I, uh, almost forgot to post it because my copy of Any Way The Winds Blows arrived today and I spent the entire day reading.
Added note 2022: you guys should read that book!
Kurt did not expect to have a DM from Blaine. Normally, he’s the one who starts the conversation, even after two weeks of chatting mindlessly.
But now, Blaine decides to send the first message.
Blaine Anderson: I’m gonna say something big.
Eddie Andrews: ???
Blaine Anderson: Maybe you’ve already
figured it out yourself but, uhm,
I’m super gay.
Eddie Andrews: Oh, yeah. I got that.
Blaine Anderson: You did?
Eddie Andrews: You posted about the
local PFLAG meetings on your
Facebook timeline some times.
Blaine Anderson: Ha. Yeah.
That’s a big giveaway.
Blaine Anderson: You don’t mind?
Eddie Andrews: If I did, would I still
be talking to you daily?
Blaine Anderson: Fair.
I mean, it’s still such a big deal.
I wish it wasn’t.
Blaine Anderson: Anyway I’m happy you’re
not secretly a homophobe.
Blaine Anderson: I just wanted you to know.
Just to be sure, ya know?
Blaine Anderson: I wouldn’t be able to
live with myself if I had a
homophobic friend.
Kurt almost shuts his laptop in shock. Blaine just called him a friend. Or better yet, he called Eddie a friend. Blaine sees Eddie as a friend.
Kurt thinks back on their first DM session. All Blaine wanted was a true friend. What does this mean?
But then Kurt shakes his head. He shouldn’t think about this. People call each other friends all the time. After all, look at all of Eddie’s Facebook “friends” who added him without a second thought.
Eddie Andrews: No, I completely get it.
Eddie Andrews: Well, for what it’s worth,
I’m also very gay.
Blaine Anderson: Really????
Eddie Andrews: Yeah.
Blaine Anderson: Wow.
How did we not know this?
Eddie Andrews: Are you the only
gay kid at McKinley?
Kurt knows that Blaine’s at least aware of him. He wonders if Blaine will acknowledge him. After all, there’s a stark difference between the two of them and they both pretend the other doesn’t exist.
Blaine Anderson: No.
There’s another guy,
but I don’t know him well.
Eddie Andrews: Oh?
Eddie Andrews: At my old school,
the few gay kids knew each other.
Blaine Anderson: He and I are too different.
I mean, that’s what I think.
We hang around with different
kind of people too.
Blaine Anderson: I don’t think I like him.
This angers Kurt. He decides to do something risky.
Eddie Andrews: How so?
Blaine Anderson: It’s complicated.
Kurt sighs deeply. Is it really? What can possibly be so complicated?
Blaine Anderson: I don’t wanna talk about it.
Blaine Anderson: There were a lot of gay
kids at my old school.
I still talk to them, so I’m not
completely deprived from a community
if that’s what you’re worried about.
Eddie Andrews: That’s good to hear.
It can be lonely to be the only one.
I would know.
Before the other kid came out
at my school, I felt completely alone.
Eddie Andrews: It’s shit.
And of course I also had
quite some great straight friends.
But they don’t understand.
Eddie Andrews: Well, two of my friends
actually came out and started dating
each other, but they didn’t
come out publicly.
Kurt sends the message and he feels a knot in his stomach. He’s still alone, but Blaine can’t know that. He’s now telling Blaine that Eddie has a couple of gay kids at his school, but that’s obviously fictional. Sure, as written, he has Brittany and Santana, but they’ve never actually sat down to talk about it.
Honestly, it sounds nice to have a group of gay friends like Blaine.
If only Blaine wasn’t such a shithead. Besides, he basically confirms it himself: Blaine does not even want to hang out with Kurt.
Blaine Anderson: Good thing we also have
each other now, huh?
The more gays the merrier.
Kurt thinks back to his fight with Mercedes. Blaine seems so genuine over chat and since Blaine doesn’t know Kurt, he has no ulterior motive. He still believes that Blaine was pandering Mercedes, since they were in public at McKinley, but on Facebook with Eddie, Blaine has no reason to.
It confuses Kurt. He doesn’t like being wrong. He shakes his head. He has to stick to the plan. Keep talking to Blaine and hopefully he’ll find the dirt. That’s the goal!
