The day afterwards, Kurt looks around for Blaine. Blaine might not reach out to him, since the fear is just too strong, but Kurt can at least show Blaine that he’s there for him. After all, everything he wrote as Eddie is true. He was on the other side of that hatred.
It’s a weird thing to realise. It’s probably nothing compared to the weirdness and discomfort that Blaine’s feeling after his realisation, but Kurt prides himself for never being wrong. If someone tells him that he is, then, well, he’s not.
Sure, he did hate Blaine. He really did. Likewise, Blaine really hated Kurt. But they hated each other for the wrong reason: jealousy. Kurt was jealous of Blaine for getting everything he wants, despite being gay, and Blaine was jealous of Kurt having the courage to be himself. There is no one way to be gay, and sure, for Blaine, this is a façade, but even if he truly were like this, it wouldn’t make him any better than Kurt. Likewise, Kurt isn’t better than Blaine.
They were so wrong.
But if Kurt’s wrong about this, then what else is he wrong about in his life? The answer is obvious and almost literally staring him in the face. Kurt looks at his phone and his fingers hover over the Facebook app. Kurt was wrong to do any of this in the first place.
The scholarship that made Kurt hate Blaine even more is still hanging over their heads, but now he realises that Blaine wasn’t lying when he said that he needs it. He’s not living the lucrative private schoolboy life. Blaine is just as broke as Kurt. He didn’t leave Dalton because the school was beneath him. He left because he couldn’t afford it. He couldn’t afford it, because his parents are raging homophobes.
Kurt can’t relate to that. He’s suffered a lot because of homophobia, but his dad was always right at his side. His dad would burn down everything for him. His dad would wish he could afford to send Kurt to a safe place like Dalton. And sure, his mom is dead and maybe he’ll never know how she’d react, but Kurt’s convinced that his mom would be okay with it. Then there are Finn and Carole. Finn has made some missteps but after the wedding, he’s been nothing but supportive, and Carole is the best stepmother a boy could wish for.
Meanwhile, Blaine’s parents cut him and his brother off, all because they hate gay people. It’s a good thing that he has his grandmother, otherwise Blaine would be totally alone. Not anymore, though. Kurt’s looking for him to support him.
Although, should Kurt do that?
Blaine’s told all of this to Eddie, not Kurt. If Kurt comes up to Blaine, out of nowhere, to show him support, might that be weird? As far as Blaine knows, Kurt has no clue what happened to him. Blaine trusted Eddie, not Kurt.
There’s a tap on his shoulder. Rachel is standing next to him.
“Haven’t you heard? Blaine Anderson isn’t in school today. Apparently, he’s feeling sick,” she says.
“How do you know?”
Rachel rolls her eyes. “News travels fast and in this school, and everything he does is newsworthy. Speaking of news about Blaine, you’ve been messaging him for weeks and you haven’t given me anything good. What’s the gossip?”
Kurt’s stomach drops. He’s also thought about coming clean. This has gotten way out of hand. Kurt no longer wants to find something to expose Blaine. He now understands Blaine. Kurt thinks about his Eddie profile and a part of him just feels vile.
“Rachel, I’ve been thinking and maybe we should end this.”
Her face falls. “What has he done to you? How has he pampered you? Don’t tell me you’re also going to the other side.”
“Rachel, Mercedes was right. There is no us vs. them. We never should’ve done this. Can’t you see what we’ve done?”
“What did he say to you?” Rachel bites out.
Kurt shakes his head. “I can’t tell you that.”
And he can’t. He’s finally found Blaine’s big secret and he will never tell anyone.
Rachel looks livid. “Well, whatever it is, he’s probably lying!”
This is what Kurt means. Before yesterday, before he knew Blaine, he would easily accuse Blaine of manipulation, because he was blinded by his unnecessary hatred.
“No, Rachel. I’m out.”
Rachel looks hurt. She is looking at Kurt as if he’s betrayed her trust and their friendship. To her, that’s probably the case. If she’s already so confused by Kurt’s sudden change of heart, then Blaine will never understand his support. Kurt shakes his head and walks away from Rachel. He can’t deal with this now.
Instead he pulls out his phone and he sends Blaine a quick message.
Eddie Andrews: Hope you’re okay!
He looks at the screen name. Eddie Andrews. It’s all a lie. How can he ever come back from this?
