Author's Notes: This chapter is small, but important. Don't worry, there's more coming tomorrow.

December 24

Wes looks up from the street to the sixth floor window that he used to look out of.  There are no Christmas lights this year, which concerns him.  Frowning slightly, he heads into the building and up to his old apartment.  Lightly, he knocks on the door.  After a minute or so of no answer, he knocks again, louder this time, and presses his ear to the door.  There’s a rustling on the inside, but he can’t tell what it is.  Again, no answer.  Wes knocks a third time, much louder on this go.  His hand finds the door knob and he twists it, finding it open.  He peeks inside.

Blaine’s apartment looks like it usually does, except there aren’t any lights on.  The only light is the daylight from the window and a pile of Christmas lights near it.  The couch appears to have a big pile of blankets on top of it, until Wes looks closer.  Blaine is under the blankets, and breathing too fast to be asleep.

“What are you doing?”

The pile of blankets moves and Blaine’s exhausted face appears.

“What are you doing?”

“I heard you weren’t doing so hot, and there wasn’t anyone around to see if you were alright.  So, I came.”

“Who told you that?  I’m fine.”

“Blaine.  Let’s be honest.  I’m not a fan of being here behind Sebastian’s back.  I just wanted to make sure you weren’t dead.  Also, why are your Christmas lights in a pile on the floor and lit up?”

“I’m not dead.  I’m fine.  And they’re there because Kurt didn’t like them.”

“You probably should have turned them off.  Fire hazard.  Your hair looks like shit.  Have you eaten anything today?”

“Oh, thank you.  I appreciate your compliments.  No, I haven’t.  I’m not hungry.  Can you just go away?  I want to watch Friends without your commentary.”

“It wasn’t a compliment.  It was a signal for you to get off your ass and clean yourself up.  I don’t know what’s going on, but people have said you’re not answering your phone.  And, you don’t need to watch that crap.  It’s Christmas Eve.  Wake up.”

“No thanks.”

Blaine covers himself with the blankets again.

“Okay.  Fine.  I don’t care if you die from starvation and alcohol poisoning.  But other people do.”

Muffled words come from under the blanket.

“Like who?”

“Like Rachel.  And Jeff.  And Kurt.”

“Don’t talk about him, please.”

“Who?  Kurt?  You don’t want me to talk about Kurt?  Wake up and smell the roses, Blaine.  If doesn’t matter if you talk about him or don’t talk about him.  Or talk to him.  Or never see him again.  Maybe put a positive spin on it.  You don’t have to live with me anymore.”

“I ate on whatever day I flew back from Florida.”

“I have a granola bar in my pocket.  It was Sebastian’s last one.  He’s going to be pissed that I took it.  You’d better eat it.”

“I’m not hun-”

“Eat it.  Or I’ll beat the shit out of you.”

Blaine looks out of his hiding place and reaches over to take the granola bar from Wes.

“Where is your phone?”

“I don’t know.  It died.”

“Find it.  I’m pretty sure you’re going to need it.”

“What for?  No one’s goin-”

“Shut up.  How would you know if no one is going to call you if you don’t have the damn thing on?  I wonder how many missed calls you have from Jeff, wanting to know if he can come visit you for New Year’s Eve?”

“Jeff?”

“Yes.  Jeff.  He texted me, asking why you weren’t answering your phone.”

Sitting up, Blaine opens the granola bar and picks at it.

“I’ll find it then.”

“Are you wearing sweatpants?”

“Yes.”

“Blaine.”

“Wes.”

“You’re going to get up and get a shower.  Do your hair.  Get dressed.  Fold up your blankets and put the Friends dvds away.  You’re going to finish that granola bar, drink something other than SoCo, and go outside for some fresh air.  Then, you’re going to find your phone, charge it, and turn it on.  And you’re going to reply to the messages and voicemails that I’m sure you have.  And you’re going to have a good Christmas.  Alright?”

Blaine nods, looking at the granola bar in his hand like it’s something interesting.

“Okay.”

Wes stands and heads for the door.

“I have to go now.  But I expect a text at some point.”

Wes is almost to the door when Blaine looks up.

“Wes?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks.  For being the only person that cares about me.”

“I’m not the only person who cares about you.  I’m actually the only person that was available for the job.  Get up.  See you later.”

Blaine nods as Wes closes the door.
