When Kurt emerged from the bathroom, having changed clothes and cleaned his face, first period was already over. Mercedes walked over, trailed by their friend Tina.
"You ok, Kurt?" Tina asked, concern etched into her face.
"I'm fine," Kurt told her as they began walking down the hall.
"It's a good thing you keep spare clothes in your locker," Mercedes told him.
"I just hope I can get the stains out of that sweater. I really like it," Kurt lamented.
Mercedes and Tina both offered to help and the group parted, Mercedes heading to algebra II and Tina and Kurt walking to English Literature. The first thing Kurt noticed as they entered the room was the new boy. The second thing he noticed was the fact that the boy was sitting in the middle of a sea of letterman jackets. Of course. He would be a jock. In fact, he was sitting next to Dave Karofsky, Kurt's main tormentor.
Kurt sighed and went to his seat, Tina sitting beside him. The jocks, led by Karofsky, erupted in a got of coughs. Each cough covered an insult, mainly the word "fag". Rolling his eyes at their originality, Kurt pulled out his notebook.
The teacher, Ms. Moss, pulled out her roll book and studied it for a moment.
"It seems we have a new student joining us," she said, looking up. "A Mr. Blaine Anderson. Mr. Anderson, where are you?"
Kurt watched the new boy, Blaine, raise his hand. He smiled shyly at the teacher, blushing slightly.
"Welcome to McKinley, Blaine. Right now we're reading Heart Of Darkness, let me just get you a copy," Ms. Moss trailed off, handing Blaine a book.
"Thank you," Blaine said politely, opening the book.
The rest of the class was spent taking notes. Kurt intentionally kept his eyes on his notebook, refusing to let himself look at Blaine. It didn't matter that Blaine hadn't laughed at him when be was drenched with slushy. It didn't matter that Blaine was polite, unlike the Neanderthals that surrounded him. It really didn't matter that Blaine had a mass of curly hair that Kurt would have loved to run his fingers throught. No, none of that mattered. The only thing that mattered was the fact that Blaine Anderson was probably straight and had no interest in Kurt.
