Even watching Blaine’s face from afar, he could tell the boy was struggling for an answer.
Face it, Kurt thought, I’m not getting that part. And it would make Blaine happy.
So Kurt did the first thing he could think of. “Blaine!” He called in the direction of the stage.
“K-Kurt?” Blaine questioned, looking around, trying to find where the voice was coming from.
“Blaine, you have to go for it!” Kurt yelled again, tears forming in his eyes. Just because he wanted Blaine to go for it didn’t mean he wasn’t hurt that they wanted him instead.
“Kurt, please come down here!” Blaine yelled back.
Kurt made his way down to the stage area and slowly came out from behind a curtain, his right hand clutching at his left forearm. Blaine spotted him from the corner of his eye and turned slowly.
“Kurt,” Blaine tried to swallow the lump in his throat, but failed. “I can’t. You want this so badly, and what about NYADA?”
Kurt took a couple more steps towards Blaine until they were both in the middle of the stage, about three feet apart and completely unaware of the small audience they had. “Face it, Blaine. I’m not getting that part-”
“Don’t say that, your audition was-”
“Not what they were looking for. And as for NYADA, I can find different things. Join different clubs, stuff like that. I can work for the community theatre. But you. You have to do this. You fit the role so well, and I know you want it.”
Blaine was crying now. He did want this. But not as much as he wanted to keep Kurt happy.
“Kurt… I…” Blaine pulled Kurt into a very tight hug. It was the only thing he could think to do, seeing Kurt this upset, yet willing to give up something he wanted. Kurt clutched the fabric at the sides of Blaine’s shirt and tucked his head into the boy’s shoulder. He gulped at the air a couple times, trying to get the tears to stop. Once he got them under control he relaxed his hands, but didn’t remove them as he pulled away to look Blaine in the eye.
“Do it.” He whispered. “Go on.” He turned Blaine around to the front of the stage, where he could see the three directors in tears.
“Coach Beside, Artie, Ms Pillsbury. I’m honoured, but I’m sorry. I decline your offer.” Blaine smiled somewhat sadly. Kurt’s jaw was basically on the floor, and all three of the directors had questioning expressions. Blaine turned back to Kurt and grabbed both of his hands.
“Kurt, I wont take this from you. I can’t. I still have another year here, but you don’t. You have to make this one magic, like you wanted. Even if you don’t get the part. Which I doubt, because nobody else has auditioned yet.”
Kurt opened and closed his mouth, trying to find words. He settled for cupping Blaine’s neck and pulling him in for a passionate kiss. Blaine brought his hands up to Kurt’s sides as he responded to the kiss.
They only broke apart when they heard cheering from Artie and coach Beiste, though Ms Pillsbury just sat wide-eyed, not used to seeing such mature teenage relationships (despite the kissing on stage part). Both boys were smiling and blushing at the same time.
“Anderson, Hummel, you’ve got one helluva relationship, you know that?” Coach said with a smile. Blaine put an arm around Kurt’s waist and squeezed before leading him off of the stage.
