing but I can help people shine on stage."
And he was content about it; his dreams changed as his life changed.
Blaine leaned closer, almost touching the tip of his nose. "You're the most beautiful and aspiring and talented person I've met in my life. I'm definitely having a crush on you."
The fact that Blaine was so vocal about his feeling made Kurt turned on. He never knew he could be liked and wanted by another person, and how it could make him feel so giddy and warm. Hell I don't even know I could be turned on, not after all those shit I've gone through.
And Blaine was just this hot, gentle, perfect human being, that could have any boy of his choice, but he chose Kurt. He could've chose a perfectly healthy boy to like and be with, but he chose me: apparently sick and totally unattractive.
Kurt couldn't stop the tears forming in his eyes, they kept rolling down his cheeks despite his frantic wipe with his sleeves.
"Hey, what's wrong? Was it something I said?" Blaine was panicking at this point, but Kurt just shook his head.
"No, no! It has nothing to do with you! I'm fine." He gave a little smile as he held his head up and looked at the sky. It was dimming.
"I'm just, really touched. You know, no one has ever said anything like that to me, and---- I'm just really glad there's someone that could've liked me and I could like back."
"I'm glad there's someone that knows I'm a damaged good and liked me for being who I am."
He was pulled into and abrupt hug, where Blaine held him and kissed his hair. And for once in Kurt Hummel's life, he wanted nothing more than having this moment to last forever.

They stood on the pavement, unwilling to bid one another goodbye, even they would be seeing each other in two days' time. Kurt's curfew was getting near, so was Blaine's; they really had to leave.
"I really have to go now, I don't want my dad waiting up for me and we both have school tomorrow." Kurt said softly, but he didn't want to leave, not yet. He didn't want this day to end yet. It's too beautiful to be true and if all of these is just a dream of his, he wished he never had to wake up.
"I know. I'll see you at Glee?" Blaine agreed, his eyes unwilling to leave Kurt's face.
"Okay."
"Okay."
They both started to walk towards their car, but Kurt gave in to his urge of turning back after three seconds. So did Blaine.
"I had a confession to make." Kurt said, stepping back to where he started as Blaine did the same, "this is my first date ever and even I don't have anything to compare to, I have to say it's the best first date a person could've ask for."
And Blaine's eyes twinkled, "I also have a confession to make."
"I never did mention my last name."
"It's Anderson, Blaine Anderson."
Kurt chuckled, feeling playful, "you never did mention anything about yourself, either, while you knew everything about me at this point."
"Not everything! But well, I guess that'll just have to wait till next time then." Blaine smirked, "it's not like I've anything interesting to say about my life anyway. It's nothing compared to yours."
"That's my judgement to make, Mr. Anderson."
He gave Blaine a peck on the cheek and started to back away slowly, "I really need to go now."
"Okay."
"Okay."
"See you soon?" Kurt stood next to his car, asked delicately.
"Definitely."
And they left.

When Kurt finally finished his moisturizing routine, he remembered to empty his coat pocket for his phone to set an alarm. And he laughed heartily when he saw the Post-it stuck on the screen of his iPhone.
It's Blaine's number with a smiley face on it.
I could do this forever. Kurt thought to himself as he snuggled in his blanket.
