There are ten minutes left of this day, and I am surprised I finished it on time. I’m not sure if I will put out one tomorrow, so have a happy Sinterklaas and pakjesavond in advance!
Kurt watches Blaine leave so that he can talk to his girlfriend. Kurt stares at his drink.
Kurt didn’t really have an ulterior motive of sorts by helping Blaine out. Sure, Blaine is a nice attractive guy, but Kurt doesn’t crush on every nice attractive guy that gives him the time of day. So no, Kurt didn’t really look for anything here, but he wondered if Blaine had.
Well, Kurt was clearly wrong.
He has to admit that he wouldn’t have minded if Blaine did have romantic intents, since he is very nice and he’s fun to be around, but he also isn’t out to find new love, especially since he and Adam broke up. Either would’ve been fine.
At least he’s now certain about the nature of their short relationship. It’s funny. He’s only known Blaine for less than a day and he’s already grown quite fond of him. Maybe this is the loneliness he was anticipating. He knew that he was going to be leaving his friends and family behind for these six months. It’s fine. It’s part of the deal. And yes, he’s already hung out a little bit with his three roommates, but he hasn’t connected to them in the past week in the way he’s connected to Blaine in these few hours. Sunil is nice, though. He and Sunil are actually meeting up for dinner.
But Blaine is different. Right off the bat, they clicked. Maybe it is indeed the American background.
He jiggles his drink around and he waits for Blaine to come back.
“Sorry about that,” he hears. Blaine’s back, sooner than expected. “I told Quinn I’d call her back later.”
“Did you ditch your girlfriend for me?” Kurt jokes.
“Uh. Yes. I suppose I did,” Blaine deadpans, not picking up on the joke.
“Oh, don’t keep her waiting on my account,” Kurt says, “I can finish this drink and then I can go home.”
“No,” Blaine says and he reaches out to Kurt, as if he physically wants to stop him from leaving.
“Okay,” Kurt says, amused.
“Quinn will understand,” Blaine says.
“Quinn, huh?”
Kurt expected Blaine to be a bit flustered at the mention of his girlfriend’s name, but he just shrugs.
“Yeah,” he takes out his phone, “This is her.”
Blaine turns the phone around and Kurt sees a photo of a pretty blonde woman. She is wearing a pretty red dress and a pearl necklace. Then Kurt’s eyes fall on the figure standing next to her.
“Is that… you?”
“Hm?” Blaine turns his phone around, “Oh. Yeah. I zoomed away from me, hang on.”
Blaine taps on his screen before turning the phone around again. The Blaine on the photo looks more put together than the one sitting in front of Kurt. He’s more handsomely dressed with a dark blue waistcoat, slacks and gelled hair. The bowtie is a nice touch.
“I really just got out of bed and out of the house, I suppose,” Blaine says with a laugh.
“You still look great.”
Blaine smiles. “Thanks.”
“Well?”
“Hm?”
“How did you meet?”
“Oh!”
And finally, Blaine cracks a smile when thinking about Quinn.
“We met at Yale. We both went to university there and became friends. We did a lot of things together, even moved in together back in New Haven, so it only made sense that we would start dating as well, you know?”
Kurt hums in agreement.
“Friendship is a solid base for love.”
“Right,” Blaine says and the smile is gone, “Love.”
Kurt waits for Blaine to say more, but then Blaine starts talking about the city some more, as if the conversation about Quinn didn’t really happen. That’s fine. Maybe he is more private about that part of his life.
Both Kurt and Blaine have one more week of free time before classes and business talks start. Blaine explains briefly what is expected of him and Kurt is still impressed. Blaine must be around his age, and sure, Kurt definitely would love to lead one day, but he’s fine studying for now.
“Have you seen much of the country already?” Blaine asks Kurt.
Kurt shakes his head.
“No, I really took this first week to settle in,” he answers, “But I do have a bucket list of places to see, in the country and outside.”
“We’re in Europe,” Blaine says with a smile.
“Indeed,” Kurt raises his glass.
“So, what’s on your European bucket list?”
“London,” Kurt immediately says, “I have an ex who lives there and we’re still close. And maybe Dublin as well. Those are definitely farther away. A Flixbus trip from Ljubljana to Zagreb only costs €7 and of course, Trieste is right over the border to Italy.”
“Busy six months, hm?”
“Do you have a bucket list?” Kurt asks.
Blaine shrugs.
“I don’t- I haven’t really thought of it. But Quinn will be here in April, so maybe… yeah, maybe we can… go somewhere.”
Blaine sounds as if the idea is alien to him.
“Paris is lovely, so I’ve heard,” Kurt suggests. Well, he can’t really suggest it. He’s never been there himself, but it is the city of love.
“The city of love,” Blaine says, as if he can read Kurt’s thoughts.
“Indeed. Might be nice for a trip with her.”
God, why is Kurt so invested in Blaine’s relationship with Quinn? He just feels like there’s something’s off between them, which is insane. He’s never even actually seen them together.
They talk some more about places in the country they want to see, like Lake Bled, or the city Koper, when Kurt’s phone buzzes in his pocket.
“Sorry,” Kurt quickly checks his message. It’s Sunil. He’s at Prešeren Square.
“Hm?”
“My roommate has arrived. He’s waiting for me at Prešeren. I told you we were going to have dinner together, right?”
“Uhm… no.”
“Oh. Well. We’re going to try out the Boni. There’s this Asian fusion restaurant that our other roommate swears on.”
“Ah.”
Kurt sends a message back, saying he’ll be there soon, but he quickly glances back to Blaine before texting: Is there room for one more?
Sure! Sunil writes back.
“You want to come along?” Kurt asks Blaine.
Blaine’s eyes widen and an easy smile forms on his face.
“Yes, yes, I’d like that.”
The Asian fusion restaurant is called DA BU DA, Asian Fusion & Bar. It had some great Boni and it's also where I learnt how to say dober tek, which is bon appetit in Slovene. Or eet smakelijk, as they say in the Netherlands. Wack that there is no English variant.
