"I just don't know how this could have happened, Rachel!" I was furious and I needed to let out my anger to someone. That person wound up being Rachel since Mercedes decided that she was going to visit her grandmother that night, who didn't believe in the use of technology in her house.
"Kurt. I know that it seems hopeless right now. I get it..."
"No, Rachel, you don't. You don't have to be partners with the replacement to the guy that spent three years tormenting you. Do you understand how many nights I spent with my head buried in my pillow while I cried so that my dad wouldn't hear and ask me what was wrong because I was physically and mentally incapable of explaining it to him. Do you know how many times I had to tell him that the reason I would wake up screaming in the middle of the night was because I was dreaming that Ricky Martin had a heart attack and died because I just couldn't bear to tell him that every day for me was a living hell?"
"Oh my God, Kurt. I never knew that it was that bad for you. I mean I know what you told me and I know what I saw in the hallways, and how depressed you got, but I never knew that you didn't tell your dad."
"Well know you do. That moment that I first told him, it looked like I stabbed him in the heart. I don't ever want to see that look in his face again and I'm worried that I might have to because I don't think that I can manage to be civil around Blaine and God knows what he will do when we aren't at school and working on projects somewhere else. I'm fucking terrified Rachel."
"I want you to go to school tomorrow. I want you to see what happens. Maybe it won't be as bad as you think."
"Your optimism is sickening, but fine. I don't know how it will go and frankly, I don't know if I want to find out, but fine."
The next morning, thankfully, I wasn't greeted with the slushie facial that I had become accustomed to over the past few years.
"Boo!" I heard Mercedes call my name from down the hallway.
"How was grandma tech-no-no?"
"She was good. But when I got home, I noticed that you had called a few times. I just wanted to ask if you we're okay. What's up?"
"I got partnered with Blaine for year round English projects."
"Kurt. That's awful! Have you tried to switch?"
"Of course I've tried to switch!"
"Calm down. It was just a question."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to go off on you. I'm just a little...uptight."
"Which is understandable. We have Calc in like two minutes, see you there. And don't think too much about this, don't want you to get any wrinkles I that cute little forehead of yours. Let it sort itself out, run its course. Maybe you'll see something in Blaine that you didn't know was there before. Some people can surprise you."
As Mercedes wandered off down the hallway to our first class of the morning, I let what she said to me sink in. Maybe there was something to...
"Taste the rainbow!" I heard Azimio's voice about a millisecond before I felt the icy cold of thousands of ice chips coated in grape flavored dye hit my face.
I stood still, frozen, not opening my eyes, praying that Blaine wasn't with him.
...But he was. I knew that before I wiped away the sticky, cold liquid from my face.
"Come on Anderson, there are other glee losers waiting for a slushie to the face."
I let a tear slide down my face, but no one would ever know that because you could barely see my skin for the ice covering it.
I ran to the boys restroom, considering finding Mercedes or Rachel so that they could take me to the girls and help me get the stickiness out of my hair, but I didn't want their to see me like this. I didn't want anyone to see me like this.
But someone did. Blaine did. Azimio did. Everyone in the hallway, everyone who didn't try to stop the jocks, everyone who just stood back and watched, everyone who laughed at my embarrassment, they all saw. Everyone of them.
As I stormed through the bathroom door, I saw him. Blaine.
I stopped, a foot in the doorway, as his gaze met mine. For a second, I thought I saw regret, hurt, empathy. But that was short lived.
"The girls room is next door." He said, turning back towards the mirror, running his fingers through his hair, most likely applying more gel.
"Anderson! Who the fuck are you talking to? Are you epileptic?"
"Skitsifrenic."
"This isn't fucking English class Anderson. Don't correct me or else you'll wind up like that little butt fairy Hum..."
Azimio walked out of the stall.
"Anderson's right. Girls room is next door. I don't want you trying to peek at my junk."
"Right. Because that is exactly what I want to see Azimio. Your sweaty ballsack."
"Don't you get sassy with me Hummel."
"All I want to do is get the stupid dye that you gladly launched into my eyes, out. So if you don't mind, move out of the fucking way."
Azimio looked at Blaine who looked back at me.
"Go ahead and wash it out. There are plenty more slushies where that came from." And with those words, they both left the bathroom.
After a long time of scrubbing and rinsing, I noticedn that I had missed at least half of Calculus.
"Kurt Hummel. You are late to my class." Mrs. Rosenberg said. Apparently I wasn't as quiet as I thought.
"I will see you after school tomorrow, Mr. Hummel."
"But I..." I stopped, realizing that my arguing wouldn't do me any good.
The rest of the day went by in flash. Up until English that is. The simple thought of having to talk to Blaine, to try to be civil and not try to break his face made my stomach churn.
I rounded the corner and walked through the door, hoping that I was early. But he was already in his seat, right next to mine.
"Hey." He looked up at me as I placed my books on the desk.
"I see you got the slushie out of your hair."
"I see you haven't gotten any smarter."
"I didn't mean..."
"Alright class! I'm going to be coming around and handing out your first book. Romeo & Juliet. I am sure that you are all familiar with the story so this project should be a breeze. I want you to come up with your reasoning behind their love for each other. Was it because they knew their families wouldn't approve of their being together? Did they like to find danger? Was it just generally love? What was it to you? Then come up with your reason for them killing themselves? Was it reasonable? Would you do that for the person that you love? Would you do that for a person that you just met a week prior?"
"Well that doesn't seem all that difficult." Blaine whispered to me.
"Begin discussing how you plan to get this done. We will not be working on this in class except for discussing when you will meet within the five minutes before class begins."
"We each read it separately. Then we can meet at the Lima Bean. Less likely you'll beat me up in front of the scrutinous public eye. We can answer the questions then and be done."
"Oh! Guys! I nearly forgot! Annotate! I want you under lining key scenes in the book. Forming character lists. For every hundred pages, I want a page long report about what happened, why it has happened, what your think is going to happen, the key characters in those pages, some significant quotes from each of those characters. One paper per group per hundred pages but each of you must annotate and I will be checking to make sure that you each have exactly the same notes because you will discuss what you are going to write. However, if your notes do not match up, I will know that you have not been working in it together and you will get a zero. All of this means that you will have onto be in the same room reading the same page at the same time. Is that all clear?"
A chorus of 'yes sirs' filled the room. I was not one of them. I'm pretty sure that I stopped breathing momentarily. I was going to have to work with Blaine Anderson. It wasn't something that we could just pull out of our asses and get a passing grade. E were going to actually have to be in the same room for hours at a time trying to get this book read, annotated, and reported on. This day was just getting better and better.
"Continue your discussions!"
"So, now how do you want to do this."
"I think that you are misunderstood. I don't want to do this."
"Fine then. How should we do this?"
"I'm not sure."
"Kurt. There isn't a way that we can do this seperately so you can stop trying to figure one out."
"Blaine. I hate you."
"I'm quite aware of that actually. I'm not too keen about you myself."
"Believe me. I knew that from the moment that you slammed me into that locker."
"That wasn't me."
"Really Blaine? Because, you know, it sure sounded like you, and it definately looked like you, I mean, no one else in this school has that ridiculous amount of gel in their hair."
"I'll text you then. Maybe we would do better discussing this when we aren't face to face."
"You're right. Maybe then I won't have this horrible urge to punch you in the face."
Blaine laughed, only adding fuel to the fire.
"Don't you dare laugh at me!"
"I'm not laughing at you, Hummel, I jut doubt that you would actually punch me."
And that was it.
I had had thoroughly enough of Blaine Anderson.
So I punched him.
Of course, at the moment I wasn't really thinking and after I had done it, I didn't really know that I had, at least I didn't until my hand began throbbing violently and I heard people screaming and Blaine cluthching his face.
"Mr. Hummel! That is a detention! Two weeks. Everyday. After school."
"What the fuck Hummel!" Blaine released his eye and grabbed my shirt, pinning me up against the wall.
"Mr. Anderson! You too! Two weeks!"
"That's fucking ridiculous! He punched me!"
"I don't care Mr. Anderson! I don't accept at forms of physical violence in my classroom! Nor do I allow that kind of language! You will be staying an extra day for the vulgarity of not only your tone but of the words that you have chosen to use when speaking to an authority member."
Great. So now I have a hurt hand, a pissed teacher, and two weeks plus a day of after school detention with Blaine who is undeniably pissed at me and will probably beat the shit out of me the next chance that he gets. And we still have the project to do together.
